Wu Hua was an infant boy found amid an encirclement of strange entities. The abbots later describe him as possessing “a body of a demon and heart of a Buddha,” believing he could free Buddhists from the constraints of their old scriptures and establish a new future for them. 189

He became Kong Chan's final and publicly acknowledged closed-door disciple at Vajra Temple. The temple's teachings emphasize entering the mortal world, experiencing and severing worldly entanglements, then transcending them; its disciples are also expected to confront heretics and evil as wrathful vajras. 85
