Background / History
Ye Zi was born and raised in Wind Chime Prefecture as a member of the Ye Family, a clan that trains women in music to serve and please high officials and nobles. Her upbringing treated her as a commodity rather than an independent person; she later revealed that Ye Yu had bullied her within the family hierarchy. 133 141
She inherited the Ye Family's Strange Sound Master branch and was sent to Xu Bai, but escaped before fulfilling the family's arrangement. When she met Xu Bai in Pottery Earth Prefecture, she revealed her identity and offered information on the Ou Family in exchange for the chance to survive. 133
After proving her value in interrogation and combat support, Ye Zi chose to remain with Xu Bai as his maid. Her loyalty gradually became personal devotion, and she later returned with him to the Ye Family residence in Wind Chime Prefecture despite having previously fled it. 135 141
Appearance
Ye Zi is a striking woman whose face is frequently hidden beneath a veil. Even veiled, her soft and alluring bearing draws attention in public. 134 141
- Long black hair, which hangs over her forehead when wet. 135
- Large, expressive eyes described as soft or star-like. 134
- Fair hands and slender fingers used to form and pluck musical threads. 134
- Often wears a veil, though it does not conceal her presence or charm. 134 152
- Moves with “lotus-light steps,” reflecting her refined musical upbringing. 135 152
Personality
Ye Zi presents herself as gentle, obedient, and attentive, especially around Xu Bai. Her Ye Family training made her highly skilled at caring for others, but she is not merely submissive: she is observant, capable of reading people, and understands when to remain silent while a plan is unfolding. 134 135
Beneath her soft exterior, Ye Zi is resolute. She fled the Ye Family rather than continue living as a tool, risked herself to support Xu Bai against superior enemies, and chose to seek stronger instruction rather than become someone he had to protect. 141 159 174
Her greatest insecurity is becoming useless to Xu Bai. Even after he learned an ability similar to hers, she immediately worried that she had lost her purpose; Xu Bai reassured her that their combined musical effects could be stronger. 144
Abilities & Skills
Strange Sound Master Techniques
Ye Zi is a musician of the Strange Sound Master branch. Through song and musical rhythm, she can influence the minds, vitality, and combat condition of others. 133
- Draws vitality from listeners who become immersed in her singing; the drain leaves them weak for several days but does not fundamentally harm them. 133
- Can create tangible-looking threads between her fingers and pluck them like a zither. 134
- Her music can slow enemies by making the surrounding air feel stagnant. 135
- Can disrupt weaker opponents directly; her playing forced several Yamen Runners to retreat and cough blood. 136
- Musical support smooths and accelerates Xu Bai's circulation of True Yuan Power, substantially strengthening his combat output. 135
- Her support can be layered with Xu Bai's own musical effects after he comprehends the Yin Fiber Tune. 144
Dream Interrogation
Ye Zi can use strange music to guide an unconscious target into answering questions truthfully while asleep. 134
- Requires the target to be unconscious and unaware for the highest chance of success. 134
- She can determine whether a target is genuinely unconscious rather than pretending. 134
- The technique enabled Xu Bai to extract the names of more than a dozen families conspiring against him from the Ou Family's old butler, A Fu. 135
- Deeply buried secrets can still provoke resistance; A Fu's soul seed activated before he could identify his master, violently breaking Ye Zi's musical threads. 135
- Ye Zi initially stated that the technique might fail against a target stronger than her. 134
Musical Knowledge
Ye Zi possesses broad knowledge of the martial world, particularly musical professions, soul-related techniques, and higher realms. 142 160 161
- Explained the distinction between Demon Warlocks and Demon Masters to Xu Bai. 142
- Identified soul-based weaknesses in Xu Bai's defenses and directed him toward the Ye Family's soul-related books. 135
- Explained the Transcendent Realm's nine grades and the continued importance of Heavenly Change in higher realms. 161
- Her explanation of musical support helped Xu Bai understand how to use his own newly acquired Yin Fiber Tune. 144
Heavenly Sound Master's Disciple
In the Capital City, Ye Zi became the disciple of the Heavenly Sound Master, a powerful musician once defeated by Eunuch Wei and compelled to guard the Imperial Treasury. 174
- Voluntarily accepted a year of instruction to avoid becoming a burden to Xu Bai. 174
- Was considered “excellent material” by the Heavenly Sound Master. 174
- Advanced rapidly under her mentor and was already approaching the Second Rank during her training. 177
- Later became a Transcendent Realm expert. 217

- Musical threads — manifestations formed from her fingers and plucked to produce her Strange Sound Master techniques. 134 135
Relationships
- Xu Bai — Her master, companion, and eventual lover. Ye Zi initially sought to prove herself useful enough to survive at his side, then developed steadfast devotion to him. She supports his battles, manages practical matters for him, and repeatedly seeks greater power so she can stand beside him rather than burden him. 135 141 159 174
