Background / History

Kubana first became renowned in the primitive tribal era as a sage who popularized fire and distributed wooden plant-classification boards separating plants into non-toxic edible, non-toxic inedible, and toxic categories. His reputation protected his small tribe so thoroughly that warring tribes would pause fighting to let his people pass safely. 21

Unable to share his questions with the people around him, Kubana sought an intellectual equal rather than simple worship. When Aethelred descended before him, he asked about the universe, the nature of the world, and humanity's purpose. In exchange for spreading her faith, he accepted basic scientific knowledge and became her chosen apostle. 22

When Hu'erlun absorbed Kubana's tribe into the Eagle Alliance, Kubana concealed his own connection to Aethelred and served publicly as the alliance's Great Shaman. He flattered Hu'erlun and the God of War while quietly using his knowledge and political advice to shape the Eagle Empire. 25 26

As Hu'erlun's strategist and later Imperial Tutor, Kubana proposed replacing the loose Eagle Alliance with a centralized empire. His followers, installed as “honorary leaders,” spread stoves, ironworking, plant knowledge, and poison-quenching techniques across the tribes, expanding Kubana's prestige even beyond the Eagle Empire. 26 27

Kubana eventually poisoned Hu'erlun through Spirit Nourishing Soup, personally killed him after his betrayal was exposed, and succeeded him as the Eagle Empire's second Emperor. Under his covert support, the Truth Church—devoted to Aethelred and Kubana's knowledge—became the strongest of the Three Divine Sects. 34 35

His pursuit of truth strained his marriage to Empress Fina. After Fina poisoned herself, Kubana drank from her cup to die beside her; Aethelred then showed him the truth he had sought and revealed that humanity's meaning was the pursuit of happiness. 37

Kubana later re-entered public life under the name Bana, appearing in his prime and concealing his identity from a world whose statues depicted the original Kubana as an elderly, bearded man. 341 Once recognized as Saint Kubana, he exposed infiltrators within the Kun clan, consolidated the Eagle Empire's power, and unified the Canghuang Continent with little direct warfare. 392 409 412 468

After ascending as a Second Generation Deity, Kubana devoted himself to creating and refining the Reincarnation System. His central goal was to retrieve Fina's divine consciousness from the past, restore her as a soul within the system, and grant her a new life. 621 He later traveled through Time to find Fina's soul, learned that his actions formed a closed karmic loop, and brought her into the Reincarnation System. 623 624

In the Infinite Sacred Domain, Kubana's sealed cognition awakened, revealing that he was an alternative avatar of another being. Bound to a destiny of burying the glory he had helped create, he activated a long-prepared scheme that brought chaos to the Calamity Kin Grand Alliance. Yeta killed him after he refused to disclose his true origin. 754 755

Appearance

Kubana's recorded appearance varies between his original historical image and his later identity as Bana.

  • Statues of the historical Sage depict him as an elderly, round-faced man with a full beard. 341
  • As Bana, he appears youthful and in his prime, making his identity difficult for contemporaries to recognize. 341
  • Dragons with ancestral memories identify Bana as resembling Kubana in his youth. 394
  • Upon becoming a Second Generation Deity, he takes on a massive semi-corporeal form in the starry sky, surrounded by a sacred radiance. 566

Personality

Kubana is defined by an overwhelming need to understand reality. Even when first meeting Aethelred, he sought answers about the universe and human existence rather than strength, wealth, or personal safety. 22 He remains committed to this pursuit even when Aethelred offers to save Fina and let him continue ruling; he instead insists that she fulfill her promise to reveal the truth. 37

He is also calculating, patient, and highly skilled at exploiting human desires. He gained Hu'erlun's confidence through humility and praise, hid his own religious allegiance, then used the empire Hu'erlun founded as the foundation for his own rule. 25 26 34 His later political planning similarly relies on treaties, economic dependence, technology, and public legitimacy rather than force alone. 468

Despite his ruthlessness, Kubana understands emotional complexity and is capable of compassion. While purging spies from the Kun clan, he distinguishes between those he considers remorseful and those he judges irredeemable, sparing some to preserve the family from immediate collapse. 410 411 His enduring guilt over Fina ultimately drives him to risk himself in the Time Passage to bring her back. 623 624

Abilities & Skills

Exceptional Intellect and Strategic Planning

Kubana's thinking is described as operating at an “eighth level,” far beyond ordinary human capability. 304

  • Established the Eagle Empire's centralized political model from the former Eagle Alliance. 26
  • Manipulated Hu'erlun's vanity and faith to secure influence without openly seeking authority. 26
  • Uses public treaties, economic exchange, technological dependence, and social pressure as tools of long-term control. 468
  • Could potentially cripple a contemporary nation without military action through schemes and manipulation. 248
  • Quickly adapted to high-dimensional civilization and outperformed many veteran core members of advanced civilizations. 754

Scientific and Civilizational Knowledge

Aethelred gave Kubana foundational knowledge that he could review directly within his mind. 22

  • Popularized fire and a practical classification of edible and toxic plants. 21
  • Spread ironworking, crude stoves, poison quenching, and other technologies through his honorary leaders. 27
  • Created paper and developed medicinal Spirit Nourishing Soup. 35
  • Introduced scientific technologies to improve living conditions after becoming Saint. 412
  • Could not independently teach or disseminate every advanced technology, eventually relying on technical personnel from the Dawn Empire. 468 564

Political Authority and Religious Influence

Kubana repeatedly turns reverence for his wisdom into institutional power.

  • Served as Great Shaman, strategist, Imperial Tutor, and eventually Emperor of the Eagle Empire. 25 34
  • Supported the Truth Church until it became the largest of the Three Divine Sects. 35
  • Reclaimed authority as Saint Kubana, receiving public recognition from churches, mythical creatures, and kingdoms. 405 468

Reincarnation, Time, and Karma

As a Deity, Kubana develops the Reincarnation System to preserve and restore souls.

  • Identified Time and Karma as necessary principles missing from the system. 621
  • Learned to coexist with Karma and avoid destabilizing karmic entanglements. 623 624
  • Traversed the Time Passage in ethereal form despite severe physical and spiritual destabilization. 623
  • Retrieved Fina's soul from the past and brought her into the Reincarnation System. 623 624
  • Required Tang Chuan's secret intervention to eliminate the Karma that would otherwise have endangered his return. 624

Equipment / Items

  • Spirit Nourishing Soup — A medicinal soup prepared using Kubana's plant knowledge; it restores energy and was also used to poison Hu'erlun. 26 34
  • Blue cosmic-map fragment — A glowing object granted by Aethelred in a dream; Kubana's fragment combines with Bonneville's and Azk's to form a complete Rubik's Cube containing a future cosmic map. 532
  • Starship — A vessel under Kubana's control after his return as Saint; he entrusted its protection to the Dragon Elder. 408
