"Lady Soraka, although we have no allies on land we can work with, surely those Scourge skeletons haven't blockaded the sea as well? We could set sail and ask the peoples of Kalimdor for help."

After hearing Alleria's suggestion, both Soraka and Kael'thas, seated on the throne, furrowed their brows.

"Alleria, are you suggesting that we ask those loathsome commoners for help?!"

The commoners Soraka referred to weren't the people of Quel'Thalas. She meant the Night Elves who lived in Kalimdor.

Ten thousand years before the War of the Ancients, or perhaps even further back, Azeroth was still a single landmass. There was no such thing as elves then. The Trolls ruled the continent.

Later, a group of Trolls came to the Well of Eternity. Its power gradually transformed them into Night Elves. As a result, Night Elves of that age valued magic even more than today's High Elves did.

With the Well of Eternity at their disposal, the Night Elves used magic to overthrow their Troll cousins and become the rulers of Azeroth. They named the land beneath their feet Kalimdor, meaning "Land of Eternal Starlight." The benefits they gained only made them more reliant on the Well of Eternity, and they devoted even more resources to drawing upon its power.

Society naturally gave rise to social classes. Much like in Quel'Thalas, the Night Elves who could use magic were nobles, while commoners had to find other ways to gain power. Some became priestesses of the Moon Goddess, like Tyrande Whisperwind, or druids, like Malfurion Stormrage, Illidan's elder brother. Illidan had been summoned by Queen Azshara because, despite being a commoner, he had shown considerable talent for magic. It was also around that time that Illidan got involved with—no, met—Vashj, beginning their complicated relationship.
