Background / History

Ner'zhul's disciple

Gul'dan first appears as the hooded, staff-bearing prized disciple of Ner'zhul, the Shadowmoon Clan's Great Shaman. Even at the gathering of Draenor's great clans, he is regarded as a future betrayer who will bring ruin to the orcs. 13

He develops a strength-enhancing potion and has Ner'zhul offer it as a tournament prize. The potion is later exposed as Demon Blood rather than a legitimate enhancement, and Gul'dan reacts with hostility when Leiluo exposes its flaws. 14 26 52

Operating through agents such as Black Robe, he investigates the Pebble Clan, seeks the Behemoth it possesses, dispatches warlocks to secure his plans, and attempts to recruit Garona as an assassin. 16

Sacrifices and demonic allegiance

Gul'dan infiltrates and destabilizes the Fireblade Clan through his followers, including Nilru. At the clan's sacred grounds, he imprisons Fireblade orcs and performs a Fel ritual that consumes their lives; Durotan accuses him of killing ten thousand orc kin. 29 45 54

He openly rejects the Ancestral Spirits in favor of a “god” who promised him supreme power. That patron, Kil'jaeden, destroys Gul'dan after declaring that his failures have made him useless. 54 55

Return, possession, and control of the Horde

Gul'dan later resurfaces through possession and deception, communicating with Medivh and acting through Ner'zhul's identity. He seeks to resume the plans interrupted by Leiluo and attempts to murder him with a Shadow Bolt at Karazhan. 76 85

While disguised as Ner'zhul, he controls Shadowmoon warlocks through their Fel Energy, establishes Shadow Council cells in other clans, and directs covert operations across the Horde. 74 111

He eventually confesses to Orgrim that he drugged Blackhand, acquired his blood, and maintained a monthly spell over roughly a year to control the Great Chieftain. The process would fail if a casting were interrupted. 132

Orgrim's prisoner and continuing conspirator

After Gul'dan's attempt to seize Khadgar's soul backfires, Orgrim confronts him and forces him to reveal his identity. Rather than execute him, Orgrim keeps him severely injured and uses his knowledge of warlock magic, portals, and Death Knight creation. 131 132

Gul'dan outwardly serves Orgrim as “Ner'zhul,” but secretly maintains agents, contacts Ogre forces, and searches for a way to restore his influence. He later locates the artifacts needed to open the Dark Portal and continues plotting against Orgrim. 135 166 179 201

Troll manipulation and the Quel'Thalas campaign

Gul'dan manipulates Zul'jin by exploiting the troll leader's distrust of Orgrim. He offers strategic advice, seeks three artifacts for himself, and ultimately extorts one hundred thousand trolls by inflicting a spiritual injury on Zul'jin's hand. 240 277 299 301

During the attack on Quel'Thalas, he uses trolls as expendable scouts and incites them to massacre an Elven border village. He absorbs the souls of the slain through the Twisting Nether to strengthen himself. 307 319

His direct communion with the Twisting Nether allows him to summon demons without relying on the Burning Legion, but the demons he produces are sometimes weak and are easily defeated by Elven rangers. 311 321

Tomb of Sargeras and return

Seeking power sufficient to overcome Orgrim, Gul'dan leads warlocks to the Tomb of Sargeras. Nilru and Talon Blood Demon betray him after locating the entrance, but Gul'dan overwhelms them by asserting control over the Fel power he granted them. 417 418

Opening the tomb releases an azure light that erodes his body and Fel Energy. A magic crystal preserves only his skull, while his book and necklace fall beside it. 418

The Skull of Gul'dan is later used with Medivh's Book and the Eye of Dalaran to reopen the Dark Portal. 481

After ten years trapped in the skull, Gul'dan returns as a Blood Demon, recovers his staff from Rek'tar, and restores his preferred form. 660

Gul'dan is most often depicted as a hunched, hooded green-skinned orc carrying a staff. His presentation changes with his condition: he dons a skull-decorated cloak and staff after recovering Fel power, becomes a skull after the Tomb of Sargeras incident, and later returns in his familiar form. 13 296 418 660

He is a practiced deceiver. He convincingly performs grief before Ner'zhul, impersonates Ner'zhul after replacing him, and presents self-serving conspiracies as concern for others' welfare. 26 111 241

His confidence is paired with intense suspicion. He controls subordinates by making their power dependent on him, doubts Nilru even when Nilru appears loyal, and reacts violently to betrayal or perceived disrespect. 74 296 301

Despite his arrogance, Gul'dan prioritizes survival. He flees Zul'jin's poisoned trap rather than aid Varimathras, and later abandons his own undead forces when surrounded at Mount Hyjal. 698 772
