Karazhan had once been the name of Medivh's Mage Tower. But after it was destroyed during the First Orc War, Karazhan became the name of a place.

Karazhan lay in Gale Ridge. Gale Ridge had once been a place of beautiful scenery, but after Medivh "died," it seemed to fall under a curse: the land became barren and not a blade of grass grew. Then, during the twelve years of anarchy in the Kingdom of Stormwind, it gradually developed into a lawless land. Many humans who had gotten into trouble fled there and began new lives. As time passed, other races appeared as well. Trolls, dwarves, gnomes, and even Orcs gathered there. In Karazhan, no one cared what you looked like; they cared only about your strength and how much money you had. Of course, if you were an elf, congratulations—you would draw every human's attention, because elves were worth a lot.

Humans, other intelligent races, and even animals all shared one instinct: in a harsh environment, they naturally gathered with their own kind. So humans, trolls, dwarves, gnomes, and Orcs all had their own organizations in Karazhan. Some were loose-knit, while others were exceptionally well organized. The Sharp Stone Society, for example, was made up entirely of women and was an extremely well-organized group. It was also one of the most powerful forces in Karazhan. One measure of an organization's power was its intelligence network. The moment Varian and Leiluo entered Karazhan with their people, the Sharp Stone Society already knew.

At first, "Sharp Stone" was just one person's nickname. Whenever she struck, she carved a sharp stone into her opponent's face, and in time, people began calling her Sharp Stone. The Sharp Stone Society took its name from her.
