The Alliance army had arrived late because of the ships from Kul Tiras. They still relied on sails and manpower. When the wind was favorable, they could be just as fast as the Horde's steamships, perhaps even faster. But as they sailed north, the wind died down, and their speed slowed considerably. They were nowhere near as fast as the Horde's steamships.
