Background / History

Orochimaru lived through two Ninja Wars and became one of the legendary Sannin before defecting from Konoha. His reputation later serves as a warning among Konoha’s leaders: Danzō and the village advisers fear that Gu Qi’s research talent could produce “another Orochimaru” 46 70 72 75.

He established Otogakure after bribing the Land of Rice’s daimyo. The country became his main base, with the village concealed underground. According to Fuma Temoku, many of its ninja came from local ninja families whom Orochimaru had misled into joining him 111 112.

Orochimaru also maintained secret dealings with Danzō. Documents recovered from Root record Danzō supplying him with information about the Third Hokage’s guard squad and providing Konoha’s defense map to Otogakure and Sunagakure 154.

Appearance

  • Snake-like eyes: Explicitly described during his confrontation with Gu Qi at the Valley of the End 137.
  • Changed physique: Gu Qi observes that his body looks much smaller than during their earlier encounters, despite his familiar attire 137.
  • Disguises: Appears as Otogakure’s jōnin leader during the Chūnin Exam preliminaries and later as the Kazekage 74 87.

Personality

Orochimaru is curious about unusual techniques and readily acknowledges talent. During their first fight, he sincerely credits Gu Qi’s own efforts rather than attributing his strength to Kakashi. His interest in Gu Qi’s research leads him to offer recruitment repeatedly, even while the two remain opponents 72 75.

His pursuit of power is openly exploitative. He calls his followers pawns, describes Sasuke as an especially valuable one, and intends to acquire Sasuke’s body for the Sharingan and Uchiha power. He believes Sasuke’s desire for revenge will eventually outweigh Kakashi’s efforts to restrain him 75 119 138.

Admiration does not prevent him from eliminating a threat. After Gu Qi disrupts the Konoha invasion, Orochimaru decides that the boy’s future potential makes him dangerous. Later, he threatens Gu Qi’s companions when he recognizes that Flying Thunder God makes Gu Qi difficult to capture 89 177.

He is nevertheless capable of pragmatic cooperation. He cancels an operation against Konoha after receiving Gu Qi’s invitation, accepts compensation for their earlier conflict, and provides substantial experimental records during a subsequent trade. He also rebukes Kabuto for allowing hostility toward Gu Qi to override sound judgment 179 180 181.

Abilities & Skills

Biological Research and Human Modification

Orochimaru conducts live experiments involving human modification, bloodline transplantation, and Hashirama’s cells 176 180 181.

  • His work becomes a model for Gu Qi’s attempt to cultivate a replacement stomach from his own cells and Samehada’s tissue 98.
  • His transplantation records identify rejection as a major cause of experimental failure 181.
  • Gu Qi estimates that Orochimaru and Kabuto possess at least intermediate-plus biological knowledge and prepares advanced material for their exchange 180.
  • Unlike Gu Qi’s initially self-limited experiments, Orochimaru is willing to experiment on other people without comparable ethical restrictions 72 104 180.

Reincarnation and Body Acquisition

Orochimaru’s pursuit of immortality includes reincarnation into another body. Sasuke is a prospective vessel, not merely a student 104 119 130 138.

  • He seeks Sasuke’s Sharingan and the power of the Uchiha clan 75.
  • Gu Qi states that Orochimaru cannot reincarnate again for three years, giving Naruto and Sakura time to recover Sasuke 130.

Snake Techniques

Orochimaru uses snakes for attacks, defense, ambushes, and battlefield interference 72 137 138.

Technique / Application Demonstrated Use
Myriad Snake Formation Defends against Gu Qi’s hastily fired Railgun, despite normally being an offensive technique 72.
Destroying Chaotic Snakes Attacks Gu Qi during their first encounter 72.
Shadow Snake Hand Sends a swarm of pythons toward Gu Qi 137.
Shadow Many Snake Hands Attacks through Gu Qi’s Flame Giant; sheer numbers allow some snakes to approach despite being burned 138.
Underground snake ambush Sends snakes upward from beneath Gu Qi 72.
Retrieval of marked kunai Uses a small snake to recover Gu Qi’s Flying Thunder God kunai and undermine his planned escape 137.
Controlled python Attacks Gu Qi during the pursuit through his research facility 177.

Elemental Ninjutsu

  • Wind Release — Great Breakthrough: Launches a powerful wind attack that Gu Qi withstands with his shield 72.
  • Earth Release — Earth Flow Wall: Blocks Fire Dragon Flame Bullets; Gu Qi then destroys the wall with an explosive Railgun round 176.
  • Water Release — Water Wall: Produces a water barrier against Gu Qi’s Flame Release fireball 177.

Clones, Substitution, and Skin Shedding

Orochimaru repeatedly uses deception and replacement techniques to avoid decisive hits 72 138 176 177.

  • A shadow clone fights Gu Qi during their first encounter, placing him under severe pressure while holding back 72 73.
  • He uses substitution and underground movement to reposition during combat 72 176.
  • An apparent hit from Earth Rising Spears leaves only his skin behind 176.
  • A clone takes Gu Qi’s paired Great Fiery Rasengans while Orochimaru moves elsewhere 177.
  • He survives Gu Qi’s eighteen-hit Rasengan barrage and emerges after Gu Qi withdraws 138.

Summoning: Manda

Orochimaru summons Manda against Gu Qi’s Flame Giant 137 138.

  • Fights from atop Manda’s head while supporting the summon with snake attacks 138.
  • Manda demands one thousand living sacrifices, including those Orochimaru already owes him 138.
  • Gu Qi dispels Manda with a house-sized flaming Rasengan delivered through Flying Thunder God 138.

Facilities & Research Materials

  • Underground Otogakure: His main village in the Land of Rice, concealed below ground 111 112.
  • Secret Land of Rice hideout: A separate base whose location Karin reveals to Gu Qi 170 175.
  • Southern island stronghold: An outpost infiltrated by Gu Qi while searching for him 169 170.
  • Hashirama cell samples: Stored at his research facility and taken by Gu Qi during an infiltration 176 177.
  • Experimental records: Detailed material on human modification and kekkei genkai transplantation, later shared with Gu Qi 181.

Relationships

  • Gu Qi — A rival researcher whom Orochimaru alternately recruits, threatens, fights, and trades with. Gu Qi admires his scientific ability but initially rejects his live experiments and defection from Konoha 72 75 177 180 181.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Subordinate and research associate. Orochimaru protects him because he remains useful, rescues him when unconscious, and insists that he obey decisions concerning Gu Qi 78 176 180.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Student, prized pawn, and intended future vessel. Orochimaru anticipates his defection and refuses to release him after Gu Qi wins their agreed duel 75 119 136 137 138.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Opponent who confronts him to protect Sasuke. Orochimaru invokes Kakashi’s own Sharingan when explaining his interest in Uchiha power 75.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Opponent during the Konoha invasion. Hiruzen uses the Reaper Death Seal against him and dies from its backlash 89.
  • Jiraiya — Former comrade who tried to persuade him to return to Konoha; Gu Qi invokes that history while arguing for Sasuke’s rescue 138.
  • Danzō Shimura — Covert collaborator whose dealings with Orochimaru are recorded in Root’s archives 154 176.
  • Karin — Follower who knows the location of his hidden base. Gu Qi coerces her into becoming an informant 170.
  • Manda — Combat summon whose cooperation comes with demands for living sacrifices 138.
