Background

Two years before Huangfu Ji's Martial Soul Awakening, Huangfu Ji's uncle rebelled against Qingyang Duchy. Yuan Hao was stationed only dozens of miles away when Grand Duke Huangfu Yunhe was surrounded, but did not send reinforcements until after Huangfu Yunhe died in battle. He subsequently put down the rebellion and seized Qingyang's military and administrative authority. Opponents were executed, removed from office, or driven away. 1

As Huangfu Ji was only four years old at the time, Yuan Hao controlled him as a nominal ruler while presenting himself as regent. He intended to eventually usurp Qingyang's throne rather than return authority when Huangfu Ji came of age. 2 20

Yuan Hao is calculating and politically patient. He maintains the public fiction that he governs for the underage Grand Duke's protection while cultivating support among imperial ministers, nobles, the Four Great Kingdoms, and Spirit Hall. 5 20 75

History

Seizure of Qingyang

After Huangfu Yunhe's death, Yuan Hao consolidated power by purging or intimidating the Huangfu Family's remaining supporters. Although Qingyang remained stable for ordinary citizens under his administration, he held the legitimate Grand Duke under effective house arrest. 1 2

When Huangfu Ji awakened the mutated Sacred Martial War Dragon and Innate Full Soul Power, Yuan Hao immediately ordered the news sealed, tightened security around the Duke's Mansion, and forbade Huangfu Ji from contacting outsiders. He publicly claimed that Huangfu Ji possessed only Level Five Innate Soul Power. 3

Suppression of Huangfu Ji

Yuan Hao prevented Huangfu Ji from leaving the Duke's Mansion and repeatedly refused his requests to hunt a Soul Beast for a First Soul Ring. He eventually sent a ten-year Nether Wolf, an inadequate choice that Huangfu Ji rejected. 4

After Huangfu Ji exposed both his Innate Full Soul Power and his confinement, the Loyalty Faction forced Yuan Hao to permit him to enroll at Qingyang City's Junior Soul Master Academy. Yuan Hao yielded only after the Senior Soul Master Academy's dean threatened to involve the Empire. 5 6

Yuan Hao later allowed Huangfu Ji to obtain a First Soul Ring, but continued searching for indirect means to eliminate him. He instructed his son Yuan Ling to find an opportunity within the academy to cripple Huangfu Ji's Martial Soul. 10 15

Assassinations and Pursuit

A Soul Emperor assassin sent by Yuan Hao attacked Huangfu Ji inside the Junior Soul Master Academy. Yuan Hao publicly ordered an investigation while privately abandoning the matter after the attack failed. 23 24

When Huangfu Ji received admission to Heaven Dou Royal Academy, Yuan Hao allowed his departure only because imperial involvement constrained him. He and his advisors planned to have Huangfu Ji assassinated outside Qingyang Duchy instead. 34

Yuan Hao's men ambushed Huangfu Ji repeatedly after he left Qingyang, including an eight-man force containing a Soul King and three Soul Ancestors. Huangfu Ji escaped despite exhausting most of his Soul Power and killing one Soul Elder. 35

Political Expansion

While Huangfu Ji trained in Heaven Dou, Yuan Hao worked to secure recognition for his prospective rule. He bribed and lobbied imperial officials and nobles, including Prince Xue Xing, and sought backing from the Four Great Kingdoms. 27 55 75

Emperor Xue Ye distrusted Yuan Hao because of his unclear relationship with Spirit Hall and refused Xue Xing's proposal to make him Grand Duke Qingyang. 75

During the Star Luo invasion, Yuan Hao volunteered Qingyang forces for Heaven Dou's war effort to gain imperial favor. He deployed one hundred thousand soldiers under Sun Ke while assigning Jing Hong to assassinate Huangfu Ji. 77
