Fugaku first appears as the battle-hardened temporary leader of Team Five while Jiraiya is stationed at the front. He immediately singles out Namikaze Minato and Nishikawa Tetsu, dismisses formal introductions as a waste of time, and leads the newly graduated genin toward the Land of Rain war zone. 2

During the journey, Fugaku's pride in direct power clashes with Tetsu's reliance on poisons, traps, and improvised tools.
