Background / History

Earth Grudge Fear was identified as a technique possessed by the rogue ninja and bounty hunter Kakuzu. Konoha considered capturing him to acquire it, but Hiruzen Sarutobi instead pursued a purchase, seeking an undamaged and renewable supply. The technique had been verified by Mito Uzumaki as useful for clearing knotted blockages in severed meridians and for reattaching limbs. 63 64

Hiruzen and Shimura Danzō met Kakuzu outside the Land of Fire's capital to negotiate. After confirming that moderate harvesting would not cause irreversible harm, Hiruzen demonstrated that he could exploit Kakuzu's Earth Spear with Lightning Release, convincing Kakuzu to discuss terms rather than fight. 70

Following a full-strength spar, Kakuzu removed and packaged a dense portion of Earth Grudge Fear from his body. Konoha acquired it for twenty million ryō, while the remaining funds from the arrangement covered intelligence work and a future deposit. Kakuzu agreed to continue dealing with Konoha and to provide future deliveries. 71 72
