Background / History

Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi's disciple and one of the Sannin alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. Although their relationship had cooled after the Second Shinobi World War, he retained a rare, almost childlike familiarity around his former teacher. Hiruzen's renewed openness during their sparring session begins to repair that distance. 3

Before receiving formal village backing, Orochimaru's research had been associated with allegations involving experimental subjects obtained from unaffiliated Land of Fire tribes and captives abducted by Root. Hiruzen establishes a boundary for his work: Orochimaru may not act against Konoha residents or Land of Fire inhabitants without authorization. 2 28

Hiruzen converts Orochimaru's former underground base into a heavily funded, high-standard laboratory. With institutional support, Orochimaru becomes intensely invested in research serving Konoha rather than operating independently. 19
