Nature

Shinigami are spiritual entities responsible for managing the cycle of souls between Soul Society, the Human World, and Hueco Mundo. Their duties include performing soul burial guidance for the dead, preventing resentful souls from becoming Hollows, and eliminating Hollows when necessary 40 137.

Their strength is principally measured through spiritual pressure: the total amount of spiritual power a soul can contain and manipulate. A soul's spiritual-pressure rank is normally fixed upon arriving in Soul Society, making later breakthroughs exceptionally rare 11.

Zanpakutō

Every Shinigami possesses a Zanpakutō. It begins as an Asauchi, a blank blade shaped by its wielder's soul into a unique weapon with its own form and true name 8.

Shikai

Shikai is a Zanpakutō's first release. Mastering it while attending the Central Spirit Arts Academy is considered proof of exceptional talent 8.

• A Zanpakutō's appearance and true name reflect its wielder's soul.

• Captain candidates are generally expected to possess Bankai, though strength comparable to a Captain can be accepted in exceptional cases 102.
• Some Bankai are restricted because of their destructive scale, such as Kurayashiki Kenpachi's devouring Bankai 29.
• Bankai use can leave a Shinigami temporarily unable to use Shikai 100.

Abilities & Skills

Spiritual Pressure

Spiritual pressure determines a Shinigami's potential and combat endurance. High-level pressure can overwhelm weaker spiritual entities physically and mentally, while skilled users can suppress it so thoroughly that they appear to have no detectable presence 11 46 144.

• Spiritual-pressure ranks range from low classes to rare second- and third-rank levels 87 118.
• Spiritual power is harder to replenish in the Human World because of its low spirit-particle density 44.
• Quincy formations can drain Shinigami spiritual particles, particularly affecting weaker members 133.

Kidō

Kidō techniques allow Shinigami to attack, restrain, move targets, or otherwise manipulate spiritual power without relying solely on a Zanpakutō.

• Bakudō #8: Shō creates a forceful shockwave capable of knocking back a target 42.
• Modified Kidō can be adapted for battlefield evacuation, such as spiritual chains used to pull wounded allies through a Senkaimon 100.
• High-level offensive Kidō can destroy Great Hollows, as demonstrated by Hadō #63: Raikōhō 136.

Flash Step

Shinigami can use Flash Step for rapid movement, allowing them to vanish from sight and cross short distances almost instantly 42 136.

Organization

The Thirteen Court Guard Squads are Soul Society's principal military force. Divisions have specialized responsibilities, led by Captains and staffed by vice-captains, seated officers, and regular members 35 144.

Laws and Restrictions

Non-Interference in the Human World

Shinigami are forbidden from directly harming living humans. This is described as an unbreakable law even when humans are abusing souls or committing other spiritual crimes 42.

The prohibition also extends to interfering in the affairs of the living. The Quincy extermination campaign is explicitly recognized as a violation of this iron rule 131.

Rukongai Conduct

Shinigami cannot arbitrarily kill Rukongai residents, including powerful local criminals who maintain a violent but stable order in remote districts 29.

• Killing a dominant Rukongai figure can trigger wider conflict and abnormal death rates.
• Excessive deaths can destabilize the balance of spiritual particles and lead to orders for Hollow extermination in Hueco Mundo.
• Unless directly threatened or enforcing a clear judgment, Shinigami are expected to subdue rather than kill 29.

Spiritual Balance

Soul Society, the Human World, and Hueco Mundo depend on a delicate balance of spiritual particles. Shinigami eliminate Hollows to return Hueco Mundo's spiritual particles to the greater cycle, but excessive Hollow deaths can disrupt that balance 137.

When Soul Society's spiritual-particle total becomes too high, its authorities may reduce it through lethal “quantity adjustment,” including the mass killing of Rukongai souls 137.

• Ordinary Shinigami bodies gradually disperse into spiritual particles after death.
• Higher-pressure Shinigami dissipate much more slowly.
• Captain-level Shinigami require a special Konsō ritual rather than natural dissipation 66.
