Background

Urahara was originally assigned to the Second Division because no other division accepted him after graduation, despite his decent academy performance. The division's focus on assassination and interrogation left little room for his research interests. Yan Si later recommended him to Yoruichi Shihōin, helping establish a small research institute where Urahara could develop interrogation tools and specialized equipment. 13
