Power Progression

Background

Urahara was originally assigned to the Second Division because no other division accepted him after graduation, despite his decent academy performance. The division's focus on assassination and interrogation left little room for his research interests. Yan Si later recommended him to Yoruichi Shihōin, helping establish a small research institute where Urahara could develop interrogation tools and specialized equipment. 13

His early laboratory operated with limited Second Division funding. Yan Si became a major private backer, commissioning equipment and repeatedly investing in Urahara's projects. 13 14 77

During unrest among the noble families, Yoruichi promoted Urahara to Fifth Seat and intended to place the Insect Cage under his management, citing his clean background and sharp judgment. He subsequently served as manager of the Maggot's Nest. 61 93

Urahara later developed the Tenshintai to help Shinigami communicate with their Zanpakutō and pursue Bankai. Its prototype could be reused, though an incident involving Amatsuyu Takuru exposed flaws in its resonance-screening mechanism. 116

By the time the Twelfth Division captaincy became vacant, Urahara held the Second Division's Third Seat. He sought the position to establish a Research and Development Bureau devoted to technologies that could improve the world. With Yan Si's support and Yoruichi's nomination, he entered the captain assessment and defeated Kaname Tōsen, becoming the new Twelfth Division Captain. 177 178 182

After learning the truth about the Soul King's mutilation and role as the linchpin of the Three Realms, Urahara began reconsidering the consequences of his research with Yan Si. He continued establishing the Twelfth Division's new research facilities while weighing the danger that freeing the Soul King could destabilize the world. 187 191

His concern eventually causes him to stop working on the Soul Jade. After Mayuri challenges his indecision, Urahara resumes the project using a Soul King Fragment obtained through his connection to Yoruichi, together with Hollow material. The resulting research develops into the Hogyoku. 198 200 216

Following the Hollowification crisis and Aizen's departure, Urahara requests permission to resign as Twelfth Division Captain and concentrate on investigating the hidden threat beneath Seireitei. He subsequently serves as a vice-captain in the Court Security Guard Squad and establishes a well-funded research institute separate from the Research and Development Bureau. Personality

Urahara is brilliant, curious, and intensely enthusiastic when presented with a difficult research problem. Information concerning the Soul King's composite powers immediately reignites his interest in fusion research, and he rapidly begins planning experiments with both Yan Si's sealed powers and Kurotsuchi Mayuri's theories. 141

He is also financially opportunistic. He leverages technical dependence to secure funding, quoted Yan Si 300,000 kan to install an auxiliary spirit-particle circuit, and openly pushes for larger investments whenever a prototype requires “improvement.” 14 116

Despite his interest in forbidden subjects, Urahara retains a moral limit. He considers creating souls or life an excessively arrogant act and warns Yan Si against fusing severed desire with Hollow and Quincy power without sufficient research. 140

His concern for Yan Si is not limited to their financial partnership. He provides protective equipment before Yan Si's Human World mission and later admits that reports of a Great Hollow left him unable to eat or sleep properly while worrying about Yan Si's survival. 37 57

In combat, Urahara favors preparation, deception, and practical results over straightforward displays of honor. During the captain assessment, he combines concealed incantations, restraints, specialized equipment, decoys, and Bankai restructuring to overcome Tōsen. Despite these tactics, he treats his opponent courteously after the concession and promptly releases him. 182

Learning the Soul King's true condition deepens his conflict between curiosity, loyalty, and responsibility. He understands why Yan Si opposes the nobles and seeks to transcend Shinigami limits, but fears that liberation without a replacement for the world's stabilizing mechanism could bring catastrophe. Yan Si later suspects that this moral hesitation is slowing their shared research, although Urahara attributes the delay to his administrative duties. 187 191

Urahara also dislikes leaving important questions unresolved. During the Hollowification crisis, he privately considers whether Yan Si or Mayuri could be involved, but withholds judgment and chooses further investigation rather than acting on suspicion alone. 195 196

His hesitation is later explicitly confirmed to have halted the Soul Jade project. Mayuri's argument that a creation's use depends on its wielder persuades him to resume work. Urahara subsequently publicly endorses Yan Si's view that Hollow and Shinigami powers are tools rather than inherently moral or immoral forces. 198 220

Trust does not eliminate his caution. Even while cooperating with Yan Si and Hueco Mundo, he secretly maintains contingencies, including a trap within the original Soul Jade and a means of escaping spatial isolation. He personally returns to Soul Society because he considers both Yan Si's possible attack on the Soul King and his allies' inability or unwillingness to restrain him. 288

Nevertheless, he ultimately describes Yan Si as someone who gives him hope for a better future across the Three Realms. His support is therefore neither simple obedience nor an absence of doubts, but a continuing balance between friendship, reformist hopes, and protective preparations. 288 293

His later rematch with Tōsen emphasizes escape rather than victory. Having studied Enma Kōrogi's elliptical shape and limited range, he uses concealment, decoys, traps, and an explosion that throws him beyond its boundary. He then disappears rather than contesting Tōsen directly. 252

Fighting Shutara without prior intelligence makes him notably uneasy. He relies on Benihime, modified Kidō, decoys, and finally Bankai to survive and interfere with her bodily control. 293 294

During the later widespread Zanpakutō manifestation crisis, Benihime stitches Urahara into a ball. Despite his own predicament, he tells Yan Si that Kensei and the others have been taken to the Central Great Prison's Third Layer, Gōgō. 225
