Background / History

Aizen approached Fifth Seat Yan Si shortly after graduating from the Central Spirit Arts Academy. Though already possessing captain-level spiritual pressure, he considered Yan Si an intellectual equal after recognizing himself in Yan Si’s novel protagonist, Lan Chuan. Their first discussion centers on surpassing the limits of Shinigami power and the possibility of standing “above the sky.” 1

Before this meeting, Aizen had already arranged several apparently accidental encounters and tests during his Academy years. He initially suspected that Yan Si could foresee the future or write fate, but provisionally concluded that the novel’s resemblance to his own inner world arose from insight and imagination. This apparent discovery of a genuine kindred spirit pleased him more than the possibility of a supernatural explanation. He paid for Yan Si’s Spiritual Intoxication and explained that his minor-noble family background gave him spending money. 1

He initially sought assignment to the Ninth Division so that he could remain close to Yan Si, but Yan Si pushed him toward the Fifth Division. After helping pressure Yan Si into displaying his false ice-and-snow Shikai, Aizen accepted Hirako Shinji’s recruitment into the Fifth Division. 8 9

As a Fifth Seat, Aizen cultivated a reputation for gentleness and reliability while carefully monitoring Yan Si’s growth. He studied subtle irregularities in Yan Si’s Shikai, collected and reread Yan Si’s writings, and expected that they would eventually stand at the same height. 10

During the Hollow incursion, he publicly aided endangered Shinigami and urged prompt action to reduce casualties. Hirako, however, recognized that Aizen’s benevolent conduct could be a deliberate performance and remained suspicious of him. 47

Aizen later began deliberately feeding Hirako ambiguous references to nobles, kings, and the existing order. Yan Si concluded that these hints were intended to manipulate Hirako’s suspicions rather than reveal Aizen’s actual ambitions. 49

At Kuchiki Kyōka’s banquet, Aizen politely deflected nobles seeking to recruit talented young Shinigami into their families. He also redirected conversation toward Kyōka, praising the banquet’s principal guest while reducing attention on himself and Yan Si. During the same occasion, he approached Yan Si with a misleading explanation of his Zanpakutō and requested Shikai guidance, prompting Yan Si to postpone their proposed training. His later invitations continued to make Yan Si wary. 52 53 56 72

After Yan Si mentioned the Great Spirit Book Corridor, Aizen began secretly visiting it nightly. There he learned of the Soul King’s mutilation by the Five Great Noble Families and confirmed that Yan Si’s known ability concerned recording others’ pasts. 104 111

Reviewing Yan Si’s negotiations to preserve Kurayashiki Kenpachi, Aizen questioned whether Yan Si merely anticipated a future upheaval or intended to create it. He decided to accelerate his own plans and turned his attention toward the Tsunayashiro Clan. 111

Aizen also began researching the fusion of Shinigami, Hollow, and Quincy powers. He determined that Hollow and Quincy power directly conflict, considered Shinigami-Hollow fusion safer, and took particular interest in the Soul King fragment within Ukitake Jūshirō. 136

When Yan Si appeared in Seireitei as the self-proclaimed “King,” Aizen identified him not by spiritual pressure or appearance, but by the overwhelming bearing he had recognized years earlier. Rather than panic, he was exhilarated by Yan Si’s transformation and wanted to see what Yan Si would reveal. 143 145

Afterward, Aizen and Tōsen sought a Soul King Fragment in Rukongai’s Huāku District. Aizen considered Yamamoto and the Royal Palace’s defenses insurmountable through an ordinary direct assault, making a fundamental breakthrough beyond Shinigami limits necessary. Using information from the Great Spirit Book Corridor, he located Rangiku Matsumoto and forcibly extracted the fragment from her spiritual body. Rangiku survived but was severely weakened. The fragment’s Shinigami and Quincy traits, enclosed within a Hollow-Reishi structure, inspired the concept of containing Shinigami power within a Hollow shell. Gin Ichimaru secretly witnessed the incident and waited until the pair departed before helping Rangiku. 150

While continuing his Fifth Division duties, Aizen also taught first-year Academy students. He observed Gin’s talent and discussed his future with Yan Si, who openly intended to recruit the boy into the Ninth Division. At Gin’s graduation, Aizen again questioned which captain Gin would choose. 156 158

Aizen attempted to maneuver Yan Si into Central 46, expecting its corruption to provoke Yan Si into investigating forbidden matters and confronting Soul Society’s upper echelon. Yan Si instead deliberately damaged his own reputation to prevent his appointment, surprising Aizen and frustrating that plan. Aizen then refocused on accelerating his research as Hueco Mundo became increasingly active. 162

In District 78, Aizen’s Hollowification experiments demonstrated that even low-level Hollow material could substantially increase a Shinigami’s spiritual pressure. However, his subjects lost their reason and became savage Hollows. He began considering Quincy power or another third force as a possible stabilizer and concealed the experimental traces from Twelfth Division investigators. During this period, he instructed Tōsen to apply for a transfer out of Yan Si’s division. 165

Aizen later deployed an experimental Shinigami-powered Adjuchas in Yoshiwara. It killed the assigned Shinigami and attacked Kūgo Ginjō as a test of whether absorbing Ginjō’s Soul King Fragment could advance its evolution. Yan Si destroyed it. Rather than attempt to seize the fragment himself, Aizen restrained Tōsen and cited an understanding with Yan Si. 174

Following the Royal Palace incident, Aizen personally observed the Soul King’s mutilated and imprisoned condition. Although he had previously learned of the mutilation through records, seeing it directly gave him a clearer ultimate goal and briefly disrupted his normally flawless composure. He credited Yan Si with exposing the truth and subsequently expanded his experiments. 111 187 190

In Hueco Mundo, Aizen trapped Baraggan in repeated illusions while taking control of thousands of Hollows for research. He ordered Tōsen to distribute them among Human World experiments, searches for unusual abilities in Soul Society, and refinement into research material. He then departed through a Garganta he opened himself, leaving Baraggan attacking nonexistent enemies. 190

Hirako’s suspicions intensified as he noticed Aizen’s excessively consistent behavior and apparent distance from Yan Si. He granted Aizen three days’ leave and arranged an inspection of the administrative office, where the Kidō Corps found a protected white box whose connection to Aizen remained uncertain. As Hollowification incidents and perceptual irregularities spread, Hirako asked Yan Si to investigate Aizen. During their subsequent late-night visit, Aizen welcomed them, served homemade wine, and readily agreed that Yan Si could write about his past. Yan Si signaled that he detected no obvious problem, but Hirako remained unconvinced. 192 196 197

After the drinking encounter, Aizen deliberately told Hirako that the “stage” was nearly ready and called Yan Si its organizer. He also compiled an account of his covert investigation into the Research and Development Bureau, describing residual Hollow Reishi and suggesting that Urahara’s research had been influenced by an outside party. He later infiltrated the Bureau while impersonating Urahara and obtained a Soul Jade prototype; Mayuri recognized the impersonation because the real research had already advanced to the Hōgyoku stage. 198 201 202 204

Aizen used the stolen Soul Jade in further tests, dismissing Aaroniero as a failed specimen while retaining the experimental data. He then entered the Kuchiki estate with Tōsen, disabled the alarms and seals around Kyōka’s hidden chamber, and persuaded Muramasa to allow his intervention. Using the Soul Jade and thirty milliliters of refined power from ten thousand Hollows, he broke Kyōka’s bindings and initiated a transformation that raised Kyōka from Second-Class into First-Class spiritual pressure. 204 206

As the crisis expanded, Aizen studied the differences between Kyōka’s unstable Hollow-dominated transformation and the consumable Soul Jades used by Kensei Muguruma and Kyunnan Shiro. He covertly guided the latter experimentation, sent Kyōka to attack the nobles responsible for his imprisonment, and continued gathering data. His objective was not a single increase in power, but a device capable of limitless evolution. 220

At the Hill of the Twin Executions, Aizen openly revealed his betrayal, the true nature of Kyōka Suigetsu, and the decades of deception behind his harmless public identity. He gravely wounded Shiba Isshin, overpowered Shiba Kaien, and subsequently attacked the Visored and Kenpachi Zaraki. His illusions caused Yamamoto to kill Chōjirō Sasakibe. Before Yan Si could confront him directly and Yamamoto could unleash a devastating attack, Gillian extracted Aizen and Tōsen to Hueco Mundo. Aizen shattered his glasses, declared that he would stand above heaven, and promised to return. He also obtained the vast Shinigami soul power held by the execution weapon for his evolutionary research. 232 233 234

At Las Noches, Aizen added Quincy soul power to his Soul Jade after locating a pocket dimension in the Dangai and exterminating its Quincy inhabitants. The resulting Hōgyoku incorporated Shinigami, Hollow, and Quincy powers, but Aizen initially declined to fuse with it because he sensed that something was still missing. He used it to transform Nelliel into an Arrancar, named her the Third Espada, and built an army while continuing research into emotion, evolution, and methods of transcending the Three Realms’ existing powers. 245 246 250 251 253

When Soul Society reported Yan Si’s death, Aizen reviewed the Espada’s evolutionary progress and then traveled to Karakura Town. He found Yan Si alive in a bookstore, accepted a novel from him, and sat reading alongside him. Their subsequent discussions led both men to suspect that an outside power had influenced their choices. They agreed to seek transcendence and coordinate Hueco Mundo, the Human World, and Soul Society against the powers above them, using Yhwach’s recovery as an opportunity. 272 276

Aizen arranged for the Quincy and Shinigami to be brought to Hueco Mundo, then departed with Yan Si for Soul Society while Tōsen managed the battlefield and Ulquiorra sealed its space. Yan Si’s explanation that the Three Realms existed within a protective shell led Aizen to infer an outside world containing powerful enemies. His ambition consequently shifted from merely redefining the Three Realms to leading them into the unknown. He joined Yan Si, Yoruichi, and Chiziro Kenpachi in the Shiba family’s launch toward the Royal Palace and accepted the assignment to fight Ichibē Hyōsube. 280 284 290

Although Ichibē initially disabled Kyōka Suigetsu and overpowered him, Aizen used advanced Kidō to continue fighting. Ichibē’s subsequent renaming and crushing attack triggered Aizen’s Hōgyoku evolution. Aizen emerged as a Transcendent whose spiritual power Ichibē could no longer sense and pierced Ichibē’s chest with his hand. 296 297 298

After the Soul King revealed his intention to enter Hell, Aizen and Yan Si arranged a one-on-one confrontation while the Shinigami and Espada withdrew. Yan Si’s Future Slash severed Aizen’s hand and damaged his chest and Hōgyoku before his full-power Black Coffin could activate. Aizen began evolving again, but further attacks triggered the sealing mechanism Urahara had hidden in the Soul Jade. Urahara and Mayuri reinforced it with black Spirit-Sealing Cloth and the Black Chair. Aizen remained alive, with his soul presence continuing to strengthen despite his confinement. 306 307

Aizen subsequently accepted judgment and requested to join the Hell Investigation Corps so that contributions to Soul Society could reduce his sentence. In later operations, Ulquiorra revealed that Aizen had instructed him to treat Yan Si’s orders as equivalent to his own whenever Aizen had given no conflicting instructions. 311 316

In war-ravaged Amegakure, Aizen established Dawnlight Village, dispersed the rain clouds, and took Yahiko and the other children under his protection as “Dawn.” He sent Nel to kill Hanzō and dispatched Ulquiorra with the children to bring the people and food of the Land of Whirlpools to Dawnlight. Ulquiorra killed Shimura Danzō and his accompanying forces, then led the survivors away under Dawnlight’s protection. 325

Appearance

Aizen is a brown-haired Shinigami who initially presents himself as composed, scholarly, and approachable.

Personality

Aizen consistently projects warmth, patience, humility, and concern for others. He can sustain relaxed conversation across subjects and makes companions feel comfortable enough to lower their guard. 1 104

Beneath this exterior, he is highly observant, analytical, and manipulative. He uses selectively truthful statements, polite requests, and calculated ambiguity to guide others toward conclusions he wants them to reach. Hirako considers his mask tighter than Yan Si’s and senses that something is fundamentally wrong with him despite lacking proof. 47 49

Aizen values intellectual equality more than simple differences in spiritual power. He sees Yan Si as a rare kindred spirit and is fascinated by people who possess the inner capacity to transcend established limits. 1 10 145

His research reveals a ruthless willingness to exploit vulnerable people. He reassures Rangiku while forcibly removing part of her soul, uses Shinigami as Hollowification subjects, and orders Hollows to infect unborn children by attacking pregnant women without killing them. His gentle manner persists even when his actions are cruel. 150 165 190

Aizen distinguishes pride from complacency and arrogance. He encourages Tōsen’s growth but warns that increased strength does not justify lowering his guard. He interprets Yan Si’s declaration that a king must lead others forward as applicable to spiritual advancement and overcoming Shinigami limits, not merely territorial expansion. 165

Despite his ambitions, he exercises strategic restraint. He postpones action against Ukitake, declines to attack Yan Si over Ginjō’s fragment, and treats differing methods as compatible with a shared goal. His restraint does not amount to renouncing experimentation; he continues pursuing alternatives that advance his objectives. 136 174

Seeing the Soul King directly produces an unusual lapse in his composure. Hirako notices him appearing distracted, and Aizen later acknowledges that the revelation briefly left his mind blank. He recovers by redirecting the conversation toward Yan Si and a possible congratulatory gift. 187

Aizen regards the Hollowification inflicted on the Visored as a “gift” that allowed them to surpass their natural limits. He claims that strengthening them also prepares Soul Society to face the concealed shadow beneath it, but his victims reject this justification. His willingness to explain Kyōka Suigetsu publicly reflects confidence that knowing its mechanism will not compensate for the difference in combat ability and intellect. 233 234

He describes himself as lacking the extreme emotions that drive Hollow evolution and admits that he has never experienced fear of death. As a child, however, he possessed intense desires to become stronger and understand the world. He considers the possibility that a mortal threat could supply the emotion necessary for Hōgyoku fusion. 253

His desire for autonomy becomes more pronounced after he suspects that someone has been arranging his decisions. He repeatedly reexamines his choices to prevent others from exploiting them, and his inability to explain why he undertook Ichigo Kurosaki’s creation becomes evidence that even his own intellect may have been manipulated. 284 306

After transcendence, his confidence develops into an openly superior attitude toward people he expects to rule. He trusts the Hōgyoku’s decisions so completely that he mistakenly interprets Kyōka Suigetsu’s absorption as proof that he no longer needs its power. Nevertheless, he can still praise an opponent’s technique immediately after suffering a serious wound, and he regains his composure when the hidden seal activates. He admits that he had knowingly kept the compromised Soul Jade because he was curious about what Yan Si had concealed within it. 304 307

His later conduct in Amegakure combines a deliberately miraculous display of power with the organization and protection of a devastated community. He names the village and its children, removes Hanzō as a threat, and arranges the evacuation of the Land of Whirlpools’ survivors into his territory. 325

Captain-Level Spiritual Pressure

Aizen possessed captain-level spiritual pressure while still at the Central Spirit Arts Academy, vastly exceeding Yan Si’s strength at their first meeting. 1

• His spiritual pressure is among the highest in Soul Society, though he does not consider raw spiritual pressure the sole measure of a person’s worth. 145

Hirako’s scrutiny shifts from looking for obvious misconduct to questioning Aizen’s unnatural perfection. His three-day leave arrangement exposes both Aizen’s administrative workload and a hidden protected box in the office, though ownership of the box remains unresolved. 192

At the emergency captains’ meeting, perceptual inconsistencies and Hollowification incidents are discussed as possible signs of a concealed enemy. Yan Si privately links some irregularities to Kyōka Suigetsu but withholds that assessment. Hirako subsequently asks him to investigate Aizen. 196

Their late-night visit remains outwardly convivial: Aizen shares homemade Hundred Flowers Wine and accepts the idea of Yan Si writing his life. Soul Jade Theft and Kyōka’s Awakening

Aizen’s investigation of the Research and Development Bureau moves from covert sampling to direct infiltration. While impersonating Urahara, he discusses continuing Soul Jade research with Mayuri, who realizes that he lacks the real Urahara’s knowledge of the project’s progress. Aizen nevertheless obtains a prototype and proceeds with field experiments involving Aaroniero. 201 202 204

He then brings the Soul Jade to Kyōka’s hidden chamber in the Kuchiki estate. After dismantling its defenses and securing Muramasa’s cooperation, he removes Kyōka’s bindings while Tōsen administers the concentrated power of ten thousand Hollows. Kyōka’s spiritual pressure rises into First Class as a Hollow mask begins forming. Aizen retrieves the orb and departs to observe what the newly empowered prisoner will do. 206

The following crisis becomes a comparative study of power-fusion methods. Aizen observes that Kyōka’s enormous Hollow component disrupts his connection to Muramasa, whereas Kensei and Kyunnan receive greater amplification of their Shinigami abilities through different, consumable Soul Jades. He uses the turmoil to gather data and sends Kyōka after the nobles responsible for his imprisonment. 220

Betrayal at the Hill of the Twin Executions

Aizen, Tōsen, and Kyōka gather at the execution site as Shinigami converge on them. Aizen then proves that hypnosis is not his only advantage, rapidly incapacitating the Visored and wounding Zaraki through direct combat. Before Yan Si and Yamamoto can bring their full attacks to bear, Gillian carry Aizen and Tōsen to Hueco Mundo. Aizen destroys his glasses and announces that he will stand above heaven. 233

Urahara subsequently identifies the execution weapon’s store of soul power as Aizen’s objective. He reasons that Aizen intends to develop an instrument of continuous evolution rather than settle for a single Hollowification enhancement. 234

Hōgyoku Development and the Espada

In Las Noches, Aizen develops his Soul Jade further by adding Quincy soul power collected from a hidden pocket dimension in the Dangai. Even after combining the Three Realms’ major power types, he postpones using it on himself because he senses an unresolved deficiency. 245

Nelliel becomes a successful demonstration of the Hōgyoku’s transformative ability. Aizen names her the Third Espada and allows her to protect Hollows in her palace. He assigns Tōsen to manufacture additional consumable Soul Jades while continuing to question what his own Hōgyoku lacks. 246

When Yan Si visits Las Noches, Aizen shares tea with him and exchanges information: Yan Si identifies Squad Zero’s bones as the Ōken, while Aizen explains his findings about extreme emotion and Hollow evolution. He sends Tōsen to confront the infiltrating Urahara without interrupting their discussion. 251

Aizen later acknowledges that his own lack of extreme emotion may obstruct fusion and speculates about the evolutionary effect of facing death. He also saves Starrk from Kurayashiki’s spatially confining attack and presses him to confront the solitude underlying his existence. 253 254

Yan Si’s Reported Death and the Alliance

The report that Yan Si has died in Muken prompts Aizen to review the Espada’s second evolutions and then leave Hueco Mundo. After suppressing his spiritual pressure in the Dangai, he appears at Yan Si’s bookstore in Karakura Town and finds him alive. Their reunion is quiet rather than confrontational: Yan Si offers him a book, and they read together. 272

Their subsequent conversation shifts the scope of Aizen’s ambitions. Both suspect that choices they believed their own may have been influenced by a higher power, and both conclude that transcendence is necessary to challenge it. Aizen accepts Yan Si’s proposal to locate Yhwach when his power returns and bring the forces of Hueco Mundo, the Human World, and Soul Society into a common operation. 276

The Three-Realm Battlefield

Aizen orders the Espada to prepare for a battle in Hueco Mundo and uses Ulquiorra to bring the Quincy and Shinigami into the arranged battlefield. When Yhwach proposes an alliance to destroy Soul Society, Aizen instead calls upon Urahara’s preparations, revealing that the situation is more complex than a straightforward struggle among three hostile camps. 280 281

As the fighting develops, Aizen confronts Baraggan’s assumption that he will be spared during the decisive battle. He effortlessly avoids the former king’s attacks and allows an axe blow to strike him without damage. 282

Aizen then leaves Tōsen in command and orders Ulquiorra to devote his full effort to sealing space. He departs with Yan Si for Soul Society, where the explanation of the Three Realms’ protective shell reveals a greater world beyond them. His objective changes from ruling and redefining the existing realms to leading them outward. 284 290

Royal Palace Assault and Transcendence

Aizen joins Yan Si, Yoruichi, and Chiziro Kenpachi in the Shiba family’s launch into the Royal Palace. Yan Si assigns him to Ichibē, the strongest member of Squad Zero. Unknown to Aizen’s allies in the assault, Urahara’s agreement to cooperate with Yan Si includes a plan to seal Aizen after his expected defeat. 290 291

Ichibē initially counters Kyōka Suigetsu and blackens the sword, forcing Aizen to rely on other disciplines. Aizen combines and alters advanced Kidō, injures Ichibē, and copies a forbidden spell during the exchange. 296 297

Ichibē escalates by blackening Aizen’s body, renaming him a “caterpillar,” and crushing him beneath a gigantic foot. The attack instead precipitates the Hōgyoku breakthrough Aizen had sought. He emerges beyond the ordinary limits of Shinigami, Hollow, and Quincy power, approaches without Ichibē sensing him, and pierces his chest. Aizen declares that he has become a Transcendent and now stands above the heavens. 298

His new confidence extends to the other arrivals at the Palace, whom he permits to assemble for the final “curtain call.” He claims that his evolved state cannot be killed because death will only cause him to grow stronger. 302 304

Final Duel and Sealing

After Yan Si brings Yhwach’s and Ichibē’s bodies before the Soul King, the imprisoned creator reveals his wish to enter Hell. Aizen reacts coldly to the implications of the Soul King’s influence over prior events and questions why he has waited until this point. With the explanation concluded, Yan Si arranges the withdrawal of the Shinigami and asks Aizen to send the Espada home before their private confrontation. Tōsen and Yoruichi remain as witnesses. 306

Aizen correctly infers that Yan Si’s power does not require visible writing, but fails to accept the corresponding explanation that Kyōka Suigetsu has returned to his body rather than disappeared. His certainty that the Hōgyoku has discarded his Zanpakutō prevents him from using its ability. 307

When Aizen attempts a full-power Black Coffin, Future Slash removes his hand and wounds his chest and Hōgyoku. Yan Si explains that he has already cut Aizen in the future rather than merely written a predetermined outcome. The injuries trigger further evolution, but additional strikes activate Urahara’s concealed seal before the transformation completes. 307

Aizen reveals that he has known of the Soul Jade’s hidden interference since obtaining it and retained it out of curiosity about Yan Si’s plan. Urahara and Mayuri arrive to reinforce the restraints, enclosing him in black Spirit-Sealing Cloth and binding him to the Black Chair. His outward spiritual pressure is nearly extinguished, but Yan Si perceives that his soul continues to strengthen. 307

Judgment and the Hell Investigation Corps

Aizen accepts judgment under a system allowing contributions to Soul Society to reduce his sentence. He requests membership in the proposed Hell Investigation Corps rather than simply remaining passive in confinement. 311

His authority over Hueco Mundo remains significant in later operations. Ulquiorra explains that Aizen had already instructed him to obey Yan Si as he would Aizen whenever no contrary order exists, clarifying the basis for the Hollows’ cooperation after the war. 316

Dawnlight Village

In Amegakure, Aizen takes control of a devastated community and names it Dawnlight Village. He sends Nel against Hanzō and parts the clouds above the settlement, stopping its persistent rain in a public demonstration of power. Yahiko asks to serve him, and Aizen names Yahiko and the other children “Dawn.” 325

Aizen assigns Ulquiorra and the children to retrieve the Land of Whirlpools’ people and food. Ulquiorra kills Danzō and his accompanying forces with Ceros, then offers the surviving inhabitants refuge under Dawnlight’s protection. The survivors follow him and the children away from the island. 325
