Background / History

Aizen approached Fifth Seat Yan Si shortly after graduating from the Central Spirit Arts Academy. Though already possessing captain-level spiritual pressure, he considered Yan Si an intellectual equal after recognizing himself in Yan Si’s novel protagonist, Lan Chuan. Their first discussion centers on surpassing the limits of Shinigami power and the possibility of standing “above the sky.” 1

He initially sought assignment to the Ninth Division so that he could remain close to Yan Si, but Yan Si pushed him toward the Fifth Division. After helping pressure Yan Si into displaying his false ice-and-snow Shikai, Aizen accepted Hirako Shinji’s recruitment into the Fifth Division. 8 9

As a Fifth Seat, Aizen cultivated a reputation for gentleness and reliability while carefully monitoring Yan Si’s growth. He studied subtle irregularities in Yan Si’s Shikai, collected and reread Yan Si’s writings, and expected that they would eventually stand at the same height. 10

During the Hollow incursion, he publicly aided endangered Shinigami and urged prompt action to reduce casualties. Hirako, however, recognized that Aizen’s benevolent conduct could be a deliberate performance and remained suspicious of him. 47

Aizen later began deliberately feeding Hirako ambiguous references to nobles, kings, and the existing order. Yan Si concluded that these hints were intended to manipulate Hirako’s suspicions rather than reveal Aizen’s actual ambitions. 49

After Yan Si mentioned the Great Spirit Book Corridor, Aizen began secretly visiting it nightly. There he learned of the Soul King’s mutilation by the Five Great Noble Families and confirmed that Yan Si’s known ability concerned recording others’ pasts. 104 111

Aizen also began researching the fusion of Shinigami, Hollow, and Quincy powers. He determined that Hollow and Quincy power directly conflict, considered Shinigami-Hollow fusion safer, and took particular interest in the Soul King fragment within Ukitake Jūshirō. 136

When Yan Si appeared in Seireitei as the self-proclaimed “King,” Aizen identified him not by spiritual pressure or appearance, but by the overwhelming bearing he had recognized years earlier. Rather than panic, he was exhilarated by Yan Si’s transformation and wanted to see what Yan Si would reveal. 143 145
