History

Founding and standing

Konohagakure was jointly founded by the Senju and Uchiha clans. Its founding principle held that ninja clans were free to join or leave, though this principle was later invoked against the village leadership by Uchiha Fugaku. 75

Its extensive foundation of secret techniques and resources allowed it to remain the leading ninja village even while facing multiple enemies during the previous Great Ninja Wars. 10

Decline under Hiruzen Sarutobi

Despite winning the Third Shinobi World War, Konohagakure paid a major indemnity to Kumogakure. The Nine-Tails' Rampage devastated half the village and killed the Fourth Hokage and his wife; Tsunade disappeared, Jiraiya was absent, Orochimaru defected, and Hizashi Hyuga died. Nearly a thousand elderly, weak, female, and child Uchiha escaped through a tunnel beneath the northwestern village wall before the Anbu and Root recognized the operation. The remaining groups followed, while a force of roughly one hundred prime-age Uchiha remained behind as a rearguard. 73

The withdrawal became a bloody confrontation after Danzō branded the Uchiha traitors and ordered their annihilation. Fugaku was killed, hundreds died, and the clan departed Konohagakure for Kumogakure. 76 82 85

Hokage crisis and war

During the Uchiha conflict, Neji stole the Scroll of Seals from the Hokage Building while Obito removed the village's Wood Release cells and additional documents. Naruto was also abducted in the ensuing chaos. 75 82

Konohagakure later fought Kumogakure during the wider conflict involving Iwagakure and Kirigakure. After Kirigakure allied with Kumogakure, Konoha's forces were pushed back to Kikyo Castle and forced into a defensive position. 100 116 117

Orochimaru invaded the Hokage Building and killed Hiruzen Sarutobi. In the same period, Hinata was abducted from the Hyuga compound, intensifying the village's internal instability. 119 121

Otsutsuki threat and alliance

After an Otsutsuki attack killed Hyuga patriarch Gensuke and stole a main-family pair of Byakugan, Konohagakure shared its intelligence with the other villages and hosted a Five Kage Summit. 153
