Background / History

Origins and heritage

The Uchiha are descendants of Indra Ōtsutsuki, son of Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki. Their hereditary Yin Release ocular power develops through the Sharingan, Mangekyō Sharingan, Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and Rinnegan stages 90 153.

During the Warring States Period, the Uchiha were one of the ninja world's strongest clans alongside the Senju and Hyuga. Their later alliance with the Senju founded Konohagakure 39 75.

The Uchiha Stone Tablet preserves clan history and the Sage of Six Paths' teachings, but Black Zetsu secretly inserted the Moon Eye Plan into its text. The tablet's increasing readability with stronger ocular power helped convince Uchiha Madara that the plan was genuine 90.

Madara's departure

Madara attempted to lead the Uchiha away from Konohagakure after breaking with Hashirama, but his clansmen rejected the move and he departed alone. Before leaving, he took the clan's Sharingan research materials, Three-Tomoe Sharingan, and forbidden techniques such as Izanagi; later Uchiha techniques were recompiled by the elders 2 90.

Isolation in Konohagakure

Following the Nine-Tails' Rampage, Danzō moved the Uchiha compound to Konohagakure's outskirts under the pretext of residential planning and placed the clan under surveillance. The perceived Sharingan in the Nine-Tails' eyes intensified the village leadership's distrust 54.

The deaths of Uchiha Tekka and Uchiha Itachi further destabilized the clan. Neji lured Itachi to the Forest of Death and killed him with Yugito, intending to provoke a Uchiha–Konoha rupture for Kumogakure's benefit 59 69. Shisui's investigation led him to Danzō's implanted Three-Tomoe Sharingan; he removed the eye, while Fugaku exposed his own Mangekyō Sharingan 69.

Exodus and resettlement

Fugaku rejected a coup, arguing that the Uchiha could not defeat all of Konohagakure and that remaining in the village would lead to mutual destruction. The clan instead voted to leave and seek refuge in Kumogakure 71 72 75.

Danzō branded the departing clan traitors and initiated a battle. Fugaku was killed during the conflict, after which the surviving Uchiha escaped Konohagakure 76 82. Shisui succeeded Fugaku as clan head and led the clan into Kumogakure, where the Fourth Raikage formally received them 83 84.

Kumogakure assigned the Uchiha a residential district near the Raikage Building. Dodai proposed marriage alliances to ease integration; Neji volunteered, and Mikoto was selected as his bride 84 85.

Dōjutsu & Clan Techniques

Sharingan

The Sharingan is the Uchiha's defining bloodline ability. Its One-, Two-, and Three-Tomoe forms grant the perception and high-speed calculation needed for techniques that ordinary shinobi cannot reproduce 29 65.

• Three-Tomoe Sharingan are rare even among the Uchiha 60.
• The eye's precision supports projectile combat, genjutsu, and the reading of opponents' movements 29 136.
• The Sharingan's reputation and the fear of its power were central to Konoha's suspicion of the clan after the Nine-Tails' Rampage 54 76.

Mangekyō Sharingan

The Mangekyō Sharingan is the Sharingan's ultimate form. Its abilities differ by user and can manifest Susanoo, a chakra giant with formidable offensive and defensive power 65 108.

• Uchiha Fugaku awakened Mangekyō Sharingan and used Susanoo during the clash with Konoha 69 76.
• Uchiha Shisui manifested a green Susanoo and pushed it near its ordinary Mangekyō limit during the battle against the Six Paths of Pain 139.
• Ordinary Mangekyō users suffer severe ocular-power depletion from excessive use and cannot readily recover from it 139.
• Uchiha Hikari is an exception: her Mangekyō does not carry the usual blindness risk 103.

Uchiha Stone Tablet

The Stone Tablet is a clan relic whose sections correspond to the Sharingan, Mangekyō Sharingan, Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and Rinnegan. Its contents can only be deciphered progressively as a reader's ocular power increases 90.

• It records Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, Hagoromo's defeat of the Ten-Tails, and the conflict between Indra and Asura 90.
• Its phrase, “When two mutually exclusive forces become one, all creation can be obtained,” can refer to the union of Uchiha Yin Release and Senju Yang Release to awaken the Rinnegan 90.
• Black Zetsu altered the tablet to promote the Moon Eye Plan while concealing the manipulation from its readers 90.

Notable Members

• Uchiha Madara — Former clan member who left Konohagakure alone after the clan rejected his proposed departure; removed the Uchiha's Sharingan research and other assets when he left 2 90.
• Uchiha Fugaku — Clan head during the Konoha crisis; possessed Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo. He opposed a coup but was killed during the clan's departure 69 76 82.
• Uchiha Shisui — Fugaku's successor as clan head; led the survivors into Kumogakure and later wielded a green Susanoo 83 139.
