Background / History
Letho was born in Goulart and was taken in his youth to Gwyntd, the School of the Viper’s mountain stronghold in Tir Tochair. He survived the school’s mutations and became a Viper Witcher specializing in close combat and alchemy. 12 11
The School of the Viper declined severely after a disaster connected to the Wild Hunt. By the time Letho met Roy, the school had received no new apprentices for twenty years, and its Law of Surprise had failed to provide new blood. Letho sought to revive the school, locate its missing grandmaster Ivar Evil Eye, and recover the school’s future. 13 156 494
After Roy helped defeat the Grave Witch, Letho accepted him as a prospective apprentice and arranged for Roy’s parents to be escorted to Novigrad. He then trained Roy in the practical disciplines of a Witcher before helping secure the Trial of the Grasses at the Meritelli Temple. 13 14 106
Letho was abducted while investigating murders near Aedirn’s palace and was later discovered chained in a Sun Cult secret chamber. Roy rescued him after exposing Zerwatto as the culprit. 118 130
In later years, Letho became a central instructor and senior member of the Witcher Brotherhood. He helped train orphan apprentices, operated the Brotherhood’s alchemy program, and continued working toward the restoration of Witcher schools. 366 377 409
Appearance
Letho is an exceptionally large, bald Witcher with a severe, intimidating presence. His physique is repeatedly compared to a bear or rock: heavily muscled, broad-backed, and powerful enough to make ordinary people avoid provoking him. 11 20
- Over 6 feet 4 inches tall. 11
- Shiny bald scalp, high-bridged nose, deep-set eyes, and a rigid expression. 11
- Amber, feline pupils typical of a Witcher. 11
- Hunched, bear-like build with massive, rock-defined muscles. 11
- Usually wears scarred black leather armor marked by old bloodstains and battle damage. 11
- Wears a coiled-viper medallion identifying him with the School of the Viper. 11
- After captivity, his scalp appeared dull and his face was swollen, though he remained conscious and recognized Roy. 130
Personality
Letho is outwardly stoic, blunt, and difficult to read. His expression is usually described as a deadpan mask, and he responds to threats, prejudice, and insults with composure rather than visible anger. 12 52 96
Behind this harsh exterior, he is a patient and meticulous mentor. He treats Roy’s injuries, teaches him herbs, survival methods, crossbow use, Meditation, alchemy, swordsmanship, monster knowledge, and Witcher principles. He also personally captured incapacitated wild dogs so Roy could train safely. 15 18 47 107 113
Letho believes Witchers must remain neutral in political struggles, regard fair distribution of spoils as essential, and avoid letting greed or poison corrupt them. He is particularly strict about the School of the Viper’s legacy and refuses to condone indiscriminate killing through poison. 19 28 99
He can be severe when Roy oversteps his authority or risks drawing the group into political affairs, but his concern is rooted in protecting his apprentice and preserving the school’s future. 185 157
