Background / History
Geralt is a Wolf School Witcher who survived the Trial of the Grasses. His mutations granted him enhanced physical abilities and senses, but also left him with white hair and an unusually rigid, deadpan expression. He trained at Kaer Morhen under Vesemir alongside Eskal. 176 345
He initially adheres to the traditional Witcher principles of neutrality and contract work. His reluctance to recruit children stems from the suffering and sacrifices inherent to Witcher training. 346 354
While on a royal mission in Brokilon, Geralt aids the wounded Fisstech, earns the Dryads’ recognition through his knowledge of their language, and joins Vesemir in killing a Giant Centipede. 175 He subsequently meets Roy, a young Viper School Witcher, and Ciri in Brokilon; their paths become closely linked. 176
Roy persuades Geralt to support the Witcher Brotherhood and its effort to unite the surviving schools. Geralt ultimately joins to defend Kaer Morhen and protect Ciri from the dangers Roy foresees. 354
As Nilfgaard threatens Cintra, Geralt abandons strict neutrality to warn Queen Calanthe and secure Ciri’s safety. After the invasion, he continues searching for Ciri until their reunion at Eight Men’s Hill. 409 498 514 He later invites Yennefer to Gawain’s Home and supports her instruction of Ciri’s magical talent. 515 517
Appearance
Geralt is a tall, weather-beaten Witcher with a deliberately unkempt appearance and a famously impassive face. His white hair and scarred, cat-like eyes make him immediately recognizable. 176 338
- Around 6.2 feet (1.9 meters) tall. 176
- White hair, often tied back with a black ribbon; later described as long and greasy when neglected. 176 338
- Deep, indifferent beast-like eyes and a long scar crossing his left brow and lower eyelid. 176
- Narrow face, high-bridged nose, thick lips, gray stubble, and a sharply defined jaw. 176
- Usually carries two swords and wears worn Witcher clothing or armor. 176 338
Personality
Geralt projects coldness and detachment, yet repeatedly acts with compassion. He assists wounded people even when doing so complicates his duties, as shown by his concern for Fisstech in Brokilon. 175
He is stubborn, private, and uncomfortable with openly confronting his feelings—particularly where Yennefer and Ciri are concerned. Roy repeatedly challenges Geralt’s habit of avoiding those closest to him. 354
Ciri changes Geralt’s priorities. Though he calls himself an ordinary Witcher and fears involving his brothers in war, he chooses to act when her safety is threatened. 409
