Training and Ranks

• Refining and using chakra is the defining distinction between a ninja and a commoner. A strong body and focused mind help a trainee take that first step 1.
• Ninja Academy students study chakra, basic techniques, ninja tools, combat, and subjects such as ciphers. Combat ability remains the principal measure of a frontline ninja 2 22.
• Genin can take D-rank assignments that combine paid work with practice in basic skills, including walking on trees and water 39 41.
• Jonin hold political influence as well as combat rank: they can vote in the Jonin Council on the Hokage and village policy 10.

Abilities and Methods

Chakra and techniques

• Ninja use chakra to perform ninjutsu and genjutsu and to enhance physical combat 10 14.
• Most have limited chakra reserves. Kunai, shuriken, and other tools therefore remain central to ordinary ninja combat, rather than sustained use of large ninjutsu 14 22.

Mobility and intelligence

• Speed and mobility let squads patrol borders, track enemies, infiltrate positions, and retreat to seek support when outmatched 24.
• A reconnaissance squad that discovers a large enemy force is expected to report it to headquarters rather than try to stop it alone 24.

Equipment and Supplies

• Kunai and shuriken — common weapons for throwing and close combat 22 67.
• Explosive tags and smoke bombs — tools used in combat and deception 22 84.
• Food and ration pills — essential supplies; ration pills are for emergencies and cannot replace meals 31.

History and Society

Ninja clans once fought smaller mercenary conflicts and retained some freedom to refuse employers. Under the one-country, one-village system, ninja villages became organized military forces tied to nations; wars grew larger, and younger ninja could still be sent to fight when adult casualties mounted 20 61.

Village warfare relies on dispersed squads, layered border defenses, intelligence gathering, and mobile support rather than massed charges. A few hundred or a thousand ninja can defend a border through rapid movement and communication 24 61.

Village ninja follow strict rules about missions and information. They do not normally disclose mission plans to outsiders or pry into another squad’s assignment, and leaving the village without authorization can make a ninja a rogue ninja 40 42.
