Background / History
Torifu served directly under the Second Hokage and accompanied him to peace talks with Kumogakure. He survived the Kinkaku and Ginkaku rebellion through the Second Hokage’s sacrifice and witnessed the Third Hokage’s succession. These experiences underpin his concern about the destructive power of tailed beasts and jinchūriki 3 15.
During the Third Shinobi World War, Torifu departed from his usual Ino-Shika-Cho team arrangement to lead less-established ninja. His aim was to develop soldiers who could survive demanding missions and eventually become the backbone of other squads. He acknowledged the risks of accelerating their growth through dangerous fieldwork, but considered it necessary given Konoha’s wartime condition 15.
Although he held no advisor title, Torifu occupied a high position within Konoha’s organization. The Third Hokage later recalled him to help reorganize village departments so that all could be commanded as a united wartime force 34 76.
Appearance
- Build: Stout, with a round face revealed when he removes his raincoat hood during the squad introductions 2 6.
- Field clothing: Wears a hooded raincoat during operations in the Land of Rain 2 5.
- Combat silhouette: His Expansion Jutsu enlarges both his body and iron staff; Super Expansion Jutsu makes him large enough to physically resist a Nine-Tails tail 19 53 54.
Personality
Torifu treats killing as a professional necessity rather than a personal pleasure. He refuses to kill neutral Kusagakure ninja simply to conceal his squad’s movements, instead choosing to subdue and release them while seeking a strategic benefit for Konoha 17 18.
His care for subordinates extends beyond combat. He prepares concealed shelters, hot soup, and dried meat, and never considers abandoning Yuzuru when the injured Genin becomes difficult to move. Yuzuru regards him as a sincere, warm-hearted man who embodies the Will of Fire 5 8 34.
Torifu combines compassion with demanding expectations. He believes difficult missions can cultivate capable ninja, praises initiative, and recognizes strength regardless of rank. Having known Konoha under the First and Second Hokage, he finds its diminished battlefield effectiveness difficult to accept 15 18.
Abilities & Skills
Expansion Jutsu
Torifu enlarges individual limbs or his entire body to increase the reach and force of physical attacks 6 19.
- Enlarges his right arm and palm to smash away the section of an outpost containing an Exploding Tag trap, shielding his squad from a point-blank blast 6.
- Reshapes surrounding terrain to disrupt pursuit and create an opportunity to retreat 8.
- Enlarges his iron staff alongside his body, allowing him to keep approaching enemies at a distance 19.
Super Expansion Jutsu
His dungeon counterpart uses an immense enlarged form to block the Nine-Tails’ tail and protect the ninja and villagers behind him 53 54.
- Buys time for other Konoha ninja to rescue people 53.
- Greatly reduces flexibility, leaving him unable to evade the Nine-Tails’ next strike 54.
- Does not provide enough durability to withstand the Nine-Tails’ physical force or the burns caused by close contact with its chakra 54.
Physical Combat and Staff Fighting
Torifu introduces physical strikes as his specialty. His straightforward staff attacks demonstrate the strength of a seasoned elite Jonin 2 4.
- Kills three charging ambushers with one staff strike each 4.
- Engages Gari directly and withstands an Explosion Release counterattack without injury 6.
- Knocks Gari away when the enemy is distracted, then immediately orders disengagement rather than prolonging the battle 8.
- Is better suited to frontal clashes than specialized infiltration or reconnaissance 8.
Command, Fieldcraft, and Intelligence Handling
Torifu plans routes, preserves his squad’s readiness, and takes precautions to ensure intelligence survives even if the team cannot return intact 3 5 6 12.
- Constructs a concealed dugout with smoke ducts routed through a tree trunk and canopy 5.
- Scouts a nearby battle personally and changes course to avoid poisonous mist and unrelated fighting 5.
- Makes separate copies of recovered intelligence for every squad member and sends another copy by saker falcon 6.
- Uses captured Kusagakure ninja to spread disinformation about Iwagakure’s invasion 17.
- Recognizes the political risks of Yuzuru using techniques belonging to particular clans or the Hokage’s lineage 34.
Yang Release Transformation
- Torifu has mastered Yang Release Transformation. Yuzuru fails to obtain it as a drop after killing his dungeon counterpart 54.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Black iron staff — His principal documented weapon; used for lethal strikes, defensive sweeps, and enlarged attacks 4 6 19.
- Smoke bombs — Conceal the battlefield during his squad’s retreat from Iwagakure ninja 8.
- Saker falcon and message tube — Provide an additional channel for sending recovered intelligence 6.
- Firewood, mess kit, and dried meat — Allow him to prepare warm meals in concealed shelters 5.
- Medicinal pills — Taken after he returns with severe wounds; the passage does not establish their exact properties 12.
Relationships
- Yuzuru — Subordinate and developing protégé. Torifu recognizes his unexpected combat ability, promotes him to Chunin, and later warns him about the questionable provenance of his techniques. In the dungeon, Yuzuru kills Torifu’s critically injured counterpart with Chidori 4 16 34 54.
- Kairi Omori — Special Jonin subordinate and reconnaissance support. She accompanies him to investigate the remaining outposts, helps him return while wounded, and bandages his injuries 2 8 12.
- Hazuki Uchiha — Chunin subordinate. Torifu employs her genjutsu for interrogation and considers her highly promising despite her impulsive battlefield behavior 4 15 34.
- Second Hokage — Former commander and trainer. His sacrifice allowed Torifu and the other surviving escorts to escape the Kinkaku and Ginkaku crisis 3 15 18.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Fellow survivor of the Second Hokage’s escort group and later Torifu’s Hokage. Torifu assists his departmental reorganization; the dungeon Third Hokage grieves upon seeing his corpse 15 55 76.
- Biwako Sarutobi — Treats his injuries at the frontline hospital and discusses jinchūriki threats and his squad’s potential with him 15.
- Shimura Danzō — Frontline commander to whom Torifu reports. Their relationship becomes openly antagonistic after Torifu’s work reorganizing village departments, which Yuzuru suspects included Root 12 76.
- Gari — Iwagakure Explosion Release opponent whom Torifu engages during the reconnaissance mission 6 8.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Restoring the Reconnaissance Channel
Torifu’s newly assembled squad—Kairi Omori, Hazuki Uchiha, and Yuzuru—is sent behind enemy lines to investigate the loss of Konoha’s reconnaissance channel to Iwagakure. After defeating Amegakure ambushers, they locate a destroyed outpost, recover intelligence, and trigger an explosive trap 2 3 4 5 6.
The squad subsequently encounters Iwagakure Jonin Gari and Doto. Torifu fights Gari while his teammates handle the other threats, then orders retreat as soon as an opening appears. With Yuzuru injured, he continues the investigation with Kairi while Hazuki remains behind to protect Yuzuru 6 8.
Torifu and Kairi complete the mission but return badly wounded after days of evading pursuers. Following a brief recovery, he leads the withdrawal through the Land of Birds and Land of Wind, eventually reporting that all three reconnaissance outposts have been wiped out 12.
The Spy-Bait Operation
After promoting Yuzuru to Chunin, Torifu leads another apparent reconnaissance mission that actually serves as bait to identify an Iwagakure spy. More than twenty enemy ninja ambush the squad near Kannabi Bridge, allowing Konoha’s intelligence network to confirm the suspect’s identity 16 18 19.
Torifu protects an injured Yuzuru during the fighting, refusing to dodge a Lava Release attack because doing so would expose him. The larger battle leaves Yuzuru missing; Torifu remains concerned and immediately offers his squad for a rendezvous when news of Yuzuru’s survival arrives 19 21 29.
Recall and Return
When Yuzuru returns, Torifu welcomes him and explains that an urgent recall to Konoha will temporarily disband their team. Before leaving, he advises Yuzuru on restricted techniques and lends him his private tent for medical studies 34.
Torifu later returns to the battlefield after assisting the Third Hokage with departmental reorganization. His vague explanation and subsequent argument with Danzō lead Yuzuru to infer that the work involved bringing Root under tighter Hokage control 76.
Nine-Tails’ Rampage Dungeon
Within the dungeon, Torifu blocks the Nine-Tails so other ninja can rescue civilians. A second tail strike throws him through buildings and Konoha’s outer wall, leaving him with shattered bones, damaged organs, massive bleeding, and chakra burns 53 54.
Yuzuru follows under the appearance of attempting a rescue, then kills the critically injured Torifu with Chidori to obtain experience and attribute gains. He subsequently carries the corpse to the Third Hokage, conceals the Chidori wound, and claims the Nine-Tails killed Torifu. This death concerns the dungeon counterpart, not the living Torifu in the main-world storyline 54 55 76.
