Background / History
Eight hundred years before Seven’s rebellion, Imu was one of the twenty kings who founded the World Government after their alliance destroyed the Great Kingdom. The Empty Throne supposedly represented their oath against any single monarch holding supreme authority, but Imu secretly occupied it. The Gorosei governed publicly while remaining subordinate to him 329 330.
Imu’s reign survived challenges from Joy Boy, Davy Jones, and numerous later rebels. He concealed the Void Century’s history and regarded the Poneglyphs, the D Clan, and the Nika Fruit as continuing threats to his rule 43 67 330 386. At God Valley, Imu watched events alongside Saint Saturn; his Black Turn Domination transformed Rocks into a demon before Roger and Garp defeated him and Saint Garin delivered the finishing blow 63 236.
Imu maintained bodies for use as possession vessels. After the World Government’s overthrow, Seven’s group discovered the Twenty Kings’ bodies preserved in cold storage beneath the ruined Mary Geoise 396.
Appearance
- Concealed appearance: Usually wears a black robe covering his entire body, leaving only his scarlet eyes visible 204.
- Voice: Sometimes male, sometimes female, and sometimes both voices layered together 142 160 387.
- Lunarian combat vessel: Revealed when his robe bursts apart during the battle with Seven. It has brown skin, white hair, black demonic wings, and two S-shaped horns, resembling an oversized King 390.
- Other vessels: Possesses a blue-haired maid to observe Seven at a banquet 386 387.
- Disembodied form: Becomes a mass of shadow after voluntarily leaving Harald’s body following his final defeat 463.
The Lunarian body’s exposure does not establish Imu’s original race. Seven interprets it as another vessel rather than necessarily Imu’s own body 390.
Personality
Imu rules through absolute control, treating the Gorosei and Divine Knights as self-aware puppets. He generally values results over methods and rarely leaves the Holy Land, allowing his subordinates to administer the world while he spends extended periods secluded in the Flower Room 141 274 298 384.
He can be pragmatic when dealing with exceptional strength. After the Gorosei provoke Seven, Imu criticizes their decision to attack a powerful, cooperative outsider who is not of the D Clan. Even after Seven rebels, he briefly offers to overlook the betrayal because Seven’s strength could help counter Joy Boy’s approaching prophecy 155 388.
His fascination with Seven is inseparable from his desire to possess him. Seven’s youth, appearance, immense potential, and Lunarian abilities make him an unusually desirable vessel 162 390. Once reconciliation fails, Imu is willing to destroy both his enemy and his own centuries-serving followers through mass sacrifice 394.
Abilities & Skills
Devil Contracts
Imu transfers demonic power through three contract tiers, exchanging supernatural abilities and status for increasing control over the recipient 128 311 387.
| Contract | Associated Position | Benefits | Control and Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shallow Sea | God’s Edge Blades | Teleportation 128 | Influence is range-limited. A recipient can escape by severing the marked arm 128 384. |
| Deep Sea | God’s Knights / Divine Knights | Immortality, superhuman power, and pentagram-based teleportation 311 | Imu can possess the recipient anywhere. Regeneration prevents escape through ordinary limb removal 311. |
| Abyss | Gorosei | Near-eternal life, immortality, enhanced power, and pentagram-based teleportation 128 311 | Intended to impose complete control; losing the contract also means losing its granted immortality and lifespan 388. |
- Limited core circle: Deep Sea and Abyss Contracts share a combined total of thirteen slots 387.
- Backlash: Creating or losing a contracted puppet costs Imu power. Somaz’s death through a Deep Sea Contract immediately injures him 298.
- Recovery time: The Gorosei estimate that recovering from Somaz’s death will take approximately another year 330.
- Seven’s exception: Universal Sealing Scrolls isolate the demonic power from Seven’s Shallow Sea Contract, preventing possession and control 395.
- Countermeasure: The Horse Talisman can break all three contract tiers 394.
Possession and Vessel Transfer
- Body occupation: Can inhabit other bodies and exercise his power through them, including a maid and Harald 386 393 394.
- Transferable will: Considers moving his will into another vessel when Seven prepares the ultimate Thoughtless Sword 393.
- Survival beyond bodily destruction: Losing his Lunarian vessel does not end him; he continues through Harald 393 394.
- Critical weakness: Universal Sealing Scrolls can imprison his will inside a vessel, interrupting his abilities and preventing transfer 395.
Black Turn Domination
Black Turn Domination transforms victims into demonic killing weapons under Imu’s control 330.
- Spreading effect: A dark vortex can infect nearby people and transform them in groups 330.
- Lifespan consumption: Victims burn through their remaining life at several times the normal rate; combat and self-healing accelerate that expenditure 330.
- Strategic use: Imu expects to turn Seven’s assembled allies into reinforcements for himself 389.
- Counters: Garp’s Pure Gold pendant prevents one attempted domination, while the Horse Talisman can remove its control 394.
Conqueror’s Haki and Combat
- Large-scale pressure: His clash of Conqueror’s Haki with Seven sweeps across Mary Geoise and outward toward the Grand Line, leaving the Holy Land’s ordinary inhabitants unconscious 388.
- High-quality Haki: Their nearly tangible red-black lightning affects even the Morning Star Crew, Gorosei, and Divine Knights 393.
- Close combat: Initially matches Seven closely enough that neither can quickly prevail through physique, physical techniques, or Devil Fruit abilities 389.
- Multiple abilities: Uses different Devil Fruit powers as black flame clouds containing scarlet eyes appear behind him. Their precise source remains unexplained 389.
- Endurance: Sustains a prolonged battle with Seven before the destruction of his vessel forces him to change tactics 390 393 394.
Living Sacrifice
- Activation: Creates enormous pentagram arrays above and below Mary Geoise, enclosing the battlefield like a cylindrical cage 394.
- Targets: Attempts to sacrifice everyone inside, including the Morning Star allies, Gorosei, and Divine Knights 394.
- Interruption: Seven seals Imu’s will within Harald, cutting off the array’s energy supply before the sacrifice is completed 395.
Nature of His Demonic Power
Seven initially theorizes that Imu failed a Zoan awakening and was overtaken by the fruit’s independent will. The system later manifests demonic power from Imu’s contract as the Human-Human Fruit, Mythical Zoan: Satan Form 276 295.
- This establishes a connection between Imu’s power and Satan Form, but not a confirmed identification of Imu’s own Devil Fruit 295 389.
- During their final battle, Seven explicitly questions whether Satan Form is merely one expression of a more fundamental Devil Fruit power 389.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Uranus — Ancient Weapon under Imu’s control, used to intimidate the Four Seas and support World Government rule 214 428.
- Long-handled great blade — Wielded against Seven during the battle at Mary Geoise 390.
- Preserved vessels — Maintains bodies for possession, including the founders’ bodies found in cold storage after his overthrow 396.
Relationships
- Seven / Beelzebul — Initially a recruitment prospect and coveted vessel. Imu grants him exceptional authority, then becomes his principal opponent when Seven rejects contract-bound submission 155 162 204 388.
- Gorosei — Public administrators of Imu’s hidden rule, controlled through Abyss Contracts. Their loyalty ends after he attempts to sacrifice them 329 394 404.
- Saint Saturn — Long-serving subordinate who watched God Valley with Imu and sought recognition as his second-in-command 141 142 236.
- Saint Elaine — Blood descendant. His repeated kidnappings force the Gorosei to seek Imu’s intervention 34 155 205.
- Harald — Shallow Sea signatory who joins Seven’s rebellion, then becomes Imu’s vessel during the decisive battle 128 393 395.
- Joy Boy — Ancient adversary whose legacy and prophecy continue to threaten Imu eight hundred years later 142 155 388.
- Nefertari D. Lily — Seven suspects Imu uses her body as a vessel. Imu’s startled response to Seven’s final remark about creating a world containing only Lily hints at a deeper attachment, without fully explaining it 354 463.
- Mihawk — Has an unspecified connection to Imu but rejects his philosophy of rule 463.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Elbaf’s National Treasure
Imu is initially pleased when Saturn presents what the Gorosei believe is Elbaf’s legendary Noah Ark Form. Recognizing it as the Ship-Ship Fruit, he concludes that Joy Boy has deceived him for eight hundred years and leaves in anger 141 142.
Recruitment of Seven
Following the Marineford crisis, Imu orders the Gorosei to meet Seven’s demands rather than continue fighting. He personally offers immortality and Celestial Dragon standing; Seven instead requests Buggy and Bullet’s release and a fight with Imu 155 159 160.
Seven’s displayed power convinces Imu that his body could be an extraordinary vessel. At their later meeting in the Flower Room, Imu refuses to reveal his face and settles on a Shallow Sea Contract, while granting Seven Divine Knight rights and status equivalent to the Gorosei 162 204.
Contract Backlash and the Abyss Offer
Somaz’s death exposes the cost of Imu’s contract network. Imu orders the Gorosei to appease Seven rather than risk losing another valuable recipient, then schedules an Abyss Contract after his recovery 298 330.
Before the ritual, he secretly possesses a maid to scrutinize Seven’s willingness to accept the contract. He proceeds despite failing to understand Seven’s intentions, trusting that the Abyss Contract will make escape impossible 386 387.
Battle of Mary Geoise
Seven accepts the Abyss Contract’s power without submitting to Imu’s control and openly rebels. Imu’s last attempt at reconciliation fails, and Seven’s allies arrive through spatial doors 388.
The duel reveals Imu’s Lunarian vessel and his determination to seize Seven’s body. Seven’s ultimate Thoughtless Sword destroys that vessel, but Imu continues through Harald and attempts a mass Living Sacrifice 390 393 394.
Seven uses thirty Universal Sealing Scrolls to trap Imu inside Harald, then imitates the Time-Time Fruit to send both seventeen years into the future. With Imu removed, the World Government’s remaining leaders surrender 395.
Return and Final Defeat
For Imu and Harald, the seventeen-year interval passes instantaneously. Seven, however, spends those years becoming vastly stronger. Upon returning, Imu concedes defeat, leaves Harald’s body, and is sealed away 463.
