Background
Garp was one of the defining Marine fighters of Roger's era: Roger regarded him as a troublesome rival, while Garp and Roger maintained a relationship of mutual respect despite repeatedly clashing. Garp escorted Roger to his execution at Loguetown and had previously refused Roger's invitation to join the Roger Pirates. 3
At God Valley, Garp fought beside Roger against the demon-transformed Rocks. Their combined Conqueror's Haki-coated attacks, including Garp's Infinite Fist Bone, were needed to defeat Rocks. The incident also exposed Garp to the Celestial Dragons' brutality and the existence of the ruler above the Five Elders. 156 64
Rather than pursue promotion, Garp remained a Vice Admiral because he refused to let his sense of justice become subordinate to the Celestial Dragons. He stayed in the Marines to protect its personnel and, initially, to personally arrest Roger. 64 376
After Roger's death, Barzeb Seven brought the pregnant Portgas D. Rouge to Garp's home in Foosha Village. Garp accepted responsibility for Rouge and Ace while keeping Ace's parentage concealed. 20 He later raised Ace and took custody of Luffy, with both children living under Rouge's care in Foosha Village before being moved to Inazuma for safety. 278 279 300
Appearance
Garp is a 1.9-meter-tall Marine with a powerful physique and a habitually casual bearing despite his overwhelming presence. During his prime at fifty-six, most of his hair remained black, with only a few gray strands at his temples. 61 279
- Usually wears a white Marine justice cape. 150
- Has black hair that becomes increasingly gray over time. 61 301
- Fights bare-handed, relying on his iron fists rather than weapons. 3 301
- Commands a distinctive Dog-Head Warship. 60 61
Personality
Garp is straightforward, irreverent, and battle-hungry. He disregards orders when he believes they conflict with his priorities, such as abandoning Sengoku's recall order to pursue the Morning Star Pirates. 60 He is also willing to mock, intimidate, or physically discipline others without ceremony—including stuffing Blackbeard's mouth with unwashed socks after capturing him. 336
Behind his blunt manner, Garp is perceptive and calculating. He immediately recognized Seven's attempt to buy time during their confrontation, yet allowed it because Seven had already fought Mihawk for days and Garp refused to exploit that exhaustion. 61 He also saw Seven as a possible long-term protector for Ace and deliberately entrusted him with a record of his lifetime training experience. 62 67
Garp's central loyalty is to the Marines rather than the World Government. His contempt for the Celestial Dragons and Imu stems from God Valley, while his concern for ordinary Marines repeatedly drives him to train recruits, oppose governmental interference, and consider a new, more just Navy. 64 150 211
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Endurance
Garp's raw physical strength is regarded as one of the greatest on the sea. He trained by pulverizing eight mountains with his bare fists, then flattened Chinjao's formerly pointed head with a punch. 20
- Can shatter an island into pieces with Fist Bone: Impact. 61
- Destroyed Blackbeard's warship with a single Fist Bone: Galaxy Impact. 334

Conqueror's Haki
Garp is one of the few Marine high-command officers known to possess Conqueror's Haki. 35

- His experience enabled Seven to rapidly master Fish-Man Karate. 218
Infinite Fist Bone
Infinite Fist Bone is Garp's high-level barrage technique, creating countless Haki-coated fist afterimages.
- Used as one of the decisive attacks against Rocks at God Valley. 156 158
- Employed against Seven's Conqueror's Haki defense at Marineford. 158
- Its effectiveness depends on overpowering the target's Conqueror's Haki defense with greater Haki. 156

Story Role / Major Arcs
Pursuit of the Morning Star Pirates
After learning the Morning Star Pirates' location, Garp ignored orders to return to Marineford and redirected his Dog-Head Warship to pursue them. 60 He confronted Seven on a deserted island, accepted a one-move duel, and countered Seven's Thoughtless Sword with Infinite Fist Bone. The resulting clash destroyed the island, but Seven escaped. 61 62
Garp acknowledged that Seven was stronger than Roger had been in his youth and used the injury Seven inflicted on him to convince Sengoku that the Marines needed stronger younger recruits. 62 64
Marineford Battle
Garp helped test Marine recruits for resistance to Conqueror's Haki before the battle, knocking out each thousand-man group with ease. 150 During the battle, Seven's Conqueror's Haki incapacitated nearly all Marineford personnel, leaving Garp among the few still standing. 155
Following the deaths of fifty thousand Marines, Garp attacked Seven with Infinite Fist Bone in an attempt to break Seven's Conqueror's Haki defense. 158 He and Sengoku ultimately failed to overcome the Morning Star Pirates' recovery capabilities and advanced Haki defenses. 161
Marine Reform and World Conscription
Following Marineford's destruction, Garp participated in global recruitment efforts and took an immediate interest in Enel as a prospective Marine. 183 He also volunteered to bring talented recruits to Zephyr's training camp. 185
As distrust of the World Government grew, Garp considered creating a new Navy with Zephyr and later worked with Sengoku to reposition Marine branches and cultivate independent Marine strength. 211 376
Capture of Blackbeard
Garp intercepted Blackbeard in the East Blue, used Fist Bone: Galaxy Impact to destroy his ship, and pursued him underwater until he was captured near the Calm Belt. 334 He handed Blackbeard over to Bogard and secretly informed Seven of the imprisonment. 334 336
Conflict with the World Government
Garp coordinated with Sengoku and Dragon to deploy Navy and Revolutionary Army forces across the Four Seas, preventing the World Government from suppressing rebellions or collecting Celestial Gold. 385 When Seven moved against Mary Geoise, Garp rushed to join the conflict and helped restrain Imu with a combined Conqueror's Haki assault. 391 393
