Background / History
Wu Zhou, an emergency surgeon from modern Earth, transmigrates into the body of Gret Nordmark, a young City Guard recruit. Gret’s original body had been cared for by Captain Karen after his father died in battle; his father had been a City Guard lieutenant captain. 5 6 27
Immediately after arriving, Gret performs emergency abdominal surgery on the injured Karen with improvised tools. He later manifests a Healing Spell, using the claim of a Nature God “Divine Revelation” to explain his otherwise inexplicable skills. 5 6
Gret is drawn into a Temple Guard search operation, where he survives an attack in an ancient tower and encounters Necromancer Andrew Lynn. His forensic knowledge—particularly his identification of a Golden Skeleton as female—earns Lynn’s interest and begins a mutually respectful association. 18 20 21 23
Lynn attempts to recruit Gret into Necromancy, but Gret insists that he wants to study Elemental Magic. After Gret refuses to use surgery as torture, Lynn respects his principles, provides basic alchemical equipment, and writes a recommendation to the Mage Tower. 24 25 26
At the Mage Tower, Gret is allowed to audit classes under Magister German’s supervision. Unable to read Magic Script, he creates a personal dictionary, copies texts, and uses a temporary Comprehend Languages spell to memorize the foundations of meditation. 26 40 49
Personality
Gret is compassionate, pragmatic, and strongly guided by medical ethics. He prioritizes saving lives even when threatened, falsely accused, or dealing with people hostile to him. He refuses to use medical knowledge to harm anyone, declaring that he would fight an enemy directly but never weaponize medicine. 10 22 24 25
He is also observant and intellectually curious. His medical training makes him notice anatomical details, injuries, sanitation risks, and the potential of technologies such as lenses for medical observation. 20 21 32 50
Despite frequently feeling unprepared in his new world, Gret adapts quickly. He uses excuses such as a headache to conceal incomplete memories, accepts extraordinary phenomena once he understands them, and actively seeks ways to learn magic and improve his circumstances. 8 22 40 50
Appearance
Gret is a teenage boy with black hair and black eyes. He initially wears the rough, inexpensive clothing of a low-ranking City Guard recruit. 31 32
- Often addressed as “Little Gret” or “Little Grete.” 5 8
- Wears a translucent, pale-green, leaf-shaped pendant on a waxed linen cord; it was part of the original body’s possessions from childhood. 18
- Later receives altered new clothes from Auntie Irene, originally made for Raymond’s Midsummer Festival outfit. 37
Abilities & Skills
Emergency Medicine and Surgery
Gret retains Wu Zhou’s modern emergency-surgery knowledge and can apply it with primitive local tools.
- Performs abdominal surgery on Captain Karen and stabilizes him. 5 6
- Conducts an emergency cricothyrotomy for a child with laryngeal obstruction and prevents a priest from sealing the life-saving airway with magic. 10 11
- Identifies and treats critical injuries, including tension pneumothorax. 27 28 29
- Demonstrates tendon-suturing surgery on a sheep for Andrew Lynn. 25
- Teaches battlefield first aid, emphasizing rapid control of bleeding, cardiac arrest, and airway obstruction. 30
Healing Spell
Gret can cast healing magic, although he initially has little understanding or control over it.
- First manifests the spell while treating Captain Karen, forcing him to remove sutures before the wound closes completely. 6
- Uses medical visualization to guide healing of Karen’s abdominal injuries. 17
- Heals a boy with allergies and later treats Eliot’s ankle sprain. 18 39
- Recognizes that magical healing can be dangerous when applied without understanding the underlying injury; external healing leaves Roman’s internally damaged thumb permanently impaired. 22 32 33
Forensic Medicine and Anatomy
Gret’s anatomical expertise is valuable even to necromancers.
- Notices that a skeleton’s head and body originate from different people. 20
- Identifies Andrew Lynn’s Golden Skeleton as female through forensic examination. 21
- Uses tooth wear on the Golden Skeleton’s skull to demonstrate age estimation. 23
- Improves his meditative self-image by reconstructing the human body from detailed anatomical knowledge. 50
Magical Study
Gret pursues Elemental Magic through the Mage Tower rather than joining Necromancy.
