History

Konoha suffered an assault by Sand and Sound ninja during the Chunin exam. Third Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi died in the conflict, leaving the village temporarily without a leader; Tsunade later returned to become the Fifth Hokage 65 88 120.

After that war, Cloud Village used the death of one of its ninja to demand that Konoha hand over Hinata Hyuga. Feng An and Hyuga Hiashi confronted the village advisors over the demand and the Hyuga clan's earlier treatment. Feng An publicly recounted both incidents, and advisor Utatane Koharu acknowledged that the leadership's decisions had been wrong 93 108 109.

Konoha subsequently faced attacks involving Iwagakure and Akatsuki. Feng An and Hinata devastated an advancing force outside the village, leaving Konoha with minimal damage; Pain then attempted to pull the village apart with Planetary Devastation 328 330 332. A later allied assault brought reanimated ninja and a larger force to Konoha, where Feng An used Wood Clones and large-scale Wood Release against them 391 392 393.

A later catastrophe involving the Ten-Tails and Ōtsutsuki Shibai caused immense losses. During reconstruction, Tsunade warned that the weakened village could become vulnerable to another attack 626. When Grass Village forces tried to exploit that weakness, Konoha deployed a large-scale combination ninjutsu that decimated them 635.

Governance and Defenses

• Hokage: Tsunade serves as the Fifth Hokage. She commands village responses to external threats and directs reconstruction 120 162 626.
• Clan representation: Following the confrontation over Hinata, the Hyuga clan gained a place in important village meetings and decisions 125.
• Anbu and surveillance: Anbu carry out Hokage orders. During the Grass Village attack, underground monitors displayed the situation outside Konoha 319 635.
• Research: Konoha maintains a research facility where Katasuke Tono and Orochimaru work; Feng An brought them a recovered Regeneration Core for study 475.
• Sensory defenses: After Izumo was severely injured, Tsunade ordered the sensory division reorganized to strengthen the village's defenses 138.

Relations with Other Villages

• Sunagakure — An ally under Fifth Kazekage Gaara; Tsunade argued that abandoning it during an Akatsuki threat would damage Konoha's credibility as an ally 218.
• Cloud Village — Pressured Konoha over the deaths of Cloud ninja and later attacked it. The conflict included Feng An's killing of the Fourth Raikage 88 93 106 185.
• Iwagakure — Its forces joined attacks on Konoha, including the advance repelled by Feng An and Hinata and a later assault involving reanimated ninja 325 330 391.
