First Appearance Chapter 11

Background / History

Kakashi is the son of Hatake Sakumo, Konoha’s White Fang. Sakumo’s public disgrace and subsequent suicide continue to weigh heavily on him; Kakashi reacts strongly to any suggestion that a mission may be abandoned, questioning who would bear responsibility for the village’s losses. 11 56

Having graduated early, Kakashi was previously placed on two teams whose other members both left, resulting in his assignment to a new squad with former classmates. He is initially dissatisfied at being “downgraded” into the Fifth Squad. 50

He becomes a member of the Fifth Squad alongside Uchiha Chi and Yūhi Kurenai, under Tsunade’s instruction. Although wary of Chi’s erratic behavior, he increasingly works with his teammates and comes to regard Chi as reliable in missions. 52 115 118

Appearance

Kakashi is a white-haired young shinobi who wears a mask and carries a short sword at his waist, an appearance that immediately recalls his father, the White Fang. 11

  • White hair.
  • Masked face.
  • Carries a short sword / chakra dagger inherited from his father. 11 56
  • Often described as having an impassive or “dead fish-eyed” expression. 11 31

Personality

Kakashi is stoic, mission-focused, and intensely dedicated to training. He prefers to avoid distractions outside training and missions, and his bluntness frequently exposes a lack of emotional tact. 11 59

His father’s fate has made him rigid about mission responsibility. When Chi proposes abandoning a mission, Kakashi immediately objects, viewing such a choice through the unresolved question of why Sakumo was condemned. 56

Despite his detached manner, Kakashi is resilient and cares about his squad. He endures a two-on-one beating rather than hold the Fifth Squad back, hides a bleeding wound so Tsunade will not be affected by it, and continues pushing himself to improve when faced with Chi’s strength. 86 112 115

Story Role / Major Arcs

Early Encounters with Uchiha Chi

Kakashi first encounters Chi after Chi falsely claims they have arranged to train together. Chi then reveals that he detected Kakashi secretly observing him, leaving Kakashi confused over how his stealth was exposed. 11

After witnessing Chi’s speed, Kakashi questions Sakumo’s earlier assessment that Chi had ordinary talent. His curiosity leads him to accept Chi’s challenge at the Naka River, where Chi defeats him with a punch, substitution, transformation, and the “Thousand Years of Knees.” 31 35 36

Fifth Squad Formation and Training

Kakashi joins Chi and Kurenai in the Fifth Squad under Tsunade. He worries that Chi’s unpredictability will endanger missions and is skeptical of Tsunade’s unconventional approach to instruction. 52 54 68

During Tsunade’s bell test, he contributes the rumor of her hemophobia, but clashes with Chi over whether exploiting a village shinobi’s trauma is acceptable. 58 59

Rivalry and Escalating Training

Kakashi becomes increasingly determined to surpass Chi, training from early morning and eventually sleeping only three hours per day. Even so, he remains unable to match Chi’s speed, strength, or resilience. 86 112

His anger is deliberately provoked when Chi steps on his copy of Icha Icha Paradise. Kakashi attacks with kunai and his chakra dagger, but Chi evades his attacks and breaks the dagger. 85

Land of Fire Border Mission

On the Fifth Squad’s first mission outside Konoha, Kakashi is separated during a building collapse and survives a fierce battle, eventually being found embedded in a wall. 114

He is then overwhelmed by a Jonin and a Chunin but refuses to give up because he does not want to burden the squad. After Tsunade reallocates the enemies, Kakashi is assigned to restrain the remaining Chunin despite his injuries. 115

Trivia

  • He considers Chi an “absolute oddball” and repeatedly struggles to understand his thought process. 11 68
  • Kakashi dislikes tempura. 102
  • He is especially protective of his autographed copy of Icha Icha Paradise. 85 86
