For the next five days, Watanabe stayed cooped up at home, racing against time to cultivate his Ninjutsu and prepare for the upcoming battle.
On April 3rd, Konoha Year 16, the highly anticipated graduation exam finally arrived. Watanabe emerged from his seclusion and left his home on this day.
Upon arriving at the school, the entrance was already packed with people, parents cheering on their children, creating an extremely boisterous atmosphere.
"Watanabe, you're here too!"
Jiraiya greeted him with a cheerful smile.
"Yeah, good morning."
"Where's Tsunade? I don't see her."
"She's already become Hiruzen's disciple, so she doesn't need to take the graduation exam," Watanabe replied.
Jiraiya suddenly understood. "So that's how it is. As expected of Tsunade, her special treatment is truly enviable!"
"Her strength alone deserves that treatment," Watanabe affirmed. Even excluding her background, Tsunade was the most outstanding student in the entire school based on her own raw power.
"That's true," Jiraiya mused, recalling past memories of being beaten by Tsunade. "Tsunade is truly terrifying. One punch can leave someone half-paralyzed..."
"So, you're aiming to be taken in as a disciple by the Hokage this time, right?"
"Yes."
"Although the chances are a bit slim, I still wish you luck."
Jiraiya genuinely didn't think Watanabe had a chance of being taken in by the Hokage. While his ability to pursue Tsunade showed he had something special, his current skill level was truly worrying.
"Thanks, you too."
Watanabe was already prepared to make a stunning debut and didn't explain further to Jiraiya.
"Haha, I'll pass. As long as I can graduate, becoming a Hokage's disciple is something I wouldn't even dare to dream of..."
"Examinees, please enter in an orderly fashion!"
A Teacher's voice commanded from a distance. Watanabe and Jiraiya ended their conversation and followed the crowd into the school.
Today's exam was only a written test. Watanabe found his assigned classroom based on his admission ticket, and the proctor was surprisingly familiar.
"Senior Sakumo!"
Other examinees also recognized the proctor and expressed their surprise.
"Are you proctoring for us this time?"
"Senior Sakumo has gotten so impressive!"
The silver-haired youth cautioned, "The examination hall needs to be quiet. Please refrain from talking."
Everyone obediently complied, but their gazes were filled with admiration and longing.
It seems Hatake Sakumo has been doing quite well since graduating these past few years. He is a genius, after all, Watanabe thought.
Hatake Sakumo was only three years his senior and had been a highly regarded figure in the school. It was said that he had joined the Anbu immediately after graduation three years ago. Today, he was likely specially assigned to proctor.
As Hatake Sakumo distributed the test papers, the written exam officially began.
Watanabe focused on his answers. The test content wasn't actually difficult, covering only basic knowledge, and was far easier than the math, physics, and chemistry from his previous life.
[What kind of existence do you think a Hokage is?]
[If your client and a companion fall into the water, who would you save first?]
[Write an argumentative essay of no less than eight hundred characters on the topic of 'Will of Fire'.]
The questions became more challenging towards the end. Watanabe answered them in a standard manner.
Ninja's duty was to execute missions; for ninja, missions were paramount. However, Watanabe felt that compared to his companions, the so-called missions were not worth mentioning.
Perhaps it was because Tsunade was his only companion, but he couldn't think of anything more important than her.
The written exam results wouldn't be out until the evening. Leaving the examination hall, Watanabe had intended to go home and cultivate, but unexpectedly, he ran into Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Hiruzen at the school gate.
"Watanabe, are you free this afternoon?" Jiraiya asked.
Watanabe thought he needed help with something and nodded, "I'm free."
"Perfect, then let's go to the hot springs together. We've been classmates for so many years, and the four of us have never hung out before," Jiraiya invited with a bright smile.
Not to help, but to hang out...
Looking at Orochimaru and Hiruzen beside him, Watanabe hesitated before agreeing. He decided to treat it as one last memory for his school life.
Speaking of which, Watanabe and Jiraiya were somewhat in the same boat. All four were from common backgrounds, especially Watanabe and Jiraiya, who were the only two orphans in their class.
"How did your written tests go this morning?"
On the way to the hot spring inn, Hiruzen couldn't contain himself and wanted to compare answers with the others.
"Who knows? I just scribbled some answers. Hope I pass," Jiraiya said nonchalantly.
Orochimaru replied rationally, "I did alright."
Watanabe: "I did alright too."
Hiruzen: "There's a question later that says if the client and a companion fall into the water..."
"Relax when you should relax, don't talk about this, it'll ruin the mood." Jiraiya interrupted him, enthusiastically suggesting, "Later, we absolutely have to go to the mixed-gender bathhouse. There will be many young ladies there, completely defenseless against guys our age!"
Hiruzen wanted to say more but stopped. Watanabe could tell that, unlike Jiraiya, he was genuinely concerned about their grades.
"No mixed baths," Orochimaru shook his head. "Just thinking about it makes me uncomfortable."
Jiraiya looked puzzled. Mixed baths with young ladies made him uncomfortable? Orochimaru really was a weirdo.
"Watanabe, Hiruzen, what do you guys think?"
"Let's go to the men's bath," Hiruzen said, looking at Watanabe. "After all, Watanabe already has Tsunade. It wouldn't be good for him if Tsunade found out."
He's actually looking out for me.
Watanabe was a little surprised.
"That's true, Tsunade getting angry is no joke."
Jiraiya thought for a moment, decisively giving up on the idea of taking Watanabe to the mixed bath. He changed the subject, "Watanabe, how did you manage to win Tsunade over? Teach me, I'll even become your disciple!"
Watanabe was speechless. So you think I'm some kind of Casanova?
He understood that Jiraiya's intentions weren't bad, it was just his nature that made him a tiny bit more lecherous than the average person.
"Tsunade and I just naturally got together. I can't teach you."
"Is that so..."
Jiraiya was deeply regretful. He really wanted to learn a few tricks from Watanabe so he could also try to hook up with some rich ladies and experience being taken care of. Konoha had more than just Tsunade among its young ladies; there was also Hyuga Rei in the next class.
Chatting idly as they walked, the four soon arrived at the hot spring inn. Everyone was short on cash, so there was no question of anyone treating. They all bought their own tickets.
When they were undressing in the bathing area, Jiraiya sneakily glanced at Watanabe's lower half and was instantly dumbfounded.
"Good heavens!"
He exclaimed, "No wonder you could win Tsunade over. Watanabe, you truly are exceptionally gifted!"
Orochimaru and Hiruzen followed the commotion and looked over, both showing expressions of astonishment.
"Maybe it's because I've been staying up too late."
Watanabe understood what was going on.
"Staying up late has that kind of effect...?"
Jiraiya and the other two's eyes flickered.
"Don't try to imitate me. Staying up late will make you weak in the kidneys!"
Watanabe worried about leading them astray and quickly corrected them.
