Background / History

Guardian of Tsunade

Mito raised Tsunade and chose to let her remain in the Ninja Academy rather than become Hiruzen Sarutobi's personal disciple prematurely. She taught Tsunade at home and wanted her granddaughter to have a comparatively carefree childhood despite her Senju lineage and expected future responsibilities 6.

Her standing in Konoha was formidable: Hiruzen did not dare override her objections, and Danzo accepted that Root might be disbanded if she demanded it 6 12. When Root targeted Watanabe, Mito intervened personally, ensured that he could continue studying at the Academy, and treated the incident as evidence of dangerous corruption among Konoha's higher ranks 11.

Support for Watanabe

Mito came to approve of Watanabe because of both his character and his resilience. After he offered to become the Nine-Tails' Jinchuriki in Tsunade's place, she considered him a viable candidate due to his extraordinary physique and self-healing ability 44 45.

She later entrusted him with the planned transfer of the Nine-Tails, citing Tsunade's trust in him and his suitability as a vessel. Mito also intended to support his advancement through the Anbu and believed he could potentially become Hokage, though Watanabe preferred Tsunade to inherit that position 144 145.

Land of Whirlpools Crisis

After Hanzō's ambush left Chiri, Watanabe, Uzumaki Tano, and Kushina missing, Mito led Anbu personnel toward the Land of Whirlpools. She prioritized stabilizing the country because both its Daimyo and heir had been taken, while also searching for the missing group 91.

Mito regarded Chiri's survival as essential to Konoha's stability. Chiri was a leading member of the Uchiha conciliatory faction and the likely next clan head; her death could have triggered a destructive succession struggle between the conciliatory and defecting factions 91. In gratitude for Chiri's role in protecting Tano and Kushina, Mito agreed to teach her the Uzumaki Clan's Yin Seal 92 93.

Conflict with Madara Uchiha

When Madara returned to Konoha, Mito revealed to Tsunade that he had survived his battle with Hashirama. Though her body was failing, she prepared to use Uzumaki secret techniques to restore herself temporarily and die alongside Madara if necessary 168.

Madara forcibly summoned the Nine-Tails from within Mito, leaving her unable to safely wield its chakra and accelerating her decline 173. She nevertheless continued fighting, restraining the Nine-Tails with Adamantine Sealing Chains and attempting to use the Reaper Death Seal on Madara 174 191.

Mito accepted that the Nine-Tails' extraction would kill her and comforted Tsunade by explaining that her body had already been nearing its limit. Her funeral was held after the battle 192 212.

Residual Spiritual Body

Mito left a spiritual body within Tsunade's sealing space as a final safeguard against the Nine-Tails' escape. It appeared when Tsunade attempted to alter the seal, warned her about the danger of fusing with the Nine-Tails' chakra, and expressed pride in Tsunade and Watanabe before dissipating 222 224.

Appearance

Mito retained the appearance and figure of a young woman despite her true age, aided by the Yin Seal. Her physical condition nevertheless deteriorated over time, and her red hair turned white after the Nine-Tails was extracted 12 144 186.

Personality

Mito was principled and protective of Konoha's people. She intervened against Root not merely because of Tsunade's connection to Watanabe, but because she refused to allow Konoha's residents to be subjected to injustice by powerful institutions 11.

She was politically perceptive and pragmatic. Mito recognized Hiruzen's strengths and flaws, understood the danger of the Uchiha–Konoha divide, and supported Chiri because Chiri's leadership offered the best chance of preventing the Uchiha Clan's internal conflict from destabilizing the village 43 91 146.

Her affection for Tsunade guided many of her decisions, but she could be stern when necessary. She restrained Tsunade with sealing chains for attacking Watanabe, while also planning for Tsunade's future, Watanabe's advancement, and the Senju Clan's succession 145 147. Even while dying, she remained composed and sought to ease Tsunade's grief 192.
