The Windships pressed on, breaking through the enemy's coastal defenses. Under alternating bombardment from the Cannons on both sides, not a patch of beach remained where anyone could stand. By the time the fleet reached the island, the ground was strewn with the corpses of mutated Demons and shattered machine parts.
Six large ships remained aloft to maintain air superiority, while the rest began a slow descent.
The Allied Forces were clearly preparing to land. Their ground troops would seize a beachhead and establish a foothold across the sea.
"Are they planning to contest the skies with hot-air balloons?" Lin Qing scoffed as she watched a great mass of red-cross balloons drift toward them. "They're sitting ducks."
If Windships belonged to another age of technology, hot-air balloons were still stuck in the old one. They might have been a slight improvement over the days of soldiers lining up to shoot one another, but they were no match for flying warships bolstered by spells. They could scarcely fly except with the natural wind, moved at a pitiful speed, and their gondolas hardly looked bulletproof.
But Lin Qing soon realized she had it wrong.
Once the balloons rose slightly above the fleet, their passengers leaped straight out of the gondolas! More precisely, two people and one Monster leaped from each.
The Monsters resembled manta rays, with broad, flat bodies and two fleshy wings like palm-leaf fans. Spread wide, those wings measured four or five meters across, allowing them to glide through the air. The two people on each Monster's back were unmistakably British army soldiers. One steered the Manta Demon while the other manned a multi-barreled revolving gun mounted on its back, and together they came charging toward the Windships.
"You can do that!?" Lin Qing stared in shock.
The balloons were
