He really did intend to ram the fence.
But while the other players used the front of their cars to crash into the fence, Gu Mian used the side of his vehicle—the passenger side.
Chu Changge clung on and spoke gloomily. "Are you planning to flatten the zombies on my side into little pancakes?"
Gu Mian did not hesitate. "Once we flatten them into little pancakes, your side can drive right along the fence. That way, they won't be able to pounce over."
Though this might cause a little damage to the car...
Chu Changge's voice came through. "I think you should ask the car how it feels first."
As he spoke, the right front of the shabby van had already made contact with the fence.
"Scraaaape—"
An ear-piercing screech instantly echoed through the entire hospital.
Gu Mian recognized that sound. He had heard it during that twenty-eight-car pileup years ago. It was the sound of a car door being twisted out of shape.
The players in the nearby building leaned out of the windows, craning their necks as they happily watched the scene below.
Sure enough, the driver was an expert. He forced the body of the vehicle against the indestructible fence and began scraping along it.
The zombies clinging to the passenger side were crushed like dry twigs, smeared across that stretch of fence like toothpaste being squeezed from a tube.
Even the passenger door was warped by the friction, hanging on by a thread.
The players watching from the building involuntarily swallowed.
"Th-that driver... which master is he? I didn't even know zombies could die like that..."
"Is he trying to circle the hospital again? This is already the third lap, isn't it?"
"Could it be because of the mission... Wait, look at the fence. Is it about to break?"
Gu Mian was still scraping away enthusiastically when a crisp snapping sound suddenly came from beside the battered vehicle.
Chu Changge had clearly heard it too. He quickly looked up toward where the sound had come from.
The fence, which had been incredibly sturdy and had wrecked the fronts of more than a dozen cars, had actually been ground apart by this junker.
"What's going on?" Gu Mian froze for a moment.
Wasn't this fence supposed to be tough? Wasn't it the dungeon's barrier? How could it break?
The fence around the hospital formed one continuous whole. If one spot broke, the entire ring would collapse like dominoes.
And Gu Mian was still driving a van as a battering ram. Wherever the battered vehicle went, fence rails flew everywhere.
The fence that had been standing there perfectly well was dragged up by the speeding vehicle and flung wildly through the air.
The players upstairs nearly had their eyes pop out of their heads.
"Holy shit, the fence can be wrecked? The dungeon shouldn't allow that, should it?"
Ordinary players could never hope to do anything to it, but Gu Mian was no ordinary player.
By now, the passenger door had been completely torn off. Freezing wind howled into the vehicle, and broken fence rails occasionally stabbed inside, only for Chu Changge to kick them back out.
"Stop wondering why those rails are so fragile. When have you ever shown up without some perfectly normal machine suddenly malfunctioning?" Chu Changge shouted over the howling wind.
That was true.
Back in high school, Gu Mian's entire class had gone out for a gathering at an amusement park. The roller coaster suddenly stopped while they were riding it, leaving the whole class dangling at the highest point for half an hour.
After that, no one ever voluntarily suggested bringing Gu Mian along to a gathering again.
So it was hardly strange for the hospital fence to go on strike after seeing him.
As Gu Mian thought this, he stomped harder on the accelerator. "Chu Changge, hang in there! We only have half a lap left!"
"I can hang in there." Chu Changge looked at the mangled fence outside. "But whether this car can hang in there is another matter."
The passenger side was nearly ruined from the violent friction.
Broken fence rails would occasionally jab in through the windshield, almost smashing straight into Gu Mian's face.
It was already remarkable that this junker had lasted this long.
The cold wind howled.
The once-neat fence no longer existed, reduced to a heap of twisted scrap metal.
The hospital's perimeter looked desolate.
The other players watched a battered vehicle uproot the barrier that had once seemed impossible to breach, and their hearts turned even colder than the wind.
"Could that driver be some kind of closed-beta player...?"
Otherwise, how could he be insane enough to ram a barrier that was supposed to be impossible to break?
"Please don't let him be an NPC that gives missions. I wouldn't dare accept a mission from an NPC like that. Better to keep my head down."
"It's fine. There are only about thirty minutes left until the three hours are up. We can leave then. I wonder if that car will make another lap..."
Soon, the battered vehicle that had smashed the fence to pieces howled out of the players' sight.
As far as the eye could see, there were ruined fences everywhere, while the shriek of the junker filled their ears.
Gu Mian was still inside, flooring the accelerator.
Some sections of the fence struck the windshield, smashing the intact glass into a web of fine cracks until it looked like frosted glass.
He could barely see the road ahead, so he could only keep moving along the fence.
The zombies gleefully chasing behind them had not decreased at all. There were even more of them now.
Gu Mian had a headache. "There's probably only one short intact stretch of fence left ahead. Once we send that section flying too, the mission should be more or less complete."
Chu Changge wrapped his coat more tightly around himself. "I seem to recall that my mission wasn't to knock down the hospital's outer fence."
"...Close enough."
The junker roared in the frigid wind.
Like a crazed beast, it sped tight against the fence, leaving chaos in its wake.
The players who had witnessed this vehicle were all stunned. You could pull off something like this in a dungeon?
Some even wanted to try driving out themselves, but when they saw the zombies outside, they promptly stopped in their tracks.
Actually trying it was out of the question.
But they could still enjoy the spectacle.
The players upstairs were boiling with excitement as they watched the final intact section of fence about to be demolished by the junker.
But just then, something ruined the mood. Panels suddenly popped up before every player.
There were still more than twenty minutes before the dungeon ended. These panels should not have appeared yet.
Everyone looked at the panels in confusion.
They saw—
[Warning! Warning! Red-Level Warning!] [Zombie Hospital dungeon has suffered massive damage! Due to unknown causes, the dungeon barrier has sustained epic-level destruction!] [Data analysis failed!] [Information retrieval error!] [Warning! The dungeon is about to collapse!] [All players within this dungeon will be forcibly teleported out in ten seconds. Please take note!] [10, 9, 8...]
Holy shit?
Gu Mian was still flooring the accelerator when he suddenly saw the panel that had popped up.
He felt a little guilty. "The dungeon collapsing shouldn't have anything to do with me, right...?"
Chu Changge glanced at the almost completely ruined fence.
"You know the answer yourself. I'm guessing the Evolution Game already knew it would die in your hands, which is why it's been targeting you so much."
So should I praise the game for recognizing talent?
As Gu Mian thought this, he pressed the accelerator down even harder. "There's only a little bit left. Ten seconds is enough for us to finish the mission."
What an outstanding player. Even with the dungeon collapsing, he still did not forget to seize the time and complete the mission.
In the final five seconds, Gu Mian made one last push and sent the remaining short stretch of fence flying. At the same time, both of their missions were completed.
