Background / History

Chu Changge and Gu Mian both came from Qidian Orphanage. He was known as a law student whose reserved manner, poker face, and solitary disposition made him appear almost incapable of reacting emotionally. 8

He later revealed that he had been raised from birth in a laboratory among other children kept in containers. Adults tested and recorded the children; Chu Changge was singled out for exceptional intelligence and memory as part of an experiment intended to create a particular person. After leaving the laboratory, he was sent to locate the person depicted in a photograph. He initially believed that person was Gu Mian, then admitted he may have found the wrong individual. 469

Chu Changge can recognize the Second World as his home world by instinct. 668

Gu Mian considers him more adept at deceiving others than himself: Chu Changge can arrange events so that people do not realize they have been manipulated until it is too late. 457 His view of people can be unnervingly utilitarian; Gu Mian observes that Chu Changge treats people as valuable objects that may be used or discarded when necessary. 463

Despite this detachment, he repeatedly acts to protect or assist Gu Mian and the group, including organizing searches for Gu Mian and warning him of danger. 415 565
