Background / History
Origin
Following Pangu's death after opening Heaven and Earth, three streams of pure qi and twelve streams of turbid qi remained. The pure qi became the Three Pure Ones, while the turbid qi gained access to Pangu Hall—formed from Pangu's Heart—and used its heart's essence blood to become the Twelve Ancestor Witches. 2 9
The tribe's ancestral land lies beneath Buzhou Mountain, which formed from Pangu's spine. Its central Ancestor Witch Hall is Pangu's Heart itself, granting the tribe an unusually secure foundation. 30 239
Li Hao's emergence creates an exception to the original twelve-member structure. Formed from a wisp of semi-pure, semi-turbid qi concealed within Pangu's Heart, he becomes the Thirteenth Ancestor Witch and is also identified as the Fourth Pure One. 4
Early Growth
The Blood Pool produces powerful Great Witches, including Kuafu and Dayi, during the tribe's early prosperity. Kuafu manifests holding a green snake and a yellow snake, while Dayi appears carrying a crimson divine bow and white arrows. 1
The Ancestor Witches serve as the tribe's stabilizing core. When they enter seclusion, Dijiang's proclamation that they are cultivating in the Ancestor Witch Hall immediately calms a tribe on the verge of disorder; Kuafu and Dayi then guard the hall. 8
Li Hao's Nine Revolutions Mysterious Origin Technique fundamentally changes the tribe's development. Initially rejected because of its awkward movements, it becomes indispensable after its practitioners demonstrate overwhelming gains in combat. 8 14
Development and Expansion
The tribe develops a highly competitive but cohesive cultivation culture. Rank is determined through combat, yet Dijiang considers the resulting rivalry healthy because the Witches remain united rather than turning competition into internal war. 14 16
Li Hao pushes the tribe beyond reliance on brute force. He advocates equipping weaker members, organizing Great Witches into formations, and training lower-ranking members as unit leaders rather than allowing every fighter to charge headlong into enemy treasures. 16 58
Farming becomes another form of physical cultivation. The Ancestor Witches and clan members adopt it after witnessing its strengthening effects, and the ancestral land develops into a prosperous, resource-rich agricultural settlement. 61 252 253
The tribe also begins exploring reproduction independent of the Blood Pool. Dijiang and Xihe's child demonstrates the potential of this change, inheriting both the Witch Tribe's formidable physique and Xihe's complete Primordial Spirit. 84 469
Society and Culture
- Strength-based hierarchy — Combat ability determines standing among the Witches; Great Witches regularly challenge one another to establish rank. 14
- Body-centered ideals — Physical power, robustness, and durability are admired, while the Ancestor Witches traditionally prioritize body cultivation over Primordial Spirit cultivation. 20 61
- Strong internal loyalty — Dijiang consistently places the tribe's survival above reputation, personal comfort, or outside opinion. 244
- Agricultural society — Despite their fearsome reputation, the Heavenly Dao finds the ancestral land peaceful, well supplied, and populated by Witches living contentedly through farming and cultivation. 252 253
- Pragmatic warfare — Under Li Hao's influence, the tribe adopts the principle of winning with physical strength when possible, using Witch Artifacts against magical power, and withdrawing when defeat is unavoidable. 275
Abilities & Skills
Physical Body Cultivation
The Witch Tribe's defining strength is its physical body. The Nine Revolutions Mysterious Origin Technique amplifies their already exceptional bodies and allows them to fight with overwhelming force even without conventional Magic Treasures.
- Greatly enhances strength, speed, reflexes, endurance, and durability. 15
- Allows fighters to withstand weapon strikes without injury and defeat opponents through direct collisions. 15
- Enables same-level Witches to resist attacks from opponents one or two minor realms stronger, provided the gap does not cross a major realm. 267
- Protects the Primordial Spirit as well as the body at advanced levels. 324
- Nearly all members eventually attain the fifth revolution, rendering the Witch-Slaying Sword ineffective against all but a tiny number of the weakest members. 274
Innate Laws and Divine Powers
Ancestor Witches possess powerful law-based divine abilities from birth. Great Witches may possess similar abilities, but theirs are markedly weaker.
- Dijiang wields the Law of Space, including teleportation and spatial concealment. 149 251
- Gong Gong advances by combining malevolent energy with his Law of Water. 258
- Qiang Liang and Xi Zi absorb and manipulate tribulation lightning, later displaying the All Heavens Divine Thunder. 239 210
- Zhu Rong fights using fire-based divine power and his physical body, requiring no Magic Treasure against Laozi and Tongtian. 23
Twelve All Heavens God-Fiend Array
The Twelve Ancestor Witches can jointly form an array that summons Pangu's true form.
- It is described as the tribe's most powerful collective method. 192
- All twelve original Ancestor Witches are required; losing even one renders the array unusable. 192
- Li Hao, despite being the Thirteenth Ancestor Witch, cannot learn the formation. 192
Witchcraft and Witch Artifacts
Xuanming's Witchcraft research gives the tribe a means to store magical power and refine equipment, addressing the limitations faced by ordinary Witches with deficient Primordial Spirits.
- Ordinary clan members originally cannot preserve magical power or wield standard Magic Treasures because they lack complete Primordial Spirits. 116
- Witchcraft lets most members convert and retain a measure of magical power. 275
- Xuanming develops methods for refining Magic Treasures, which the tribe calls Witch Artifacts. 275
- Lower-ranking members are equipped with Innate Gourds and Banana Leaf Fans for ranged attacks or escape. 275
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Ancestor Witch Hall / Pangu's Heart — The tribe's central sacred site and the origin of its Blood Pool; it is also the foundation of the sentient artifact spirit that later emerges within the hall. 290
- Blood Pool — Produces new Witch Tribe members and is regarded as a foundation that cannot be lost. 1 251
- Witch Artifacts — Refined through Witchcraft to allow clan members to answer magical-power users with equipment of their own. 275
- Innate Gourds — Standard armament carried even by low-ranking members in the later era. 275
- Banana Leaf Fans — Used as a fallback tool to blow opponents away and enable retreat. 275
- Nine Heavens Breathing Soil — Protects the ancestral land during heavenly tribulations. 239
Relationships
- Pangu — Progenitor and Father God. The tribe identifies itself as Pangu's continuation and regards his relics as part of its inheritance. 9 149
- Three Pure Ones — Kin formed from Pangu's three streams of pure qi, in contrast to the Witch Tribe's origin from turbid qi. Their relationship is marked by rivalry, disputes over Pangu's legacy, and later contact within the Ancestor Witch Hall. 9 20 306
- Great Witches — The tribe's elite members and frontline defenders, including Kuafu, Dayi, Chiyou, Xing Tian, and Xiangliu. They guard the ancestral land and form the bridge between the Ancestor Witches and ordinary clansmen. 1 8 58
- Human Race — Initially terrified of the tribe, the humans later accept its protection and migrate toward its ancestral land. The Witch Tribe provides security, resources, and discipleship while seeking to avoid conflict with humanity. 277 282 371
- Demon Race — A major rival. Di Jun considers a Witch-Slaying Sword, but Bai Ze warns that attacking the Witch Tribe would risk the Demon Race's extinction. 273 274
- Western Sect — The Westerners publicly treat the tribe as valued friends because of the benefits it brings to the West, while Li Hao covertly exploits their trust and resources. 131 133
- Ox-Head and Horse-Face Tribes — Minor races recruited to capture wandering souls; they consider the Witch Tribe their backing and protection. 216 217
- Heavenly Dao — Initially expects the Witch Tribe to be a violent destabilizing force, but changes its assessment after observing its agricultural, peaceful life and lack of ambition to dominate the Primordial Era. 253 256
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rise beneath Buzhou Mountain
The Witch Tribe emerges after the Dragon-Han Tribulation as a new major power, with the birth of Great Witches signaling its early prosperity. Li Hao's appearance as the Thirteenth Ancestor Witch then supplies the tribe with knowledge and techniques that alter its expected fate. 1 4 8
Conflict over Pangu's Legacy
The tribe clashes with the Three Pure Ones over territory and treasures around Buzhou Mountain. Li Hao argues that the Witch Tribe's relationship to Pangu gives it a legitimate claim to Pangu-related inheritances, while Zhu Rong demonstrates that the tribe can contend directly with the Three Pure Ones. 19 20 23
Militarization and Reputation
Li Hao modernizes the tribe's combat doctrine through weapons, formations, and organized lower-rank protection. Outside challengers repeatedly attack the ancestral land during the Ancestor Witches' absence, only to be defeated by Great Witches or ordinary clansmen and thrown out alive under Li Hao's no-killing rule; this establishes the tribe's feared but unexpectedly restrained reputation. 58 217
Dao Attainment and Demon Deterrence
As multiple Ancestor Witches achieve the Dao, the tribe becomes powerful enough that the Demon Race abandons plans for a Witch-Slaying Sword. The tribe nonetheless prepares for war, spreads Witchcraft, and equips its members for the possibility of conflict with magic-treasure users. 253 267 274 275
Protection of the Human Race
The tribe intervenes against the Desolate and Demon races, unintentionally terrifying the humans it seeks to save. Li Hao later earns the humans' trust, while Chiyou and other Great Witches help maintain their safety. The resulting alliance allows the Human Race to settle near the Witch Tribe and receive its support. 277 278 283
Notable Quotes
“Who else is there?!” — Dijiang, expressing the tribe's confidence in its unmatched position within the Primordial Era. 117
“Our Witch Tribe are the true descendants of Pangu; taking back Father God's belongings is only natural.” — Li Hao, on the tribe's claim to Pangu's inheritances. 79
Trivia
- The tribe is widely rumored to lack Primordial Spirits, but the Ancestor Witches possess relatively complete Primordial Spirits; they simply traditionally focus on physical cultivation. 20
- Outsiders often mistake the tribe's appearance for hostility. Mahasthamaprapta initially assumes the Ancestor Witches are enemies because of their intimidating forms. 131
- The Witch Tribe's own members consider a quick, overwhelming kill gentler than the Human Race's eye-gouging and groin-kicking combat methods. 284
