Background

Chen Li obtained the Gulp Gulp Fruit as a sign-in reward upon arriving in Martial Soul City. The fruit was identified as a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit with no side effects and automatically became his second Martial Soul because he already possessed the Rumble-Rumble Fruit. Its power formed a separate black-hole-like core within him, distinct from his lightning-based first Martial Soul 8.

The fruit gave Chen Li a solution to the Rumble-Rumble Fruit's refusal of ordinary Soul Rings. Failed absorption attempts had been stored in the system space rather than lost, leaving him with large quantities of low-quality rings that the Gulp Gulp Fruit could process into better materials 5 9 11.

Its first successful refinement combined low-quality Ten-year Soul Rings into an Ordinary-quality ring. Chen Li then used the same process to elevate a Thousand-year Soul Ring until it was of sufficient quality for the Rumble-Rumble Fruit to absorb, ending the limitation that had prevented his advancement 12 16 20.

When manifested, the Gulp Gulp Fruit appears as a dark, void-like phantom behind Chen Li.
