Chapter 32: The Violent Heroine
It was only a ten-minute walk from the football field to the small hotel, but Cheng Yun was completely drained. He could barely manage the first half of the walk, and the second half was even difficult.
Undoubtedly, the Old Mage had given him a shortcut to martial arts training, but it was only a shortcut.
They just needed to turn the corner to reach the hotel. Cheng Yun quickly asked the Heroine Yin to let him go, saying, "You don't need to help me with the rest. Heroine, I can walk myself."
"Alright." As soon as the Heroine Yin let go of him, she saw him suddenly lean to one side, almost losing his balance and falling. She couldn't help but reach out and grab him again, muttering, "I told you we should have just carried you back. You're so stubborn."
"I'm not being stubborn," Cheng Yun said weakly.
What would a six-foot man being carried on the shoulder of a five-foot-one girl look like on the street?!
"We're here," the Heroine Yin reminded him, while also consciously pushing open the glass door for him.
Cheng Yan was sitting on the sofa at the front desk. The air conditioning provided a comfortable temperature. She was crossing her legs, head down in silence. A book lay open on her lap, but judging by the mobile phone placed on top of it, her mind was likely not on the book. It was more like a posture of... waiting for a bus at a waiting hall.
When Cheng Yun and the Heroine Yin entered together from the door, she only turned her head to glance at them, her expression calm and indifferent.
"Where did you two go?" she asked.
"You're back?" Cheng Yun managed an ugly smile and plopped down right next to her. He then let out a long sigh, his body going limp on the sofa. "I don't want to cook today. What do you want to eat? Let's order takeout."
"Rather than ordering takeout, I'm more concerned about what you and Sister Yin Dan were doing this afternoon to end up looking like this." Cheng Yan then turned and looked calmly at Cheng Yun, who seemed to have overexerted himself. She placed her hand on the mobile phone, her slender, jade-like index finger tapping the screen of the phone on the book repeatedly. The light tap-tap-tap sound of her fingernail hitting the screen could be heard.
At the same time, she glanced at the Heroine Yin, only to see the Heroine Yin innocently taking a paper cup to the water dispenser to pour herself some water, as if nothing had happened.
Cheng Yan couldn't help but fall silent for a moment, thinking, Could it be that because of the recent hot weather, someone's temper flared up, their lust got the better of them, they saw that Sister Yin Dan had a good figure and was somewhat attractive, and so they took advantage of her not being quite right in the head and had some wicked idea?
Thinking this, she shook her head again—
No, no, no, this guy isn't that kind of person!
Cheng Yun was truly taken aback. He turned to look at Cheng Yan, not reacting for a long time, and asked, "Are you that nosy?"
"Not answering?"
"What else could we have been doing?" Cheng Yun dazedly shook his head, unable to comprehend the thought process of an underage girl. "We just went for a run."
"A run? Which gym?"
"Yida Football Field."
"A sports field?" Cheng Yan suddenly chuckled. "You're telling me that on such a hot day, you went to an outdoor sports field to run? And you took a... delicate girl wearing slippers with you?"
"But that's the truth," Cheng Yun spread his hands helplessly. "I have to be on duty tonight, and I can't wake up in the morning, so I can only go for a run in the afternoon! Besides, Yin Dan dragged me out. Yu Dian knew when we went out, didn't she ask her? Why are you interrogating me when we got back?"
"Sorry, when I asked Yu Dian, she just said you two went out. She didn't say you went for a run."
"Uh..." Cheng Yun immediately looked at Yu Dian behind the counter.
Yu Dian flinched, putting on a guilty expression—she didn't know what Cheng Yun had been doing outside either!
"Why are you asking so many questions?" Cheng Yun continued to look at Cheng Yan. "I'm starving."
"...Forget it, forget it." Cheng Yan immediately turned on her phone screen. "What do you guys want to eat?"
"Braised pork, pork knuckle, twice-cooked pork!"
"Eating something so greasy in the middle of summer." Cheng Yan frowned. She had originally wanted to eat sweet and sour pork ribs.
In the end, she ordered the dishes according to Cheng Yun's wishes, just adding a vegetable. Then she scooped some pickled radishes from a jar, cut a small plate, and sat back on the sofa, asking Cheng Yun, "How far did you run? You're exhausted!"
"Twelve kilometers."
"Twelve kilometers?" Cheng Yan was surprised.
"Yeah."
"When was the last time you ran? And you ran twelve kilometers in one go?" Cheng Yan stared at him blankly. "You're not afraid of lying in bed for a week!"
"I'm perfectly fine," Cheng Yun replied perfunctorily, not wanting to talk.
"If you were fine, would you be tired like a dog?" Cheng Yan frowned. "Even I would feel tired after running twelve kilometers, let alone you."
"How can you say that!" Cheng Yun protested.
"You don't know how to pace yourself. What if you get heatstroke?" Cheng Yan frowned slightly, then continued, "Besides, running for over an hour in this heat, the sun must have scorched your skin."
"I put on sunscreen."
"Sunscreen? You put on sunscreen?" Cheng Yan was stunned. "...Wait, where did you get sunscreen?"
"I bought it."
"When did you buy sunscreen?"
"I bought it for you."
"You bought it for me..." Cheng Yan stopped mid-sentence, then her eyes narrowed. "So you mean you used my sunscreen!? It's very expensive! I only use one bottle all summer!"
"It was bought by me anyway."
"I'll be damned..." Cheng Yan had just uttered two words when she realized something was wrong. She opened her mouth blankly, then quickly changed her tune, "Damn... the sunrise paints the river red, more beautiful than fire!"
Cheng Yun looked at her performance, a little stunned: "Did you just swear?"
"I didn't," Cheng Yan denied calmly. "I'm just reminding you to buy me a new one yourself when you finish it!"
"You swore, didn't you?"
"No, you heard wrong."
"Really?" Cheng Yun looked questioningly at Heroine Yin.
Heroine Yin finished three cups of water in a row, then wiped her mouth with satisfaction and put down the cup. She suddenly met his gaze and was taken aback: "Hey, what are you looking at me for!"
"Huh?" Cheng Yun looked at Yu Dian again.
Little girl Yu Dian lowered her head, as if she knew nothing.
Cheng Yun then looked at Cheng Yan and found that this girl was surprisingly calm. He said earnestly: "Although you are not very mature at your age, precisely because you are not mature, you need to develop good habits in many things, such as this swearing..."
"Hello, delivery," the delivery guy interrupted him, standing at the door. His gaze swept over Yu Dian, Cheng Yan, and Heroine Yin. "Which one of you is Ms. Cheng Yan?"
"I am," Cheng Yan said calmly, standing up.
After replenishing energy through eating and slumping in a chair behind the front desk for so long, Cheng Yun finally recovered. However, the memory of how drained he felt this afternoon still made his heart pound.
As the sky gradually darkened, daylight was once again replaced by neon signs and streetlights.
Little girl Yu Dian had already retreated to her room. She had been here for several days, yet Cheng Yun hadn't seen her go out once. She worked at the front desk and retreated to her room after work. This little girl's social interaction seemed lacking to an almost unimaginable degree. Heroine Yin, with nothing to do, also returned to her room. Cheng Yun put on Titanic for her in the room and told her she could come down to mop the floor when the movie ended.
Only Cheng Yun and Cheng Yan remained at the front desk.
Cheng Yun was still watching a drama, "In the Name of the People," which had been very popular some time ago, with the volume turned down very low.
Cheng Yan sat beside him. She seemed bored, flipping through a book without reading it, and scrolling through Zhihu on her mobile phone—she treated the app entirely as a story collection.
Suddenly, she asked, "What's the deal with that Sister Yin Dan? I don't think she knows you very well, yet you seem to take good care of her."
"Like I said, I knew her when I was a child," Cheng Yun said, pausing and pausing the video. "We weren't that close back then, so you wouldn't know her."
"What's her story?" Cheng Yan asked.
"How should I put it..." Cheng Yun frowned. "She has some mental issues, quite a few."
"Such as?"
"Like delusional disorder, violent tendencies, etc. She always fantasizes about being an ancient martial artist who kills without mercy. So if you hear her say something silly, don't argue with her or try to educate her, just pretend you didn't hear it," Cheng Yun said calmly. "Actually, she was better before. Later, I heard her condition got worse and worse, so her family sent her to a mental hospital. Last year, I don't know why, maybe she got a lot better, she could live outside. The hospital released her."
"But she doesn't remember many things from before, so don't ask her, for fear of triggering bad memories. Also, she just got out of the hospital and is very unfamiliar with the world. I'm currently doing my best to guide and educate her, trying to help her adapt to life outside."
"Is that so?" Cheng Yan frowned. "What about her family? Did they just dump her on you and leave?"
"Her parents are dead."
"Oh, okay." Cheng Yan was stunned for a moment, then asked, "So you took on this responsibility yourself?"
"It's not a big deal," Cheng Yun smiled.
"You really..." Cheng Yan sighed, acting like an adult. "I don't know what to say about you!"
"..." Cheng Yun didn't reply.
Cheng Yan then consciously ended the topic and asked, "Why did you decide to go for a run this afternoon?"
"Because Yin Dan inexplicably insisted on dragging me out for a run. Her mind isn't right, and I couldn't go against her wishes, so I went," Cheng Yun said, then paused. "Besides, why are you so surprised? Didn't you tell me to exercise a few days ago?"
"I told you to..." Cheng Yan fell silent for a moment, then turned her head and retorted, "I said it casually, and you actually took it seriously!"
"Exercising can't hurt!" Cheng Yun spread his hands.
"Whatever you say," Cheng Yan waved her hand. "It's indeed not a bad thing to be healthier."
Cheng Yun felt utterly bewildered.
Around nine o'clock that night, Heroine Yin came downstairs with red eyes. She paused when she saw Cheng Yan but didn't speak, just silently picked up the mop and started cleaning.
"What's wrong?" Cheng Yun noticed something was off and looked at her in confusion.
"Nothing," Heroine Yin's voice and expression were calm, but she rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand, looking wronged.
"Pfft! Did someone bully you, Heroine?" Cheng Yun quickly stood up, looking at her in astonishment. "If you're in a bad mood, just sit for a while. Otherwise, people might think I'm being harsh on my employees!"
"Oh." Heroine Yin obediently put down the mop and sat on the sofa, bowing her head apologetically. "I've caused you trouble."
"No! What's wrong with you?"
"Jack is dead. I didn't expect Jack to die." Heroine Yin tried her best to remain calm, and indeed, she did. "The world is already so treacherous, and Heaven won't even let a pair of lovers go?"
Cheng Yun: "..."
Cheng Yan: "..."
Cheng Yan really couldn't understand. It was one thing for this girl to have delusions, but why did she have violent tendencies?
I heard that we can give rewards now, not sure if it's true (pretending not to care)
