Background
Wu Xie is a young tomb explorer who travels with his companion Lao Yang toward the Qinling Mountains. Though cautious about the mysterious Huang Wei, he chooses to accept Huang Wei’s offer of guidance, reasoning that the unknown cultivator is safer than the armed desperadoes they had been shadowing. 369 370
During the journey, Huang Wei reveals the existence of cultivators and leads Wu Xie and Lao Yang across a collapsed bridge by letting them walk through the air. The experience turns Wu Xie’s initial skepticism into fascination, and he asks to learn cultivation. 371 372
After encountering the illusion-inducing Bronze Branch and receiving repeated warnings about cultivation’s isolation and danger, Wu Xie still chooses the path willingly. His stated motivation is to extend his lifespan and see the wider world. 373
At Jiazi Gully, Huang Wei allows a troop of monkeys to beat Wu Xie and Lao Yang before healing them with Pills for Cultivation. Wu Xie’s body is subsequently remolded, granting him strength sufficient to lift boulders, defeat a giant fish monster with a punch, and crack a stone support pillar. 374 376
Personality
Wu Xie is curious, adventurous, and willing to investigate things others consider dangerous. He is drawn to haunted locations, ancient artifacts, and the possibility that the world is larger than ordinary life suggests. 373 382 383
He is cautious without being timid. Although Huang Wei’s knowledge and strange behavior unsettle him, Wu Xie chooses to travel with him to learn more rather than reject him outright. 370 371
He also shows compassion and a sense of responsibility. He worries about Old Tai’s death, considers helping Master Liang despite Lao Yang’s suspicions, and becomes disturbed when he realizes Lao Yang deliberately lured him into the Qinling expedition. 383 380 385
