Personality

Huang Rong initially presents himself as a practical and fair commander. After Tang Xingcheng assaults Wang Xiaochuan's daughter, he hears Su Tang's account, acknowledges his subordinate's wrongdoing, and prevents the incident from escalating further 59. He is also decisive when investigating Wuyin Village, using his authority to intimidate obstructive villagers and organizing his group to divide their surveillance 60 61.

His concern for justice proves conditional. Once he learns of the Blood Soul Pill, Huang becomes consumed by the possibility of using it to improve his Bone Root and break through his long-standing cultivation bottleneck. Demon Suppression Division Assignment

Huang Rong receives Lu Chuan, Su Tang, and Jiang Hao as reinforcements from the Mountain Splitting Saber Hall. He introduces himself as the commander of a Demon Suppression Division team and leads them to investigate Wang Xiaochuan's suspicious death 56.

After Lu Chuan defeats Tang Xingcheng for assaulting Wang Xiaochuan's daughter, Huang Rong listens to Su Tang's testimony rather than accepting Meng Wei's account. He acknowledges that Tang Xingcheng was at fault and removes him from the scene 59.

Wuyin Village Investigation

Huang Rong leads the group to Wuyin Village to investigate reports of a River Demon devouring a woman. He proposes having Su Tang enter the village alone to gather intelligence while he, Lu Chuan, and Jiang Hao pose as travelers 59.

When the villagers obstruct the investigation, he reveals the Demon Suppression Division's authority and intimidates them into dispersing. Later, he organizes a diversion so Lu Chuan can evade surveillance and meet Su Tang at the River God Temple 60 61.

Pursuit of the Blood Soul Pill

After Lu Chuan and Su Tang uncover the River God's human sacrifices and Blood Soul Pill refinement, Huang Rong fixates on obtaining the pill. Rather than seek reinforcements, he chooses to exploit the Grand Sacrifice to locate the River God's lair for himself 64.

At the sacrifice, he prevents Lu Chuan from interfering with the impending deaths of two children, prioritizing his plan over their lives 65. The Grand Sacrifice is then exposed as a trap, with the River God intending to consume Huang Rong and the other Martial Artists 66.

Death

Huang Rong fights the River God's Puppets and is nearly killed after Village Chief Zhou uses the Soul Capturing Ghost Flute to incapacitate him. Su Tang saves him, allowing him to rejoin the battle 67.

He uses a Thunderclap Bead to gravely wound the River God, then abandons Su Tang, Jiang Hao, and the remaining Division members to pursue the Blood Soul Pill 69. Upon finding that Lu Chuan has consumed it, Huang Rong declares that the villagers' lives do not matter and attacks Lu Chuan to refine the remaining medicinal power from his body 70.

Lu Chuan counters him with the Soul Capturing Ghost Flute, inflicting a soul attack that leaves Huang Rong helpless before killing him 70.
