Thanks to Cyborg's decoding and Shane's earlier, brief research, Shane could now use simplified versions of some functions of the Apokoliptian Mother Box in his hands.
Shazam was flying around the fragment of Oa, which was slightly larger than the moon, inspecting it section by section in hopes of finding traces on their most obvious lead.
Meanwhile, Shane tried to operate the Mother Box, supposedly a cosmic-level divine artifact.
"This thing can record signals and open Boom Tubes anywhere in space. In theory, it should have both positioning and signal-scanning functions."
It had been far too long since Shane had dealt with anything technical, and his attempts to fiddle with the Mother Box were still rather clumsy.
"Let me see... why does activating the positioning function also open the database?"
After some tinkering he only half understood, Shane watched the dizzying streams of data popping up on the Mother Box and decided brute force might work miracles. He slapped its side a few times.
Fortunately, Shazam wasn't nearby and had probably flown to the other side of the fragment of Oa. Otherwise, he would surely have pointed out that Shane's method of repairing the Mother Box looked more like fixing an old television on Earth.
To Shane's surprise, though, his "universal repair method" actually had some effect.
After two faint crackles of electrical sparks, the Mother Box successfully began operating.
"...Select energy signature... Green Lantern. Beginning scan..."
"Then scan already!" After waiting ages without another response from the Mother Box, Shane shook it twice in irritation.
Then he looked up and surveyed his surroundings with a complicated expression.
Seriously? Were he and Shazam really going to have to search several light-years around here with their naked eyes for any possible survivors?
