Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Six Godly Powers 90 An old wizard of the Council of Eternity bestowed the powers that allow Billy to become Shazam. This occurred before the events recalled in the chapter.
Increased strength through special training 162 Grows stronger through Shane's extreme-environment training, which includes instruction in knifehand strikes.
Record magical-lightning output 180 Uses a deceptive opening to unleash a nearly full-power lightning attack. Its output surpasses every previously recorded strike, damages Shane, and carbonizes much of his battle suit, but leaves Shazam almost completely drained.

Background / History

Billy inherited both power and responsibility from an old wizard of the Council of Eternity. By the time Madame Xanadu warns him about Black Adam's resurrection, he is the Council's only remaining wizard; the others are missing or dead. His duties include protecting the Eternal Rock and the Seven Deadly Sins suppressed beneath it 90 93 129.

Before joining the Justice League, Shazam killed Black Adam in his first solo battle, according to Shane's recollection. His first encounter with Superman also involved a fight: Billy later boasts that he punched Superman, while Superman reminds him that he ultimately lost 90 128.

His adult-looking transformation initially conceals his age from most League members. Batman knows his identity and drafts a proposal to remove him after learning that he is a child, but successive crises and personnel shortages delay the discussion. Billy's forced reversion during the battle with Emperor Zhent exposes his identity to Superman and Wonder Woman 126 128.

Appearance

  • Transformed physique: A large, muscular adult figure. When confronting Shane before the interdimensional rescue mission, he is described as a head taller and roughly three times wider 58 59.
  • Costume: Red clothing with a lightning-bolt emblem on the chest, a white cape, and golden battle boots 59 142 180.
  • Magical effects: Lightning crackles around him when agitated; the emblem on his chest can discharge electricity when touched 59 61.
  • Untransformed appearance: A teenage boy whose appearance surprises teammates accustomed to his adult superhero form 126 185.

Personality

Shazam is cheerful, sociable, and eager for recognition. He marvels at the stars outside the Watchtower, dances to music before a dangerous mission, and quickly becomes friendly with new acquaintances. After helping capture Pandora and Doctor Sivana, he exuberantly broadcasts his success and seeks praise from the League 33 58 99 100 108.

His impulsiveness frequently undermines his responsibilities. Batman reports that his carelessness has allowed magical items to go missing, and Shane is exasperated to discover that he has placed a prank-like voicemail on an emergency communicator. He also tries to avoid demanding training, eventually joining Black Adam on a manhunt partly to escape Shane's sessions 15 90 155 162.

Despite these shortcomings, he is kind, protective, and capable of serious resolve. He objects to sending Shane into the Divine Realm alone, insists that losing League membership would not erase his inherited duties, and confronts Ultraman while Superman is incapacitated. His confidence can collapse after frightening encounters, but encouragement and a concrete responsibility can bring him back into action 33 61 129 139 142.

Abilities & Skills

Transformation and the Six Godly Powers

Billy invokes the word “Shazam!” to assume his empowered form. The Council of Eternity's ritual temporarily replaces his ordinary body with a body from the magical dimension rather than permanently altering it 185 235.

  • Zeus's blessing accounts for one-sixth of his power 40.
  • Injuries to Billy's ordinary body return when he changes back; injuries sustained by the Shazam body do not transfer to Billy, except for death 235.
  • Lightning can reverse the transformation. Emperor Zhent exploits this by throwing Shazam into his own summoned thunderclouds 126.
  • Billy can hear Solomon's voice while transformed 227.

Magical Lightning

Shazam summons divine lightning for combat, magical activation, and access to other realms 35 93 132.

  • Offensive power: His lightning is described as capable of piercing mountain ranges during the confrontation with Emperor Zhent 122.
  • Precision: Uses a bolt as thin as a chopstick to break the illusion controlling Superman 132.
  • Magical catalyst: His innate lightning energy completes Madame Xanadu's encrypted transmission spell 93.
  • Spatial access: Combines lightning with Batman's spatial-rift device to open the way into the Divine Realm 35.
  • Stamina limit: After seven unsuccessful attempts to reopen that entrance, he estimates that he can summon only three more bolts—and only because Mount Olympus is close to Zeus 39.
  • High-output cost: His record strike against Shane combines intense heat with electrical paralysis, but consumes nearly all his remaining magic 180.

Solomon's Wisdom and Mental Fortification

Solomon's wisdom supplies knowledge and insight beyond Billy's ordinary understanding. Zeus's power also fortifies his mind, which Billy cites when resisting attempts to persuade him to abandon his responsibilities 34 129.

  • Interprets divinely empowered writing through his own divine power, even without recognizing its script 34.
  • Glimpses enough of Ares's true state to doubt that he could defeat the god inside the Divine Realm 34.
  • Helps him devise a plan to remove Despero from the Council of Eternity without breaking more restraints on the Sins 132.
  • Alerts him to a conflicting memory in which he idolized Cyborg as a football player, despite having no corresponding posters in his room 171.
  • Does not eliminate his inexperience: he must deliberately draw on the wisdom under pressure rather than simply rely on strength 132.

Superhuman Physique and Flight

Shazam possesses enormous strength, durability, and the ability to fly 34 61 142.

  • Matches Shane in a controlled handshake contest; both end it voluntarily while still claiming reserves of strength 34.
  • The contest's combined energy output is reported as 2.4 × 10¹² tons of TNT per second; this is not presented as Shazam's individual maximum 34.
  • Continues advancing through Ultraman's heat vision long enough to strike his jaw 142.
  • Recovers visibly from sword wounds after returning from a hostile temporary timeline 61.
  • His stamina is tied to his magic. Near-total depletion leaves him listless and unable to continue fighting effectively 183.

Magical Portals and Sensitivity

Shazam accesses the Council of Eternity through magical doorways and can detect disturbances affecting the Eternal Rock 131 132.

  • Opens a wooden-door portal for himself, Superman, and Firestorm 131.
  • Physically moves the portal frame to transport Despero out of the Council's cavern 132.
  • Notices when the Eternal Rock is pried open while he is fighting above Fawcett City 132.
  • Serves as the receiver for Constantine's cross-dimensional magical communication, though movement disrupts the signal 215.

One-Time Power Bestowal

Shazam secretly grants Shane permission to transform once by having Shane touch him while he recites an incantation. He offers this assistance out of guilt over withdrawing from the Flashpoint rescue effort 90.

  • Shane retains the blessing as an unused emergency option for a considerable period 90 105.
  • He eventually invokes it during the Gotham zombie crisis and becomes Thunder Zhent, apparently healing his wound and purging the infection 226.
  • Zeus later explains that the ritual temporarily substitutes a magical body; the transformation does not establish permanent healing of the original body 235.
  • Thunder Zhent's later feats belong to Shane's borrowed-power transformation, not to Billy's demonstrated progression 226 228.

Combat Training and Limitations

Shazam initially relies heavily on magical enhancement and hand-to-hand fighting rather than broad spellcraft. Rachel therefore distinguishes him from a traditionally trained magician 89.

  • Trains with Shane and Superman on Europa, then continues training in extreme environments 155 156 162.
  • Learns knifehand strikes from Shane 162.
  • Improves his tactical deception enough to catch Shane with an unexpected lightning attack 180.
  • Remains substantially outmatched by Shane's combat skill during their later spar 180.
  • Without his transformation, Billy loses to Cassandra in two moves during a training exercise 185.

Equipment / Items

  • Justice League communicator — Engraved with his lightning emblem. Its stationary tracking signal and discovery in Kahndaq alert Shane and Cyborg to his disappearance 90.
  • Emergency locator watch — Supplied by Batman for returning from another world. Billy keeps it protected rather than wearing it openly, complicating its use during an ambush 59 61.
  • Headphones — Uses music to lift his spirits before the interdimensional mission 58.
  • Eternal Rock — A magical legacy he is responsible for protecting, with the Seven Deadly Sins suppressed beneath it 93 129.

Relationships

  • Shane — Friend, occasional rival, and later instructor. Shazam initially tries to protect him from the Divine Realm mission, lends him a one-time transformation, and receives encouragement from him during the battle with Monarch. Their friendship also includes punishing training sessions 33 90 139 155 180.
  • Batman — Mission coordinator who trusts Shazam with magical recruitment and rescue assignments. His knowledge of Billy's age becomes a source of conflict within the League 58 90 128.
  • Superman — Teammate and protective senior hero. Superman rescues Billy after his forced reversion, reprimands his recklessness, and later trains alongside him under Shane 126 128 155.
  • Wonder Woman — Teammate who challenges Batman over exposing a child to dangerous missions. Her murderous alternate counterpart badly frightens Shazam during the Flashpoint rescue attempt 61 128.
  • Black Adam — Former nemesis whom Shazam previously killed. After Black Adam's resurrection, Shazam argues against killing him again, cooperates with him against Pandora and Sivana, and later joins him on a manhunt 90 92 99 162.
  • Zatanna — Magical ally who accompanies his attempt to stop Black Adam's resurrection and tries to help him during imprisonment 91 93.
  • Constantine — Frequently troublesome collaborator. Accompanies the Egypt mission, helps capture Pandora and Sivana, and later uses Shazam as a magical communications receiver 93 99 215.
  • Madame Xanadu — Sends the prophecy warning him of Black Adam's resurrection and the threat to the Seven Deadly Sins 93.
  • The old wizard of the Council of Eternity — Bestows Billy's powers and leaves him the legacy he insists on protecting 90 129.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Wonder Woman's Divine Realm Rescue

  • Opposes Batman's decision to send Shane alone, then uses Solomon's wisdom and a strength contest to judge whether Shane can survive the mission 33 34.
  • Travels to Mount Olympus with Shane and Superman and supplies lightning for the entrance-opening operation 35.
  • Repeatedly tries to reopen the sealed entrance while Shane and Diana remain inside 39 40.
  • Enthusiastically supports inviting Shane into the Justice League after the rescue 42.

Flashpoint Rescue Attempt

  • Batman assigns him to accompany Shane and Reverse Flash, partly as a safeguard against Shane's potential actions in the other world 58 59.
  • Lands in a temporary timeline where Wonder Woman and Amazonian warriors attack him. He returns wounded, then heals in the Batcave 61.
  • Later accounts clarify that fear prevents him from entering the Flashpoint World again. He compensates by secretly giving Shane the one-use Shazam transformation 90.

Magical Recruitment and the Eternal Rock Crisis

  • While recruiting Zatanna, receives Madame Xanadu's warning and abandons recruitment to prevent Black Adam's resurrection 93.
  • Doctor Sivana delays the group until Pandora resurrects Black Adam. Shazam, Zatanna, Constantine, and Ray Palmer are subsequently imprisoned in Kahndaq 91 93.
  • Shane and Rachel's intervention frees the captives. Shazam persuades Shane that Black Adam must survive because they still need his help 91 92.
  • Cooperates with Black Adam and Constantine to capture Pandora and Sivana after the two enemies turn on each other 94 99.

Emperor Zhent and the Age Dispute

  • Fights Emperor Zhent alongside Superman and Martian Manhunter, but is overpowered 122 123.
  • During the later five-on-one confrontation, Zhent forces him back into Billy and throws him toward the ground. Superman's rescue creates the opening Zhent needs to escape 126.
  • Defends his right to remain a hero after the League learns his age, arguing that his inherited responsibility exists regardless of membership 128 129.
  • The Council's endangered legacy includes human knowledge, laws, virtues, technology, and art, not merely the imprisoned Sins 129.

Council Invasion and the Crime Syndicate

  • Returns to the Council with Superman and Firestorm after Wrath, Gluttony, and Greed escape into Despero 131.
  • Breaks Superman's illusion and relocates the battle to protect the remaining restraints 132.
  • Falls into despair amid Firestorm's apparent betrayal and the devastation of Fawcett City. Shane urges him to find courage of his own rather than depend entirely on Achilles 138 139.
  • Learns that Firestorm does not remember his actions; Batman identifies evidence of another person's involvement 140.
  • Charges Ultraman to buy time for the weakened Superman to recover 142.

Teen Titans and Continued Training

  • Is designated as a Teen Titans candidate and assigned remedial training after the Crime Syndicate conflict 154 157.
  • Begins training on Europa with Superman, later grows stronger, and eventually joins Black Adam's manhunt to avoid further sessions 155 156 162.
  • At Titans Tower, attempts to arrange a staged loss to help Shane establish authority. Shane instead tests him seriously, recognizes his stronger lightning, and catches him after knocking him unconscious 180.
  • Shane later questions whether the exceptional lightning output reflects training alone or an unexplained power increase; neither possibility is confirmed 183.
  • Reverts to Billy for a less dangerous training pairing, only to be quickly defeated by Cassandra 185.
