"I know you and the Justice League contacted some third-rate magicians to build an Omnidimensional Magic Defense Network, to keep Ares of Olympus from repeatedly coming to Earth to stir up trouble."
Constantine put away the gold coin and held out a hand to Shane.
"The situation is urgent now. I don't expect you to understand just how serious this is, but I still hope you'll cooperate."
Constantine finally stated his purpose.
"I need command of the Omnidimensional Magic Defense Network, its token of authority, and the right to modify it."
Shane froze for a moment. His instinct was to send Constantine to Batman, because Batman had instructed Zatanna and several other magicians recruited into the Justice League to build that magic defense network from scratch.
Besides, Shane had no way of judging whether the consequences of Neron completing the ritual would be worse.
Or whether readily trusting Constantine would turn out even worse.
Batman could see through people. Only he could quickly assess someone's trustworthiness in a crisis.
