History
Konoha Service and the Bathhouse Wager
Jiraiya is one of Hiruzen Sarutobi’s three exceptional disciples, alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. His Mount Myōboku contract makes him an important intermediary with the Summoning Realm. Although considered a possible Fourth Hokage candidate, his unreliable personality and repeated clashes with the Police Department over bathhouse voyeurism undermine his prospects 57 107 119.
When Hiruzen monitors Tamura Hiroshi through his crystal ball, Jiraiya becomes fascinated by its potential for remote peeping. Tsunade promptly punches him into the floor. He nevertheless contributes to the discussion of Tamura’s possible future as the Raikage’s Assistant and later assesses how Minato might defeat the young swordsman 122 123.
Tamura subsequently finds Jiraiya peeking into a women’s bathhouse and proposes a wager: if Tamura can openly look at and touch the bathers without paying, Jiraiya must teach him his hair-controlling ninjutsu. Tamura gains legitimate access by offering scrubbing and massage services, leaving Jiraiya envious; Tsunade’s arrival forces Jiraiya to flee 124.
Defeat by Kumogakure
Hiruzen sends Jiraiya to rendezvous with Minato without explaining the full situation. Instead, Jiraiya encounters Tamura’s group and the Third Raikage. The clash costs him a leg, while Kumogakure kills his three great toad summons. Back in Konoha, Tsunade condemns his decision to confront the enraged Raikage, and Orochimaru performs the replacement-leg surgery 141 142.
Jiraiya later joins a battle tournament with Fukasaku and Shima. Their assisted Sage Mode allows him to challenge Tamura using Sage Art Lava Release and a giant stone frog armed with a stone sword. Tamura traps all three with Nine Adamantine Sealing Chains, sealing their chakra and preventing Reverse Summoning 175 178 179.
The Great Toad Sage intervenes, but Kumogakure severely wounds it. Jiraiya escapes through Reverse Summoning; Fukasaku and Shima are captured and consumed by the Little Ten-Tails. Jiraiya blames himself for the deaths of both the sages and his earlier summons 179 180.
After Kumogakure conquers Mount Myōboku, the Great Toad Sage seeks refuge in Jiraiya. Jiraiya swallows its pearl and requests permission to return to Konoha, prioritizing the Sage’s survival over continuing the confrontation 184.
Bloodline Development and Wartime Loyalties
Orochimaru studies Jiraiya’s transplanted leg and cells, gaining information about bloodline fusion that he later trades to Danzō. Meanwhile, Jiraiya’s continued loyalty to Hiruzen worsens his relationship with Tsunade, who refuses to reconcile with him while their teacher remains at the center of the Senju clan’s grievances 174 226 234.
Jiraiya develops Dust Release but repeatedly struggles against Kumogakure’s speed and defenses. Tamura evades his Sage-enhanced barrier, and Yozuki A pressures him in close combat after he abandons Lava Release. At Rōran, Raijin Black Zetsu’s Kekkei Tōta Magnet Release resists his Dust Release, leaving Jiraiya disappointed with his new specialization 274 275 286.
Following the war, Hiruzen assigns Jiraiya and Minato to sign a peace agreement in the Land of Iron. Jiraiya remains with Konoha through its decline and later clashes repeatedly with Nagato over attempts to seize the Nine-Tails chakra held by Naruto and Sasuke 278 353.
Naruto’s Generation and Growing Doubts
During Kumogakure’s visit for the Chūnin Exams, Jiraiya warns Tamura not to cause trouble. Their hostile banter develops into discussions about the Rinnegan, Konoha’s history, and a future dominated by overwhelmingly powerful individuals. Jiraiya also takes Naruto to Orochimaru to learn Wood Release 329 331 332.
Jiraiya defends Hiruzen’s later reforms and his decision to cultivate Naruto as a possible successor. Nevertheless, Tamura’s criticism of Konoha’s leadership troubles him. He refuses an invitation to join Kumogakure, choosing loyalty to his village and teacher while acknowledging that Naruto and Sasuke need not share Konoha’s fate 353 354.
He eventually begins questioning the Great Toad Sage’s motives and the claim that the God Trees necessarily bring disaster. Later, Tamura explicitly declines to rescue Jiraiya because the Sage’s soul inside him could attract the Sage of Six Paths’ attention 356 365.
Later Chapter Accounts
In later chapters, Jiraiya works alongside Tamura as a Konoha senior rather than solely as an enemy. He assists the effort against Rasa, commands on the Land of Grass frontline, and encourages Tamura’s growth after a successful attack on Iwagakure. When Tamura’s group appears ready to attack an entire enemy army, Jiraiya rushes out to help 397 401 403 406.
His loyalty to Mount Myōboku remains consequential. The Great Toad Sage restrains both him and Minato while an attempt is made to eliminate Tamura. Jiraiya later warns Tsunade and Minato that a trap awaits them inside the Summoning Realm 418 427.
Against Kirigakure, Jiraiya summons three great toads to defend Konoha’s line. Ringo Hyakujin’s team defeats them using Lightning Release and Contract Seals. Unable to abandon his summons, Jiraiya must be controlled by Inoichi Yamanaka and carried away by an Akimichi ninja during the retreat 448.
Final Capture and Death
Seeking Minato’s abducted child, Jiraiya requests the Great Toad Sage’s help and receives assistance from Fukasaku and Shima. He launches a concentrated attack intended to capture the Eight-Tails jinchūriki, but Killer B and Yozuki A kill themselves to prevent capture. Shisui saves Jiraiya with Susanoo, and the Konoha forces retreat 477.
During a later confrontation, Jiraiya suffers a shattered heart and is Reverse Summoned to Mount Myōboku. Tamura tracks him through a Flying Thunder God formula placed on his back, steals the Great Toad Sage’s orb, and teleports away with him. After sealing the summoning connection and removing the healing Sage’s Talisman, Tamura harvests Jiraiya’s soul 480.
Appearance
- White hair — identified both in battlefield accounts and in his description as a middle-aged man 175 397.
- Sage-induced frogification — imperfect Sage Jutsu produces toad-like bodily changes; he later intensifies these changes to increase physical explosiveness 166 477.
- Transplanted leg — receives a Lava Release ninja’s leg after his original is severed 142.
- Temporary flat-top haircut — Tamura shears his hair during a near-decapitation attack 273.
Personality
Jiraiya is theatrical and openly lecherous. He introduces himself with a strange dance and extravagant titles, while defending bathhouse voyeurism as research for his hoped-for literary career. His behavior repeatedly earns Tsunade’s violence, Minato’s embarrassment, and Tamura’s ridicule 122 124 137 286.
His loyalty is both a strength and a source of conflict. He protects his summons, preserves the Great Toad Sage’s soul, and refuses to abandon Konoha or Hiruzen even when confronted with their failings. Orochimaru criticizes him for trying to keep every relationship intact, while Nawaki anticipates that Jiraiya would obstruct revenge against Hiruzen 184 226 288 354.
As a teacher, he is cautious and protective. He advises Minato against prematurely attempting Kekkei Tōta fusion and recommends specialized instruction from Hatake Sakumo. His youthful admiration for wartime heroes also gives way to disillusionment when he experiences the scale and brutality of national warfare 221 259.
