Background / History
Thirty years before the Linshan County events, the Corpse Demon Cult devastated Yunhuang Prefecture. In response, Great Xia deployed a million soldiers, while the Demon Suppression Division and Heaven Monitoring Division jointly purged the affected thirteen prefectures within half a month 13.
The Division maintained an inspection arrangement for Linshan County, where a Yellow-tier Inspector was scheduled to visit twice yearly. After the Inspector departed, demons began to forage; the Qu Mountain Demon King later learned of a message left by the Division and secretly eliminated the personnel connected to it 2 12.
During the Corpse Demon Cult conspiracy in Linshan County, Captain Yan Shan operated undercover as a porter. After Su Ye aided him against Magistrate Chen and the Qin brothers, Yan Shan called for reinforcements and recommended Su Ye for recruitment 28 29.
Commander Qian Chengzhu subsequently arrived to investigate the anomaly tied to the Blood Fiend Sky-Severing Stele fragment. When the artifact could not be found, he sealed Linshan County, assembled its citizens for inspection, and ordered house-to-house searches 29 30.
Organization
Rank Structure
| Position / Group | Known role or limitation |
|---|---|
| Commander | Listed at the top of the Division's stated hierarchy 30 |
| Guardian Envoy | Oversees a province; aristocratic families are forbidden from monopolizing this office 30 31 |
| Prefectural Commander | One of twelve commanders, each responsible for a prefecture in Yunzhou 30 |
| Grand Commander | Senior field rank; Jiang Qingyun holds this rank during the Divine Blade Sect operation 45 |
| Commander | Field-command rank above Captain 23 30 |
| Captain | Command-level operative rank; Su Ye and Yang Tao serve as Captains 31 39 |
| Demon Execution Guard | Entry-level field personnel; Wang Feng, Ma San, and Xue Ping register at this rank 31 |
| Inspectors | Four tiers—Heaven, Earth, Black, and Yellow—who patrol Great Xia's nine prefectures and investigate major demons, sects, and aristocratic families 30 46 |
The Yunzhou Division is commanded by Guardian Jiang, assisted by several Adjudicators and two Deputy Envoys. Its twelve Prefectural Commanders each oversee one Yunzhou prefecture 30.
Aristocratic patronage is a significant internal political factor. Members backed by a noble family bear that family's affiliation; the highest rank generally available through such support is Grand Commander, while exceptional talent may create other paths 31.
Yunzhou Headquarters
The Yunzhou headquarters occupies more than fifty mu and contains a registration hall, assigned residences, training grounds, the Imperial Decree Hall, and a Martial Arts Repository 31 41.
Newly registered members receive rank-appropriate assignments and accommodations. Su Ye, registered as a Captain, receives a private courtyard, a dark iron rank token, two dragon-collared uniforms, and a standard saber 31.
Missions and Merit
“Our Demon Suppression Division has always operated on a ‘work before eating’ principle. Martial arts must be exchanged for merit.” 31
- Members are generally required to complete one to three missions each month; mission difficulty rises with the member's strength 31.
- The Imperial Decree Hall issues missions ranging from Sentience-stage imps to Aperture Opening Realm Demonic Beasts 31.
- Once a mission document is accepted, it cannot be withdrawn 31.
- A newcomer who completes one external mission may select one Yellow Grade martial art for free; further martial arts and cultivation resources require merit 31.
- The Martial Arts Repository's second floor requires official membership and accumulated merit, while its third floor requires special authorization or sufficient merit 41.
- Contribution points can purchase powerful techniques; low-grade Heaven Tier martial arts may cost ten thousand contribution points and require additional conditions 33.
Known Operations
Linshan County Investigation
The Division identified traces of the Corpse Demon Cult's scheme to refine an entire county. Yan Shan reported the discovery through a communication jade talisman, and Qian Chengzhu's force arrived to investigate the suspected artifact site 29 30.
The Division's artifact search was unable to locate the Blood Fiend Sky-Severing Stele fragment, despite sealing Linshan County and searching its population and residences 30.
Yunzhou Anti-Demon Operations
The Division continues to respond to widespread demon activity across Yunzhou. Emergency signals sent through black iron tokens can summon assistance when local reports understate the danger of a demon outbreak, as occurred in Hedong County 37.
Captain Yang Tao describes unchecked demonic activity in border-region Yunzhou as an affront to the Division and urges a joint report to higher authorities after the Hedong incident 40.
Divine Blade Sect Campaign
After evidence emerged that the Divine Blade Sect had colluded with Demonic Beasts, the Division mobilized hundreds of Captains and Commanders, along with more than half of its Demon Execution Guards, from Yunzhou City 45.
The campaign was led by Prefectural Commander Ye Haichuan, with Town Deputy Envoy Xiao Zhenbei directing the march and Jiang Qingyun commanding Su Ye's group 44 45. The force was ambushed when demons emerged from a concealed cave inside the sect, forcing Division personnel into a defensive battle 46.
Jiang Qingyun rallied the trapped members to hold their position, promising doubled contribution points and additional merit rewards. The operation ultimately captured the surrendering Divine Blade Sect members after Su Ye destroyed the attacking demons 46 50.
