Background / History

Big Black originally served as one of only two Commanders beneath the Qu Mountain Demon King, alongside Hu Dang. During the planned slaughter of Kaoshan Town, he commanded a force of Wolf, Bear, Dog, and Pig Demons from a sedan chair. Su Ye severed one of his wings, forcing him to retreat and flee after his subordinates were killed 11.

Su Ye tracked the injured crow into the forest and overwhelmed him in a second fight. To save his life, Big Black disclosed the Demonic Beasts’ cooperation with Magistrate Chen and the Corpse Demon Cult, as well as their harvesting of humans for flesh-and-blood elixirs. He then offered his spiritual imprint and entered a life-and-death contract with Su Ye, who renamed him “Big Black” 12.

After becoming Su Ye’s subordinate, Big Black led him toward Hu Dang, described the Corpse Demon Cult’s history in Yunhuang Prefecture, and crudely reattached his own severed wing through a bone-setting technique he developed himself 13. Following the Qu Mountain Demon King’s death, he extracted the Tiger Demon’s Demon Core and consumed it with Su Ye’s permission, restoring his wing and advancing his cultivation 17.

Big Black subsequently served as Su Ye’s aerial scout and intelligence source. He located a Corpse Demon Cult hideout, reconnoitered caves containing Ironclad Corpses, discovered and helped secure a fragment of the Blood Fiend Sky-Severing Stele, and infiltrated the Qin residence to steal another fragment while overhearing details of Magistrate Chen’s conspiracy 22 23 25 26.

Appearance

Big Black is a large black crow Demonic Beast, previously described as roughly half a person’s height. He has sharp claws, black feathers, and wings suited for rapid flight and aerial surveillance 11 17.

Personality

Big Black is pragmatic and strongly self-preserving. When defeated, he immediately exchanged valuable intelligence and his freedom for survival, volunteering a life-and-death spiritual contract rather than continuing a hopeless fight 12.

He is also flattering, mischievous, and opportunistic. He routinely praises Su Ye, covets valuable Demon Cores, and takes evident satisfaction in stealing the Blood Fiend Sky-Severing Stele fragment from the Qin family 12 17 26. Despite his fearfulness, he remains useful and obedient, repeatedly warning Su Ye of danger while carrying out scouting assignments 16 22 36.

Kaoshan Town Attack

As the Black Commander, Big Black leads Demonic Beasts toward Kaoshan Town and orders them to attack Su Ye together. After losing a wing and seeing the battle turn against his force, he escapes into the forest 11.

Contract with Su Ye

Su Ye catches and subdues Big Black. The crow trades intelligence on Magistrate Chen, the Corpse Demon Cult, Hu Dang, and the Qu Mountain Demon King for his life, then becomes Su Ye’s contracted subordinate 12.

Fall of the Qu Mountain Demon King

Big Black guides Su Ye toward the Tiger Demon and, after the Demon King’s death, extracts its Demon Core. Consuming the core restores Big Black’s wing and raises his cultivation to Sentience Ninth Layer 16 17.

Corpse Demon Cult Investigation

Big Black finds the Corpse Demon Cult’s mountain hideout, scouts the cave containing Ironclad Corpses, and confirms the cult’s activities for Su Ye 22 23.

Blood Fiend Sky-Severing Stele Fragments

Big Black alerts Su Ye when he struggles to suppress a stele fragment at an inn. Later, he infiltrates the Qin residence, kills four Ironclad Corpses, steals another fragment, and reports the blood-sacrifice conspiracy involving Magistrate Chen, the Qin brothers, the Corpse Demon Cult, and great demons 25 26.

Yunzhou and Chaiqiao Town

Big Black continues to guide Su Ye amid Linshan County’s Corpse Demon crisis and during the investigation of the Blood Lotus Cult and Mountain Ghost activity around Chaiqiao Town 27 33 35 36.
