Background / History
The old Daoist was once the most talented of his master's five disciples and the only one formally accepted rather than registered. His aptitude and rapid cultivation created lasting resentment among his fellow disciples, particularly Di Liuxin. 793 891
He rejected his master's path, believing that cultivation paths must be discovered rather than inherited or forcibly created. He instead cultivated Speak the Law, a choice that cost him greatly: he was ostracized from the upper echelons and relegated to a small world after falling into obscurity. 793 863 864
Thousands of years earlier, he spread the Dao in the Central Continent and served as a guardian of the Heaven River. He later held only the nominal position of honorary elder within the Heavenly Dao Sect and lacked access to its highest secrets. 703 879 863
He meets Hanyu after Hanyu disrupts a year of his cultivation by approaching him at a mountain stream. Though initially hostile, the old Daoist becomes entangled in Hanyu's struggle against Yanluo Hall and the fate of the Central Continent. 568 648
Appearance
The old Daoist ordinarily appears as an elderly man. When his strength is restored, he can return to the form of a sharp-featured, youthful Daoist known as Zhū Daoist. 861 915 940
- Usually presents himself as frail or weakened after backlash from his cultivation. 648 651 698
- His aura can become indistinguishable from nothingness when using Speak the Law. 634
- His restored youthful form carries a powerful and intimidating aura. 915 940
Personality
The old Daoist is sharp-tongued, proud, and intensely unwilling to suffer a disadvantage. He openly provokes stronger opponents, mocks rivals, and insists that he “doesn't do losing business.” 591 793 940
Despite his complaints and self-preservation, he repeatedly involves himself in dangerous conflicts against Yanluo Hall. He worries about Hanyu's recklessness, offers strategic warnings, and shares crucial knowledge when the Central Continent needs it. 648 649 652 862
His view of cultivation is deeply individualistic: no master can create another person's Dao path for them. This conviction separates him from Di Liuxin and the other disciples who followed their master's legacy. 793 835 864
Abilities & Skills
Speak the Law
The old Daoist's principal ability is Speak the Law, a misfortune-based rule that makes his spoken declarations take effect within logical limits. 591 940
- Can compel targets to suffer an imposed outcome, such as falling after a set number of steps. 591 649
- Can make himself temporarily unseen: “I won't be visible in ten breaths.” 634
- Can disrupt enemies during combat, causing them to stumble, suffer sudden pain, or lose the ability to continue attacking. 671
- His effects are limited by the precision, difficulty, and logical plausibility of the statement. 577 940
- His speaking speed limits how quickly he can control multiple opponents. 671
Divine Way Realm Cultivation
Though weakened by backlash, the old Daoist remains a Divine Way Realm cultivator with combat experience spanning thousands of years. 633 651
- His aura once showed signs of merging with heaven and earth. 568
- He recognized Li Yingqi's Soul Hall Dharma Idol immediately and forced it to fall with Speak the Law. 591
- He attacked Yanluo Hall's forces from the clouds with a sword technique described as Stars Fall. 664
- He can briefly regain his youthful body and a powerful aura after consuming one of Hanyu's pills. 915 940
- Backlash from prior battles severely reduced his usable strength and left him vulnerable to stronger Divine Way Realm opponents. 651 666 698
Cultivation Insight
The old Daoist possesses unusual knowledge of high-level cultivation, the Heavenly Dao Sect, Yanluo Hall, and the history of the Central Continent. 649 703 862 863

Story Role / Major Arcs
Encounter with Hanyu
The old Daoist first appears while cultivating above a mountain stream. Hanyu's arrival ruins a year of his cultivation, beginning their antagonistic but increasingly cooperative relationship. 568
He accepts Hanyu's Heavenly Luck pill because its effect could help him cultivate difficult Speak the Law conditions without slowly building them through repeated misfortune. 577
Yanluo Hall Conflict
He clashes with Li Yingqi of Yanluo Hall, using Speak the Law to bring down Li Yingqi's Dharma Idol. However, his inability to continue the assault allows Li Yingqi to test him and pursue him. 591
During the investigation of Yanluo Hall's operations, he warns Hanyu against infiltrating the Dao Palaces, then identifies the ten palaces as Yanluo Hall's core military force after Hanyu returns with intelligence. 648 649
He later intervenes against Yanluo Hall's forces, but Meng Yun's Blood Sacrifice to Charm technique inflicts severe damage and worsens his backlash. 664 666
Heavenly Dao Sect Revelations
Di Liuxin captures and suppresses the old Daoist, revealing their shared history and resentment over the old Daoist's exceptional talent. The old Daoist transforms into his youthful form and challenges Di Liuxin to kill him as he once was. 793
Afterward, he explains the origins of the Heavenly Dao Sect and Yanluo Hall to Hanyu and Muzi Li, including how Central Continent cultivators were expelled and exploited by both factions. 862 863
Return of His Strength
Hanyu's pills temporarily restore the old Daoist's youthful form and stabilize his chaotic aura. 915
When his disciples arrive in the Central Continent, he demonstrates the practical danger of his misfortune rule by provoking four sect leaders into being struck by Calamity Lightning. 940
Trivia
