Background / History

The Xiao Family is a Shuzhou military clan with roughly two centuries of heritage. Its generations guarded Great Wei's borders, and its influence extends through military service, civil officials, land, shops, marriage alliances, and longstanding ties with prominent local families. 50 165

Twenty-five years before the story, Marquis Dingyuan's forces spent five years driving back the Southern Barbarians. The victory came at a severe cost: nearly every Shuzhou community suffered losses, and the Xiao Family began a prolonged decline as family members continued to die or be maimed in later border conflicts. 3

By the beginning of the story, Elder Master Xiao Yuan is elderly, injured from years of service, and in failing health; the Old Madam has died; and Xiao Fengchun, several uncles, aunts, and other relatives have fallen or been crippled in war. The main branch is left chiefly with Xiao Jinghong, Xiao Wan'er, Xiao Wuge, Xiao Yuan, and the disabled Xiao Xuanshuo. 2 17

Despite its reduced strength, the family remains one of Shuzhou's most influential houses. Its reputation is sufficient to command deference from most local clans, though its weakness invites pressure from the Jingzhou Liu Family, the Phantom Sound Sect, Bright Moon Tower, hostile officials, and other forces. 61 165 186 341

The family's military legacy leaves it respected but overstretched. With few remaining high-level martial artists besides Xiao Jinghong, the Xiao Family is vulnerable to covert enemies skilled in assassination, poison, and infiltration. 215 259

Second Branch Crisis

Xiao Dongchen exploits the Xiao–Liu conflict and plans to destabilize the family, intending to use chaos and financial pressure to strengthen the Second Branch's claim over the entire clan. 133 194

Xiao Jinghong discovers evidence linking Xiao Dongchen to illicit funds and has him detained. The family reclaims the Disciplinary Hall, removes the Second Branch from Shuzhou, and later learns that Xiao Dongchen has died in custody after leaving a confession. 204 205

Liu Hong and the Shuzhou Crisis

Liu Hong, the Shu Prefecture administrator, colludes with hostile forces including King Landu and the Barbarians while exploiting grain shortages, unrest, and the Xiao Family's weakened position. 304 339

When Liu Hong attempts to further provoke the Xiao Family, Xiao Yuan kills him in Qingjing Residence. The act triggers political turmoil, but also reverses public sentiment: Shuzhou residents credit the Xiao Family with exposing corruption, addressing the plague, and protecting the prefecture from worsening grain prices. 340 344
