Background / History

Liu Lang travelled the jianghu alone under the guidance of his master, Blade Ghost. His years in Mobei tempered his saber path and earned him the title “Mad Saber of Mobei”; he later recalled that his master had told him to measure the world with his own feet and learn from both victory and defeat 151.

Before arriving in Shuzhou, Liu Lang gained a reputation as a fierce young saber wielder. He killed Huang Ziqi, the “Blood Droplet” chief of the Mobei Ma Gang, but his confidence also made him arrogant and reckless 84 151.

In Shuzhou, Liu Lang and a Phantom Sound Sect cultivator robbed the Xiao Family’s medicinal-herb convoy. The escort agency was massacred, though Liu Lang deliberately spared Tianshan Sect disciple Shen Huatang 84 87. He subsequently challenged Xiao Jinghong three times; she broke his saber, severely wounded him, and spared his life. The defeat shattered his belief that he was invincible 115 138 151.

While hiding at Hundred Herbs Hall, Liu Lang encountered Chen Yi. Chen Yi treated his damaged meridians through Qi to Control Needles, and Liu Lang offered his concealed spear and thirty services in payment. From then on, he became Chen Yi’s reliable, if frequently distracting, subordinate 138 177.

Personality

Liu Lang is loud, blunt, and intensely competitive. He treats worthy opponents as opportunities to prove himself, often framing even friendly sparring in life-or-death terms. His eagerness to fight can override his assignments; while tailing Liu Taofang, he abandoned his surveillance after being drawn to Chen Yi’s martial display 202 234 245.

His defeat by Xiao Jinghong tempered some of his earlier arrogance. He became more deliberate and humble afterward, though his pride, sharp tongue, and fascination with powerful martial artists remained intact 151 267.

Despite his rough manner, Liu Lang avoids needless cruelty. He spared Shen Huatang during the herb robbery and disdains people such as Liu Wen who casually take out their anger on weaker victims 87 184. He is deeply loyal to Chen Yi, repeatedly risking himself to fulfill orders or protect Chen Yi’s allies 186 325.

Abilities & Skills

Saber Dao

Liu Lang’s principal martial art is a fierce, swift, and direct saber style. His saber intent emphasizes overwhelming force and sharpness rather than elaborate technique.

  • Reached Great Accomplishment in Saber Dao during his Mobei travels 151.
  • Can project saber intent and saber light over considerable distance; one strike left a ten-foot gash in a stone road 252.
  • Overpowered Ge Muxiao, destroying his axes and severing his arm during their confrontation in Black Fish Alley 251 252.
  • Is capable of sensing the relative cultivation and technical mastery of nearby martial artists 170.
  • Remains vulnerable against opponents whose cultivation greatly exceeds his own, such as Lü Jiunan and Yan Jingchen 252 325.

Ghost Saber

A saber art inherited from Blade Ghost, Liu Lang’s master. It is his strongest known technique and relies on explosive movement, ghostlike afterimages, and total commitment to a decisive strike.

  • Uses the art to pressure Chen Yi into revealing Falling Dragon Spear: Daybreak during their duel 280.
  • Unleashes Ghost Saber: Unity as his final attack against Yan Jingchen 325.
  • Its full-force techniques can strain or injure him when used against far stronger opponents 280 325.

Spear Technique

Liu Lang has also trained in spear techniques and claims his spear skill is no weaker than his saber skill.

  • Carried a custom segmented spear strapped around his forearm; tempered-iron links allowed it to be assembled when needed 138.
  • Offered the spear to Chen Yi as part of his payment for medical treatment 138.

Infiltration and Intelligence Gathering

Liu Lang is experienced in Jianghu operations, disguises, shadowing targets, and gathering information.

  • Infiltrated the Jingzhou Liu Family residence and overheard Liu Zhaoxue’s conspiracy with Yan Fusha 186.
  • Repeatedly eavesdropped on Liu Hong and Liu Taoyao, uncovering their role in the grain-burning plot and their plans involving Barbarian slaves 236 248.
  • Understands Bright Moon Tower’s rules, Black Tooth’s network, and the risks of dealing with Unorthodox Path cultivators 155 166.
  • His curiosity can compromise his focus; he has been reprimanded for abandoning surveillance to pursue sparring opportunities 234 271.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Long saber — Liu Lang’s primary weapon; he later carries a precious saber given by Chen Yi 155 234.
  • Ghost Saber inheritance — martial legacy taught by his master, Blade Ghost 280 325.
  • Segmented forearm spear — a custom linked spear formerly carried beneath his sleeve; surrendered to Chen Yi as payment for treatment 138.
  • Bright Moon Tower identity token — used to establish his credentials when delivering Black Tooth’s message to Liu Wen 179.

Relationships

  • Chen Yi — Employer and “boss.” Chen Yi healed Liu Lang’s severe injuries, accepted thirty services as payment, and later entrusted him with surveillance, infiltration, and combat assignments 138 155 177.
  • Xiao Jinghong — Former opponent and source of Liu Lang’s greatest humiliation. She defeated him with two fingers, broke his saber, and spared his life 115 138.
  • Blade Ghost — Liu Lang’s master and the source of his Ghost Saber inheritance; Blade Ghost encouraged him to travel the world and learn through adversity 151 413.
  • Shui Hetong — Frequent sparring partner. Liu Lang has fought him hundreds of times and studies Shui Hetong’s Fist Dao for insight into his own saber path 397 410.
  • Zhang Dabao — Fellow subordinate of Chen Yi. Liu Lang protected him and ordered him to escape when Yan Jingchen attacked 325.
  • Shen Huatang — Tianshan Sect disciple whom Liu Lang spared during the Xiao Family herb convoy robbery 87.
  • Xue Duanyun, Zhang Sanhu, and Zhang Sihu — Tianshan Sect disciples who assisted Liu Lang in guarding and relocating grain stores 269 271.
