Xiao Jinghong trained in the Martial Dao under the Sword Saint Li Wudang from childhood. After more than ten years away from the Xiao Family, she returned to learn that her parents, Xiao Fengchun and Fu Wanqing, were believed dead in the Barbarian heartland. She subsequently entered the battlefield and became commander of the Dingyuan Army. 307

She joined the army in place of her father at fifteen and had driven the Barbarians into retreat by eighteen. As the second legitimate granddaughter of Marquis Dingyuan Xiao Yuan, she became one of the central pillars supporting the Xiao Family's military position in Shu Prefecture. 1 11

Her marriage to Chen Yi was politically significant: with Xiao Wuge expected to go to Jinling as a hostage, the Xiao Family needed Jinghong to remain in Shu Prefecture. She initially regarded Chen Yi chiefly as a son-in-law who must not bring further embarrassment to the family, accepting his apparent idleness so long as he did not flee again. 11
