Background / History

Itachi was an exceptionally gifted Uchiha from childhood. At roughly three years old, he trained with real shuriken rather than toys; when Tōka encountered him, Itachi addressed him formally and accepted him as a senior. Tōka taught him the basic principles of genjutsu and the Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique, directing him toward the visual genjutsu for which the Sharingan is suited. 68

By age nine, Itachi had defeated the Uchiha guards assigned to protect him. Despite his isolated position and serious demeanor, he told Tōka that he wished they could meet again. 69 He later outwitted Tōka into teaching him the Fox Heart Technique, then used it to incapacitate two Konoha gate guards. 102

At age ten, Konoha held a Chunin promotion examination solely for Itachi. He attacked chief examiner Tōka with the Great Fireball Technique, Phoenix Sage Fire Technique, and a kunai charge, but Tōka dispersed his ninjutsu and defeated him with a single kick. Tōka then addressed Itachi's search for life's meaning, telling him that meaning lies in experiencing life rather than birth or death. 136

As the conflict between Konoha and the Uchiha intensified, Danzō persuaded Itachi that the clan's ambitions would lead to war. Root isolated the Uchiha compound with a barrier and attacked the Military Police Force while Itachi entered the compound under orders to kill those inside. 160 161 Afterward, Itachi left the Land of Fire with Izumi, having hidden Shisui's remaining Mangekyo Sharingan after Danzō took the other eye. 163

Personality

Itachi's confidence stems from his talent, intellect, composure, and pride as an Uchiha. Even as a child, he spoke respectfully without being submissive, carrying himself like a much older person. 68

His outward calm conceals sustained internal conflict. He remains composed while confronting Danzō and carrying out the clan's destruction, but his trembling voice and silence reveal that he is never truly prepared for the burden placed on him. 160 161

He is highly protective of the people he values. His concern for Sasuke draws him repeatedly back toward Konoha, while his desire to protect Izumi leaves him vulnerable to Tōka's manipulation. 178 228 282 He is also pragmatic and cautious: he employs shadow clones for reconnaissance, evaluates his opponents' abilities, and defects when his alliance with Akatsuki no longer serves his priorities. 250 286 287

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyo Sharingan

Itachi's Sharingan is the foundation of his combat style, allowing him to apply genjutsu with exceptional speed and subtlety. His Mangekyo Sharingan elevates this ability beyond conventional visual illusions. 179 280

  • Casts genjutsu quickly enough to trap opponents before they recognize the trigger. 179
  • Can use auditory genjutsu; avoiding eye contact does not prevent targets from being caught. 280
  • Maintains an illusion through continued Chakra output, turning its disruption into a Chakra contest against another dōjutsu user. 280
  • Briefly traps Nagato and Konan despite the Rinnegan's resistance to visual genjutsu. 286
  • Uses the Sharingan to locate dispersed Chakra during reconnaissance. 250

Tsukuyomi

Tsukuyomi is Itachi's Mangekyo genjutsu, invoked through his left eye. It controls time and space within its illusion and overwhelms targets mentally. 179

  • Incapacitates Kakashi and Ibiki after their attempts to resist fail. 179
  • Overpowers Kakashi's ordinary three-tomoe Sharingan. 179
  • Leaves victims with severe mental damage even when they lack obvious external injuries. 179

Fire Release and Shuriken Technique

Itachi combines Uchiha Fire Release with precise shuriken trajectories, turning apparently ordinary projectile attacks into multi-angle assaults. 136 286

  • Fire Style: Great Fireball Technique — a signature Uchiha technique used during his Chunin examination. 136
  • Fire Style: Phoenix Sage Fire Technique — scatters Chakra-controlled fireballs across multiple paths. 136
  • Ignites thrown shuriken with Phoenix Sage Fire, creating flaming projectiles that strike from irregular angles. 245 286
  • Uses fast hand seals to transition from shuriken throws directly into ninjutsu. 136 288

Tactical Combat

Though genjutsu is his defining specialty, Itachi is adaptable in direct combat and team operations.

  • Uses shadow clones to extend his reconnaissance range while retaining Sharingan support for his partner. 250
  • Cooperates efficiently with Kisame, dividing battlefield roles between genjutsu, Fire Release, Water Release, and close combat. 175 245
  • Can evade Samehada at close range and immediately counter with Fire Release. 288

Nine-Tails Sealing

The Nine-Tails is sealed within Itachi by Akatsuki. The available account does not show him drawing upon or transforming with its Chakra. 223

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — drawn for his confrontation with Sasuke. 311
  • Shuriken and kunai — used in combination with Fire Release and precision throwing techniques. 136 286
  • Akatsuki cloak and straw hat — worn while operating as an Akatsuki rogue ninja. 178 280

Relationships

  • Ōtsutsuki Tōka — Early genjutsu instructor and senior figure; later manipulates Itachi through Izumi, but ultimately restores him with Yang Release Chakra before his battle with Sasuke. 68 282 311
  • Uchiha Sasuke — Younger brother and central personal concern. Sasuke seeks power to kill Itachi, while Itachi continues to monitor and protect him from a distance. 177 228 282
  • Uchiha Izumi — Devoted companion whom Itachi tries to protect after the clan's destruction; Tōka later uses her safety as leverage against him. 163 282
  • Uchiha Shisui — Fellow Uchiha whose remaining Mangekyo Sharingan is entrusted to Itachi after Danzō takes Shisui's other eye. 163
  • Hoshigaki Kisame — Akatsuki partner. They work effectively together on missions, but their alliance collapses when Itachi sides with Nagato and Konan. 175 245 286
  • Shimura Danzō — Exploits Itachi's loyalty to Konoha and orders him into the Uchiha massacre while pursuing the clan's Sharingan for himself. 160 161
  • Uzumaki Nagato and Konan — Originally targets them on Tōka's orders, then turns against Kisame and allies with them instead. 282 286
  • Third Hokage — Holds knowledge of Itachi's circumstances and receives Itachi's request to keep Tōka away from Sasuke's jōnin-instructor position. 228 280

Story Role / Major Arcs

Uchiha Prodigy

Itachi develops as a child prodigy under the attention of the Uchiha Clan and Tōka. His early training in shuriken and genjutsu establishes the skills later associated with his Sharingan. 68 102 His special Chunin examination against Tōka exposes the vast gap between his own ability and the power of an elite opponent. 136

Uchiha Clan Destruction

Danzō uses Itachi's devotion to Konoha to direct him against the Uchiha Clan. Root attacks the clan's forces while Itachi acts within the sealed compound; afterward, he escapes with Izumi and enters Akatsuki's sphere through Black Zetsu. 161 163

Akatsuki Operations

Itachi's first Akatsuki assignment sends him and Kisame after Orochimaru's ring. He catches Orochimaru in Sharingan genjutsu while Kisame handles the surrounding Otogakure shinobi. 175 He later confronts Kakashi's squad, breaks Tōka's existing illusion with his own genjutsu, and incapacitates Kakashi and Ibiki with Tsukuyomi. 179

During the tailed-beast campaign, Akatsuki seals the Nine-Tails within Itachi. He and Kisame subsequently pursue the Four-Tails, using a shadow clone to broaden their search. 223 250

Warning Konoha and Defection

Itachi returns to the Land of Fire to warn Konoha about Tōka's plan to collect Tailed Beast Chakra for the Ten-Tails. He traps Tsunade's group in an auditory Mangekyo illusion long enough to reveal the intelligence. 280

Tōka then forces Itachi into a mission against Nagato by withholding Izumi. Although sent alongside Kisame to assassinate Nagato and Konan, Itachi ultimately turns on Kisame and defects from Akatsuki. 282 286

Alliance Against Infinite Tsukuyomi

Itachi confirms to Orochimaru that Tōka intends to use the Tailed Beasts and Infinite Tsukuyomi in pursuit of Kaguya. Orochimaru proposes cooperation to find a method of breaking the Infinite Tsukuyomi rather than stopping its activation outright. 295

Rebirth and Duel with Sasuke

Weakened at Naka Shrine, Itachi receives Yang Release Chakra from Tōka after Sasuke awakens the Mangekyo Sharingan. Reconsidering his prior willingness to die, he chooses to fight in order to protect what matters to him and begins his long-awaited duel with Sasuke. 311
