After gathering the survivors and retreating into the "forest," Azrael turned to look at his fellow Chapter Brothers—the Dark Angels who had fought beside him—and felt a wave of bitterness well up inside him, crashing like a storm-tossed sea.
After days of bloody battles and a forced march of hundreds of kilometers, they had crossed nearly half the continent to reinforce the Sons of the Forest. Even the elite Dark Angels had suffered grievous losses.
The Ravenwing had fared badly enough: aside from Grand Master Samuel, who had been gravely wounded and lost an arm, its ranks had been all but shattered. The Deathwing had it worse. Fewer than one in ten of its Terminator Squad remained, and even the Chapter's ancient relic—a Dreadnought from the Great Crusade who had once followed the Lion King—had been forced to self-destruct to hold back Khorne's Daemon Prince and cover their retreat.
The Dark Angels had been dealt a crippling blow in this battle. But what troubled them even more was that, with the communications array crippled by Chaos Scrapcode, they still had no idea what had happened to the Stone Fortress.
And all of it stemmed from his own faulty command.
If he hadn't been so arrogant, if the sight of Dragon Forest Star—so much like "Caliban"—hadn't clouded his judgment, if anger hadn't overcome reason, then he wouldn't have ordered the main force to land without first investigating Chaos's ambush. How had things come to this?
If only he'd stayed calm.
Things wouldn't have turned out this way. The Dark Angels wouldn't have suffered such terrible losses, the Stone Fortress wouldn't have fallen into a trap, and the "Fallen Angels" wouldn't have needed to rescue them!
One incompetent general could doom an entire army.
