Background / History
During the Great Crusade, the Emperor personally granted the Valshius Merchant Dynasty its trade charter. The charter remained marked by a drop of his blood and established a hereditary authority that could not be revoked 160 457.
Machine-spirit memories from the Sword of Redemption depict the first Valshius and three unidentified companions kneeling before the Emperor on the Golden Throne. They swore to uphold an unrecorded Ancient Covenant “generation after generation, until death”; Constantin Valdor witnessed the event, but later records preserved neither the Covenant’s contents nor the other participants’ identities 201.
The Emperor relied on the Thunder Warriors to unify Terra, but their unstable creation process left them genetically defective. After they outlived their usefulness, he ordered the Adeptus Custodes to eliminate them, an act that remains a defining grievance for survivors such as Maximus 826 828.
After suffering grave wounds, the Emperor took the Golden Throne. For ten thousand years, he has endured its agony to suppress the Warp Rift beneath Terra and maintain the Star Beacon that guides Imperial travel through the Warp 201 587 690.
Appearance
The Emperor has no single fixed appearance: observers perceive him according to their own conception of him, producing “ten thousand images” among ten thousand people 689.
- Golden Throne form — a withered skeleton bound by innumerable neural connectors to an adamantium mechanical shrine; his cracked gold armor bears old sword and Bolter wounds 587.
- Living dream-form — a handsome, resolute middle-aged man with long black hair and golden eyes, standing on a snowy peak 689.
- Manifested presence — a magnificent golden silhouette associated with warmth, authority, and Humanity’s collective hope 687.
- Dark aspect — during Alvin’s vision, his eyes carried an alien, cold will that made him appear more divine and threatening than human 690.
Personality
The Emperor’s presence is portrayed as contradictory. In his lucid conversation with Alvin, he speaks gently, directly, and with unmistakable authority, showing urgency over the Star Beacon and the Old Ones’ artifact sealed in the Black Zone 689.
His history also inspires fear and resentment. The Thunder Warriors remember him as a cold pragmatist who discarded unstable soldiers once their role in Terra’s unification was complete 828. Alvin likewise concludes that the Emperor now exists somewhere between human and god, and that further deification could endanger the galaxy 798 802.
Abilities & Authority
Golden Throne and Star Beacon
The Emperor sustains the Imperium’s Warp navigation and prevents catastrophe beneath Terra through the Golden Throne.
- Continuously burns psychic energy to keep the Star Beacon lit 690.
- Suppresses the Warp Rift beneath the Golden Throne; without this restraint, the Imperium would not have survived 690.
- His absence or disruption causes the Star Beacon to go dark, imperiling Imperial travel and cohesion 689 702.
Psychic Manifestation
The Emperor can reach individuals through visions, dreams, and manifestations of his will.
- Appears to Alvin in dreams despite being physically bound to the Golden Throne 587 689.
- Speaks with a voice described as billions of lives speaking together while remaining perfectly intelligible 689.
- Can project a golden manifestation through Alvin during battle, halting a strike against Angron before the projection dissipates 690.
- His psychic presence is overwhelming: Alvin’s attempt to sense the accumulated suffering, prayers, and emotions surrounding him nearly tears his consciousness apart 197.
Imperial Will and Sanctification
The Emperor’s will is treated as a force fundamentally hostile to Chaos.
- His blessed sword burns with pure golden flame and suppresses the Warp power of Abaddon’s Daemon Sword 768 769.
- His manifested authority is recognized as the basis for a Living Saint’s judgment in the mortal realm 695.
- His name, symbols, blessings, and sacred sites are used by Imperial institutions to resist Chaos influence 105 118.
Deification and Faith
Human worship has transformed the Emperor beyond his original identity.
- The faith of billions, amplified across multiple worlds, has caused him to increasingly identify as a god rather than a human 891.
- Alvin considers this deification dangerous, believing the Emperor has become no less concerning than the Four Gods of Chaos 798 891.
- Maximus insists that the Emperor must be remembered as human rather than divine 882.
Equipment / Relics
- Golden Throne — a vast mechanical shrine of gears, cables, unknown technology, neural connectors, holy oil, and ancient bloodstains; it functions as both a throne and an instrument of perpetual torment 587.
- Gold Armor — damaged armor bearing scars from the Emperor’s battle against Horus 587.
- Emperor’s Sword — a holy blade imbued with his will, capable of purifying Chaos-tainted power 768 769.
- Valshius Trade Charter — a Great Crusade-era charter personally issued by the Emperor and preserved by the Valshius Dynasty 160.
Relationships
- Alvin Valshius — communicates with Alvin through dreams, entrusts him with recovering an Old Ones creation tied to the Ancient Covenant, and charges him with becoming Humanity’s “second torch” while the Star Beacon is extinguished 689 690.
- First Valshius — received an Imperial trade charter and swore the secret Ancient Covenant before the Golden Throne 160 201.
- Adeptus Custodes — his direct subordinates and protectors; the Sentinel Guard specifically guard the Golden Throne and his person 796 799.
- Thunder Warriors — used to unify Terra, then purged by the Custodes on the Emperor’s orders after their genetic instability made them obsolete 826 828.
- Roboute Guilliman — his son and Primarch; after privately meeting the Emperor, Guilliman concluded that he was no longer fully human or truly a father 587.
- Lion El’Jonson — another Primarch who recognizes the devastation caused by the Emperor’s transformation into a god-like figure in Imperial belief 595.
Story Role / Major Arcs
The Ancient Covenant
The Emperor’s secret agreement with the Valshius line becomes central to Alvin’s inheritance. Its purpose is eventually revealed: retrieve a sealed Old Ones creation from the Black Zone, an artifact important enough for the Emperor to personally demand its recovery 201 689.
The Emperor’s Dreams
After falling into the Shadow, Alvin dreams of the Emperor’s skeletal form on the Golden Throne. The Emperor gives no answer to Alvin’s questions, but Alvin witnesses a separate vision in which a living Emperor hands a sword to an unknown individual while Primarchs urge that person to act 587.
Star Beacon Crisis
When the Star Beacon is extinguished, the Emperor contacts Alvin in a lucid dream. He orders Alvin to recover the Black Zone artifact and become a temporary “second torch” for Humanity until the beacon can be restored 689 690.
Apotheosis Threat
The Emperor’s growing divinity becomes an escalating concern. Alvin discovers that faith systems spread across worlds have reinforced the Emperor’s godhood, potentially undermining his human identity and making him another destabilizing force alongside the Warp’s Four Gods 798 802 891.
