Background / History
Lion El'Jonson was the master of the First Legion and gene-father of the Dark Angels. After disappearing near the end of the Great Betrayal, he remained asleep for ten thousand years while the Imperium changed around him. His return leaves him physically aged, but still overwhelmingly formidable. 590 591 631
He awakens in a forest and encounters Zabriel, one of the Fallen Angels. Their reunion immediately turns violent when Zabriel fires on him; the Lion King defeats both Zabriel and Alvin before Alvin produces Guilliman's decree and other medals as proof of his mission. The pleas of the civilians Zabriel had protected ultimately persuade the Lion King to hear his son’s account of Caliban rather than execute him. 590 591 592
After learning the Fallen Angels’ perspective, he begins correcting the old division. He pardons Zabriel, establishes the independent Sons of the Forest, and orders Alvin to gather the scattered Fallen Angels in his name. 593 594
Alvin later explains the Imperium’s fate, including the Horus Heresy, Guilliman’s reforms, the Great Rift, and the current war against Chaos. Though exhausted by the scale of the Imperium’s decline, the Lion King resolves to return to Terra, find his father and brothers, and resume his duty. 595
Appearance
The Lion King is a towering, mountain-like Primarch whose aged face retains the majesty and dominance of his youth. His pale hair is touched with gold, and his stern features are marked by time rather than diminished by it. 590
- Extremely large even beside Space Marines; described as roughly four metres tall. 596
- Wears ancient dark-green Power Armor decorated with dark-gold patterns resembling a star map. 590
- His chest plate bears a double-headed eagle: one beak grips a sword and the other a flower. 590
- One pauldron bears the Key of Absolution; the other bears the Lost Book. 590
- His armor is weathered by age but retains its former glory and sacred markings. 590
Personality
The Lion King is stern, proud, intimidating, and deeply suspicious of perceived betrayal. His first instinct on meeting Zabriel is to treat him as a traitor, and he initially prioritizes eliminating Alvin because he identifies him as a psyker and therefore a potential threat. 591 592
Ten thousand years of slumber have made him more composed and empathetic than he was in the past. Rather than immediately purging Zabriel and the civilians defending him, he listens to their explanation and grants Zabriel a path to redemption. 592 593
He dislikes political administration but is fully capable of it, using his intelligence and charisma to secure command of Imperial Navy and Astra Militarum forces on Avalon. He balances this strategic ability with a tendency to dismiss conventional planning when he believes the enemy is too weak to warrant it. 596 640
The Lion King is harsh as a teacher, believing that mercy in training can cause death in war. Nevertheless, he shows protective concern for Alvin, entrusting him with command, personally training him, and repeatedly giving him chances to explain himself when others accuse him of betrayal. 600 612 640 747
Abilities & Skills
Primarch Physiology
Even in his aged and recently awakened state, the Lion King possesses immense strength, speed, endurance, perception, and combat instincts.
- Deflects Zabriel’s bolter round and launches Zabriel through multiple trees with a punch. 590
- Shatters Alvin’s psychic barriers and sends him flying more than ten metres with a single blow. 590
- Defeats Alvin and Zabriel in only a few seconds, using melee strikes and the bolter built into his Power Fist. 591
- Can track opponents’ muscle movements and anticipate bullet trajectories before a trigger is pulled. 599
- Single-handedly kills Chaos Space Marines, a Chaos Lord, and a Psychic Librarian using physical force. 599
Master Swordsman
His Caliban swordsmanship combines the traditions of Caliban’s knights with his own brutally practical philosophy.
- Focuses on precision, economy of motion, speed, footwork, and delivering a decisive lethal strike. 600
- Personally trains Alvin through repeated live-blade sparring, deliberately punishing flaws in his defense, stance, and weapon control. 600
- Cuts down attacking Chaos Space Marines so quickly that their enhanced reflexes cannot follow his movements. 607
- Uses the Sword in the Lake to manifest overwhelming Warp pressure and prove his identity before the Ecclesiarchy. 631
Warp Resistance
The Lion King displays exceptional resistance to Warp sorcery and Chaos influence.
- Ignores Sarax’s blasphemous curse before killing the Chaos psyker. 596
- Is identified as one of the Primarchs notably resistant to the Warp. 596
- Confronts daemonic forces and Chaos champions without abandoning his loyalty to the Imperium’s original purpose. 666 729
Warp Domain
His awakened Warp essence manifests as a mysterious forest resembling ancient Caliban.
- The domain contains creatures believed extinct on Caliban, including Behemoths. 600 605
- The Emperor appears to have guided him to use the forest for Alvin’s trial. 604
- The Lion King initially lacks control over the domain and becomes lost within it for three days. 606
- His domain manifests against Daemon Prince Belak when Alvin becomes a target. 666
